Start by typing your question in ordinary language. If the results are too broad, add the subject, location, date, or likely technical term that distinguishes what you need. Use quotation marks for an exact phrase, site: to focus on a domain, a minus sign to exclude a term or site, or Google’s Advanced Search when you need several filters.
Start with the question you need answered
Google Search accepts everyday questions. For example, Google suggests asking where’s the closest airport?. Add a place if the answer depends on your location, or include other context that narrows what you mean. A question is a useful starting point; you do not need to convert it into a special search command.

Make the wording more specific
Think about the words a useful page is likely to use. Google’s example contrasts the colloquial phrase my head hurts with the more common page term headache. Trying the more specific term may help surface relevant pages, but no wording guarantees a particular result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Add the subject or place when several meanings are possible.
- Add a date or other distinguishing detail when it matters to the answer.
- Try a likely technical or formal term if an everyday phrase is not finding useful pages.
Use a search operator for a specific constraint
Operators can refine a query when you know what wording, domain, or content you want to include or leave out. Keep the operator next to its term; do not put a space after it.
| Goal | Example query | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Find an exact expression | "climate report" |
Searches for the quoted phrase. |
| Focus on one domain | site:who.int climate report |
Limits the search to pages on that domain. |
| Exclude a word | jaguar speed -car |
Excludes results associated with the term “car.” |
| Exclude a site | airport parking -site:youtube.com |
Excludes results from the specified site. |
These operators narrow a search; they do not guarantee an exhaustive set of pages. An exclusion can also remove something useful, so remove the minus term if results become too limited. Google documents these examples in its search tips. Exact-phrase behavior may also change as search systems evolve.
Use Advanced Search for several filters
When you need multiple constraints, open Google Advanced Search. Depending on the search, its controls can let you include or exclude words and filter by language, region, last update, site or domain, terms appearing in particular parts of a page, file type, or usage rights. The available fields vary by search type, so a filter may not appear for every query.
Check why a result matches
Google describes Search as checking query words and sometimes related terms, as well as links and link text between web content. On some results, the “Your search & this result” panel explains connections between the query, settings, and that result. Use that explanation to understand why a page appeared; a result’s position or match explanation is not proof that its information is accurate. Google’s overview is in Learn search tips & how results relate to your search on Google.
