For a different sound in one app or one Samsung Messages conversation, change that app category or conversation instead. Notification sounds are separate from call ringtones.
Choose which alerts you want to change
The S22 offers different levels of control: a general notification sound, a sound for an app notification category, or—when using Samsung Messages—a sound for an individual conversation. Pick the narrowest level that matches what you want to hear.

Change the general notification sound
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds and vibration.
- Tap Notification sound.
- Preview the available tones, select one, then go back to apply it.
This changes the general notification alert, not necessarily the ringtone for incoming calls. Samsung explains that message alerts and regular ringtones are set separately. Samsung’s notification-sound guide and ringtone guidance describe these controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet a sound for one app or notification category
Use this when you want, for example, one app’s message alerts to sound different from other notifications. The available categories depend on the app and phone software.
#1 Best Overall
- The S22 uses a flat (non‑curved) 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 120 Hz refresh that dynamically adjusts between 48 – 120 Hz depending on content — which means smoother scrolling and better battery efficiency when high refresh isn’t needed.
- Its main rear camera features a 50 MP sensor with what Samsung calls “Tetra‑binning,” delivering stronger detail in bright light and surprisingly good low‑light photos compared to many older flagships.
- The build quality is designed to feel premium and durable: it uses an Armor Aluminum frame combined with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on front and back, which gives better scratch and drop resistance — nice if you want a relatively compact but rugged flagship.
- For video content and editing, the S22 supports 8K recording — rare for a “smaller” flagship. That means you can shoot very high-resolution video, useful if you care about future‑proofing footage or cropping/editing later.
- The phone strikes a balance of compactness and performance — in a world of increasingly large phones, the S22 remains fairly pocket‑friendly while still packing the 4 nm flagship‑class chipset (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 depending on region) for smooth daily performance.
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Select the app.
- Tap Notification categories, then choose the category you want to adjust.
- Make sure Allow notifications is enabled and the notification type is set to Alert, rather than silent.
- Choose the sound option and select a tone.
Samsung documents this route in its One UI 7 notification guide. Menu labels and available controls can vary with the S22’s software build, carrier, and network.
Give one Samsung Messages conversation its own sound
- Open Messages and open the conversation.
- Tap More options (the three dots).
- Tap Notification sound and choose a tone.
This changes the alert for that conversation rather than the general notification sound. Samsung notes that notification settings may vary by carrier and whether service is active. Samsung’s Messages and ringtone guidance describes this conversation-level control.

Use a personal audio file
Samsung’s regional guidance describes placing an audio file in the phone’s internal Notifications folder, then selecting it from the relevant app notification category. A typical route is to use My Files to copy the file into internal storage’s Notifications folder, then return to the category’s sound picker. Exact picker labels and steps may differ on an S22 depending on its software version.
Samsung’s UK audio-file guidance lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC for phone sound files and says M4A files need conversion. That page addresses ringtones, so these format notes do not guarantee identical support in every notification picker. It also says streaming-service tracks cannot be selected as ringtone files; a streamed track is not the same as a locally stored audio file.

If the sound does not play
- The app or category is missing: Check the app’s notification settings. Samsung warns that available options can vary by device, carrier, and network.
- The category is silent: Return to that category and confirm notifications are allowed and the type is set to Alert.
- The alert is enabled but inaudible: Check whether the phone is in Sound, Vibrate, or Mute mode, and raise the notification volume under Settings > Sounds and vibration. Samsung lists notification volume separately from other sound controls.
- Only one chat should sound different: If it is a Samsung Messages conversation, use that conversation’s own Notification sound setting instead of changing the general alert.
Samsung’s sound and vibration guide covers sound modes and notification volume.
