Better AI questions can move beyond “fix this” to ask for an approach, a reusable system, or a challenge to your own assumptions. Developer Dexterlung describes that shift after reviewing 1,427 of their prompts, but presents it as a personal retrospective—not a proven model of AI skill or a guarantee that more abstract prompts produce better answers.
What changes as your questions become more abstract?
In an article attributed to DEV Community and displayed as published on August 22, 2026, developer Dexterlung describes four kinds of requests they noticed in their own AI conversation history. The levels differ in what the user already knows, how broadly the problem is framed, and who supplies the method.

| Level | What you know | Who supplies the method? | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Direct execution | The desired result is clear. | You define the task; AI helps carry it out. | “That checkout button does nothing. No console error either. Help me find the cause.” |
| 2. Find an approach | The outcome matters, but the route is uncertain. | AI proposes a way forward, with room for alternatives. | Describe the outcome you need and ask for a plan, options, or trade-offs. |
| 3. Design a system | You recognize a recurring class of problem. | AI helps devise a repeatable process or mechanism. | Ask how to prevent this kind of issue from returning, rather than solving only today’s instance. |
| 4. Challenge your thinking | You want to examine your own interpretation or direction. | AI is asked to question your framing and surface assumptions. | “Please recalibrate me.” |
This is a way to reflect on the scope of a request, not a ranking of prompts. A specific instruction is often the right choice when you know what needs doing. A broader question is useful when it matches the problem you actually have.

Start with the decision you need to make
First identify whether you know the answer you want, the direction you want to take, or only the problem you are facing. If the result is known, ask for help with that task. If the outcome is known but the method is not, ask AI to suggest an approach and explain alternatives. That gives the model room to contribute without leaving the goal undefined.

Widen the scope only when the problem calls for it
If you have handled the same kind of issue repeatedly, ask whether a process, rule, or other repeatable mechanism could prevent the class of problem. This changes the request from “solve this occurrence” to “help me avoid future occurrences.” It does not mean every one-off task needs a system.
A useful exercise is to take a recurring task and ask one step broader: “Is there a way to stop this class of problem from coming back?” If the answer is no—or if the added abstraction does not help—return to the direct request.

How do I get AI to challenge my thinking?
Make the request about examining your reasoning, not certifying your identity or making a consequential judgment on your behalf. You might ask it to identify assumptions in your interpretation, offer a plausible alternative explanation, or point out what evidence would change your view. Then assess its response against your own context and evidence.
Dexterlung’s “Please recalibrate me” illustrates a personal, reflective use of AI. The account does not establish that AI can reliably assess a person’s judgment, identity, business value, or direction. Treat challenges as prompts for reflection, not authoritative verdicts.

What did Dexterlung’s prompt history show?
Dexterlung reports reviewing 1,427 prompts written between mid-June and late July 2026 and organizing them into the four levels above. They also report that prompts they categorized around “method, governance, systematizing” rose from 13% in mid-to-late June to 36% in early July. These are the author’s own counts and categories, not independently verified measurements or evidence of a general trend.
The account describes one person’s changing use of AI. It does not show that people generally progress through these levels, or that asking at a higher level of abstraction causes better results. Its practical value is as a lens for noticing whether you are repeatedly solving individual instances when a broader intervention might help.
