You apply through a bank or non-banking financial company (NBFC) that offers green finance, then demonstrate that your project fits an eligible environmental category, has a credible technical design and will deliver measurable benefits. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules guide how lenders evaluate and monitor such finance, but each lender sets its own products, limits, security requirements and document checklist.
The strongest application connects one proposed asset to one recognized category, a defensible baseline and evidence such as designs, quotations, permits, commissioning records and operating data. The steps below explain how to prepare that case, including the special conditions for priority-sector classification.

What a green loan is in India
A green loan finances a defined project, asset or activity that is expected to produce environmental benefits. Depending on the lender, the borrower may be an individual, proprietorship, partnership, limited liability partnership (LLP), company or another eligible entity. The facility can fund construction, purchase, installation, retrofit or associated infrastructure, subject to the lender’s policy.
RBI provides the categories and governance expectations, but it does not operate a public application portal for every borrower. A bank or NBFC decides whether it offers green finance, which applicants it accepts, how it appraises the project, what security it requires and how it verifies results. A product advertised as green is therefore not automatically available for every solar, electric-vehicle or efficiency proposal.

Why the evidence matters
RBI’s 2023 framework for acceptance of green deposits says a financing framework should include a process for project evaluation and selection, including identifying projects fit for lending or investment within eligible categories, and for monitoring and validating sustainability information supplied by the borrower. A lender therefore needs more than an environmental description. It needs enough technical and financial information to decide that the proceeds will be used for the stated project and that the claimed benefit can be checked.
Which projects can fit an eligible green category?
RBI’s framework recognizes the following broad areas. The exact interpretation, exclusions and technical thresholds are lender-specific.
| RBI-aligned category | Typical Indian project examples | Evidence to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Renewable energy | Solar, wind, biomass or hydropower generation and related equipment | Generation capacity, technology specification, site control, grid or interconnection approvals, supplier or engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) quotation and expected output |
| Energy efficiency | LED conversion, efficient motors, building retrofits, high-efficiency equipment and process upgrades | Existing energy use, baseline method, proposed equipment ratings, operating assumptions and expected reduction per unit of service or output |
| Clean transportation | Electric vehicles, fleet conversion and charging infrastructure | Vehicle or charger specifications, route or duty-cycle assumptions, purchase quotation, charging plan and comparison with the replaced vehicle or fuel use |
| Climate-change adaptation | Assets designed to reduce vulnerability to climate hazards | Hazard assessment, adaptation design, location details and measurable resilience objective |
| Sustainable water and waste management | Wastewater treatment, water-efficiency systems, recycling and resource-recovery facilities | Flow or volume baseline, treatment or recovery capacity, permits, process design and expected reduction or reuse |
| Pollution prevention and control | Equipment that reduces air, water or soil pollution | Pollutant baseline, control technology, applicable consent or permit and expected performance |
| Green buildings | Buildings designed or certified under a recognized green-building standard | Design drawings, certification target or registration, energy and water model, construction budget and approvals |
| Sustainable management of living natural resources and land use | Projects that manage land or biological resources sustainably | Land rights, management plan, applicable approvals and measurable resource-management outcomes |
| Biodiversity conservation | Projects protecting or restoring ecosystems and habitats | Site and ecological assessment, legal permissions, implementation plan and monitoring indicators |
State the category in the first page of your proposal. If the activity spans two categories, identify the primary one and explain the connection rather than presenting a broad claim that the entire business is green.
Step 1: Define the borrower, asset and funding request
Write a one-page project definition before approaching lenders. It should answer:

- Who is borrowing: individual, proprietorship, partnership, LLP, company or another legal form?
- What asset or works will be financed, and where will they be installed?
- Does the applicant own the site, hold a lease or rely on another party’s permission?
- What is the requested amount, total project cost and proposed repayment period?
- What environmental problem is being addressed, and which metric will show improvement?
- When will procurement, installation, commissioning and operation occur?
Separate eligible green expenditure from ordinary working capital, unrelated construction or general business expenses. Ask the lender whether associated costs such as design, civil works, installation, testing or a battery are financeable; do not assume that every line on an invoice qualifies.
Step 2: Map the proposal to an accepted category
Create a category map that a credit officer and technical reviewer can audit quickly.
| Application field | What to write | Illustrative evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Project activity | Exact asset, location and purpose | Project note, site plan, photographs or drawings |
| Recognized category | RBI-aligned category and, where relevant, the lender’s taxonomy | Product terms or written confirmation from the lender |
| Technical specification | Capacity, efficiency rating, technology, operating hours and useful life | Manufacturer datasheet, EPC design and signed quotation |
| Expected benefit | Annual energy generated or saved, water reused, waste diverted, emissions avoided or resilience indicator | Calculation workbook and operating assumptions |
| Verification document | Document that can prove installation and operation | Invoice, commissioning certificate, meter record, inspection report or certification |
For an efficiency project, show both the existing baseline and the post-project estimate. Federal Bank’s published Green Loan Scheme gives an example threshold of reducing energy consumption per unit of service output by at least 15–20%. That is an example of one lender’s stated approach, not a universal Indian rule. Explain how the baseline was measured, what output is being held constant and whether the reduction is an estimate or an observed result.

Step 3: Assemble the evidence pack
Technical and commercial documents
- Technical design, capacity and equipment schedule.
- Supplier, contractor or EPC quotations with taxes, delivery, installation and commissioning separated.
- Itemized capital expenditure and any requested operating-cost component.
- Implementation schedule with procurement, site work, testing and commercial operation dates.
- Operating assumptions: load, generation, utilization, degradation, maintenance and replacement cycles.
Site, ownership and regulatory documents
- Proof of ownership or lease and permission to install or build.
- Land, building, environmental, electrical, grid or local-authority approvals that apply to the project.
- For a leased site, the lease term and lender’s rights if the asset is repossessed or the lease ends.
- For a building or fleet, evidence that the borrower controls the relevant asset during the loan term.
Borrower and credit documents
- Know-your-customer documents and constitution documents for the applicant.
- Bank statements, income-tax filings, audited or reviewed financial statements and existing-debt details requested by the lender.
- Promoter or guarantor information where required.
- Repayment source, projected cash flow and sensitivity to lower-than-expected savings or generation.
Impact and baseline documents
- At least one year of historical electricity, fuel, water or waste data when available.
- A transparent baseline calculation and the formula used for the projected improvement.
- Expected annual energy generation or savings, water reduction or reuse, waste diverted, pollution reduction or emissions impact.
- Measurement method, meter locations, reporting frequency and the person responsible for collecting data.
Keep original quotations, approvals and calculations in a version-controlled folder. If a quotation changes after sanction, retain both versions and tell the lender which one supports the final disbursement.

- Max Battery Voltage: 32V
Step 4: Find a lender and obtain its current checklist
Search for a named green-loan, renewable-energy, electric-vehicle, efficiency or green-building product, then contact the branch or business-finance team. Federal Bank’s published Green Loan Scheme is one concrete example: it lists business units including individuals, proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs and companies; covers renewable-energy and efficiency investments; states a loan amount above ₹10 lakh to ₹500 lakh; and directs applicants to a branch or callback. Those figures and eligibility terms are that bank’s published terms for its current page and must be rechecked before filing.
Ask each prospective lender for written answers to the following:
- Which project categories and technologies are accepted, and what exclusions apply?
- Is the product available to residential borrowers, businesses or both?
- What are the minimum and maximum amounts, margin, collateral, guarantees, fees and repayment terms?
- Does the lender require approved vendors, an independent technical appraisal or an energy audit?
- Will disbursement be staged against purchase orders, invoices, installation or commissioning?
- What impact reports, inspections, meter readings or third-party assurance will be required?
- Can the facility qualify for priority-sector lending (PSL), and under which conditions?
Do not treat a call-centre statement as final approval. Save the product sheet, email responses and the submitted checklist so you can demonstrate what was represented when the application was made.
Step 5: Submit the application and preserve an audit trail
- Submit the borrower and credit forms. Match names, addresses, ownership details and financial figures across every document.
- Attach the project note and category map. Put the requested amount, total cost, environmental objective and expected metrics on the first page.
- Provide technical quotations and approvals. Explain any gap, such as an approval that will be issued after sanction but before installation.
- Answer appraisal questions with calculations. Identify assumptions instead of presenting projections as measured facts.
- Confirm the intended use of proceeds. Ask whether proceeds may be paid directly to vendors and which invoices are acceptable.
- Review the sanction letter. Check the sanctioned purpose, amount, interest mechanism, security, covenants, reporting duties, disbursement milestones and events of default.
- Retain every post-sanction record. Keep purchase orders, invoices, delivery notes, photographs, commissioning certificates and meter data.
If the lender declines green classification but offers ordinary asset finance, ask for the specific reason. The issue may be an ineligible category, insufficient baseline, missing permit, vendor restriction or credit-policy problem rather than the environmental merits of the project.

How to prove common project types qualify
Solar, wind, biomass and other renewable energy
Describe the technology, rated capacity, expected annual output, site and connection arrangement. Attach the EPC design, equipment datasheets, land or roof rights, quotation and permissions. Explain whether the system is captive, grid-connected or supplying another user, and identify who will own and operate it. Generation projections should state irradiation, wind, feedstock, utilization, degradation and maintenance assumptions where relevant.
Electric vehicles and charging infrastructure
Identify the vehicle class, battery or charger specification, number of units, routes or duty cycle and charging location. Compare the proposed vehicle or fleet with the vehicle or fuel use it replaces. A lender may need purchase orders, registration or lease documents, charger quotations, electrical-load approval and a plan for recording electricity consumption and vehicle use.
Energy-efficiency equipment and retrofits
Start with a measured baseline: electricity or fuel consumed per unit of production, floor area, operating hour or other stable service output. List the old equipment, proposed replacement, rated efficiency, operating schedule and expected savings. A 15–20% reduction example published by Federal Bank illustrates why the unit of service and baseline method must be explicit; it does not establish a threshold for every lender.

Water, waste and pollution-control systems
Quantify incoming flow or waste, treatment or recovery capacity, operating hours and expected output quality. Include process diagrams, consent or permit documents, disposal or offtake arrangements and sampling or monitoring plans. A recycling machine without evidence of feedstock, operation and recovered-material handling may be treated as ordinary equipment rather than a green project.
Priority-sector lending: an important but separate test
Under RBI’s 2025 Directions, Renewable Energy is a priority-sector category. Renewable-energy bank loans up to ₹35 crore to eligible borrowers, and up to ₹10 lakh per individual household borrower, can qualify for PSL classification under the stated conditions. The limits are RBI’s PSL conditions, not a promise that a particular green-loan product will be classified that way.
Ask the lender to state in writing whether your proposed borrower, technology, amount and end use satisfy the applicable PSL rules. A green label does not automatically create PSL eligibility, and PSL treatment does not guarantee approval, a lower rate or a subsidy. The lender must apply the current Directions and its own credit policy.
How lenders may monitor the project after sanction
Expect the lender to verify that proceeds reached the approved project. Depending on the product, monitoring may include vendor payments, site inspection, commissioning evidence, photographs, meter readings, operating reports and an annual impact statement. RBI’s green-deposit framework also refers to reporting, third-party assurance and impact assessment at the framework level. That governance requirement should not be read as a promise that every individual borrower will receive the same assurance process, but you should be prepared to supply traceable data.
Use a simple monitoring register with the date, meter or source, reading, calculation, responsible person and supporting file. Record downtime, equipment replacement and material changes. If actual savings or generation differ from the estimate, report the reason rather than changing the baseline retrospectively.
Comparing green-loan offers
| Comparison point | Questions to ask | Why it affects the application |
|---|---|---|
| Category and exclusions | Is the exact technology accepted? Are used assets, batteries, civil works or working capital excluded? | Prevents a technically sound project from being rejected as outside the product. |
| Loan size | What are the minimum and maximum amounts, and are limits one-time or revolving? | Determines whether the full project can be financed. |
| Pricing and fees | What rate basis, processing fee, inspection charge and prepayment terms apply? | Allows a realistic project cash-flow calculation. |
| Security and margin | What collateral, guarantee, borrower contribution or insurance is required? | Changes the upfront funding need and execution risk. |
| Technical appraisal | Is an energy audit, engineer certificate, approved vendor or independent assessor required? | Sets the cost and schedule for preparing evidence. |
| Disbursement | Are payments staged against orders, invoices, delivery or commissioning? | Aligns the loan with supplier contracts and cash needs. |
| Impact reporting | Which metrics, frequency and verification standard apply? | Determines the records you must maintain after drawdown. |
| PSL treatment | Will this borrower and amount be reported under current PSL rules? | Separates a regulatory classification from marketing language. |
Common rejection reasons and practical fixes
- No recognized category: Rewrite the proposal around the financed asset and map it to the lender’s taxonomy.
- Unverifiable benefit: Add a baseline, unit of service, calculation method and measurement plan.
- Incomplete site rights or permits: Obtain the approval or document the condition that must be met before disbursement.
- Mixed-use spending: Split eligible invoices from ordinary business costs and request finance only for the approved lines.
- Unrealistic projections: Use conservative operating assumptions and show sensitivity to lower output or savings.
- Vendor or technology exclusion: Ask whether an alternative approved supplier or specification is acceptable before signing a purchase order.
- Credit weakness: Strengthen the repayment case with current financial statements, debt details, cash-flow projections and an appropriate borrower contribution.
- Confusion over PSL: Request a written classification decision; do not rely on the word “green” in advertising.
Applicant’s final checklist
- Borrower legal form, KYC and financial statements are consistent.
- Asset, site, ownership or lease and requested amount are clearly stated.
- Project is mapped to an accepted RBI-aligned and lender-specific category.
- Technical design, capacity, quotation and implementation schedule are attached.
- Permits, grid approvals, certification documents or consent requirements are addressed.
- Baseline and projected energy, water, waste, pollution, emissions or resilience metrics are calculated.
- Eligible and non-eligible expenditure is separated.
- Lender’s current rate, collateral, margin, fees, exclusions and reporting duties are confirmed in writing.
- PSL eligibility has been considered separately from green eligibility.
- A post-disbursement system exists for invoices, commissioning evidence and impact data.
What to expect about approval, rates and incentives
Neither RBI’s framework nor a lender’s green label guarantees approval, a particular interest rate, tax treatment or government subsidy. Creditworthiness, security, project economics, documentation and current policy remain decisive. Product limits and environmental thresholds can change, so verify the lender’s current page and checklist immediately before submitting.
