Chrome Remote Desktop is useful for two different jobs: set up remote access to reach your own computer later, or use remote support when you need to help someone once. The service opens from a Chrome web page, but it is not fully preinstalled with Chrome: Google’s setup requires downloading and installing a host component.
Choose the workflow for the job

Google’s instructions cover Mac, Windows, and Linux as host computers. A computer client uses the web interface; mobile devices can connect through the Chrome Remote Desktop app. See Google’s instructions for accessing another computer.

Set up ongoing access to your own computer
Use this workflow when you want to reach a computer you control while away from it. Complete setup on the host computer first; the PIN is for connecting to that configured host, not for starting a temporary help session.
- On the host, open Chrome and go to remotedesktop.google.com/access.
- Choose the setup option and follow the prompts to download and install the Chrome Remote Desktop host component.
- Finish the setup and create a PIN when prompted. Your computer may request its own password or ask you to change a security setting.
- When you want to connect, open Chrome Remote Desktop on the client, select the host computer from the access list, and enter its PIN.
Once connected, you can use the remote computer’s files and applications. Keep the host available and connected to the internet; the connection still depends on network access and applicable security or organization settings.

Use a one-time code to help someone
Remote support is not the right shortcut for unattended access to your own computer. It is a separate, host-approved sharing flow.
- On the computer to be helped, open Chrome and go to remotedesktop.google.com/support. Install the host component if the page prompts you to do so.
- Generate a support code and send it only to the intended helper.
- The helper enters the code. Before sharing, the host reviews the helper’s email address and selects Share to approve the session.
- When the task is finished, stop sharing or disconnect.
During an approved support session, Google says the helper receives full access to the host computer’s apps, files, email, documents, and history. Share only with someone you trust, and end the session as soon as the help is complete.

Disconnect or turn off future access
To end a current session, close its tab or choose Disconnect. To prevent future connections to a configured host, open the access list and choose Disable remote connections for that computer. Ending a session and disabling remote connections are different: the first stops the current connection; the second removes that host’s remote-access availability.

What to know about security and managed devices
Google states in its Chrome Help documentation: “For your security, all remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted.” That statement describes session encryption; it does not change the broad access granted to a helper during an approved support session.

For managed ChromeOS and enterprise settings, Google documents administrator controls and, for selected managed-device contexts, data categories such as remote-session authentication, software setup and inventory, operating-system setup and inventory, and product or service usage. Those descriptions apply to the managed contexts Google specifies; they should not be generalized to every consumer setup. If the computer belongs to a workplace or school, its administrator may control whether Chrome Remote Desktop is available.

- Check the basics: Confirm that both computers have internet access and that you are using the correct access workflow, host, PIN, or support code.
- Check network and security rules: Antivirus software, firewalls, or work and school network policies may block the connection. Google lists outbound UDP, inbound UDP responses, TCP 443, and TCP/UDP 3478 (STUN) as traffic that may need to be allowed.
- Check device management: A managed-account or administrator policy may prevent access. Contact the organization’s administrator instead of trying to bypass its controls.
- Update the browser: Google advises using the latest Chrome or ChromeOS version. Software version and network conditions can affect availability.
Google’s administrator guidance for controlling Chrome Remote Desktop covers organizational controls. For Linux hosts, Google also documents host installation and optional virtual-desktop session configuration; those steps are intended for users who need that Linux-specific setup.
