The safest method is to empty the cabinet, level it, and secure a solid cabinet member to a wall stud with a furniture anti-tip bracket and strap. If the corner does not line up with a stud, fasten a wood or steel mounting strip to two studs, then attach the cabinet restraint to that strip. For drywall, plaster, brick, or concrete, use anchors and drill bits rated for that wall and for the cabinet’s expected load.
Keep heavy items on the lowest shelves, do not use the top as a seat or climbing point, and never let children climb or hang on the cabinet. An anti-tip restraint reduces risk; it cannot make an overloaded or poorly assembled cabinet impossible to tip.

Why a corner display cabinet needs a wall anchor
A corner cabinet can look stable because two sides meet the walls, but that geometry does not stop the cabinet from rotating forward if a door is pulled, shelves are loaded unevenly, or a child climbs on it. Glass doors and shelves also add weight high above the floor, where they increase the leverage of a tip-over.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Anchor It campaign advises anchoring furniture with drawers, doors, and shelves immediately and following the restraint manufacturer’s instructions. In a 2023 statement, CPSC Chair Alex Hoehn-Saric said anchoring furniture and televisions to the wall is critical to help prevent tip-over incidents. No authoritative published injury count or load figure specific to corner display cabinets is established, so do not treat a generic weight claim as a safety rating for your cabinet.

Anchoring is a restraint system, not a substitute for sound furniture. Repair loose joints, replace damaged hardware, and follow the cabinet maker’s assembly instructions before installing the wall connection.
Assess the cabinet, wall and installation point first
Empty the cabinet and inspect its structure
Remove every object, shelf and removable door that the cabinet instructions allow you to remove. The lighter cabinet is easier to level and less likely to shift while you drill. Look inside the top, side rails or other thick structural members for a place where a screw can bite into solid wood or engineered wood.
Do not fasten the furniture bracket to a thin stapled back panel, a loose fiberboard sheet, or a narrow veneered edge. Those parts can pull out even when the wall screw is secure. If the cabinet has no obvious structural member near the top, consult its instructions or add a solid internal cleat before relying on a restraint.

Identify the wall construction
Determine whether the chosen corner has a wood stud, drywall or plaster over framing, brick, or concrete. A stud finder helps locate framing behind a finished wall, but confirm the result with a small pilot hole or another method appropriate to your wall. Studs commonly run from floor to ceiling and are often spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, so the nearest one may be just outside the cabinet’s original position.

For masonry, distinguish brick or concrete from a decorative surface. When the brick face is available, avoid drilling mortar joints; mortar is generally a less dependable attachment point than the brick itself. If the wall is unusual, hollow, or damaged, ask a qualified installer to select the anchoring method.
Gather the right hardware and tools
| Wall and cabinet condition | Recommended equipment | Important selection rule |
|---|---|---|
| Wood stud behind the wall | Furniture anti-tip kit, stud finder, pencil, drill, correctly sized bit and screwdriver | Use the kit’s supplied screw or a screw long enough to achieve solid engagement in the stud, as specified by the kit. |
| Drywall or plaster with no stud at the attachment point | Furniture anti-tip kit, drill, pilot bit and heavy-duty wall anchors made for the wallboard | Choose anchors rated for the cabinet and its contents; ordinary light-duty picture-hanging plugs are not a substitute. |
| Brick or concrete | Anti-tip kit, masonry bit, heavy-duty hammer drill, compatible concrete or masonry anchors and an impact driver or suitable screwdriver | Match the anchor and screw system to the actual masonry and follow its drilling diameter and embedment requirements. |
| Corner misses the nearest stud | Wood 2×4 or steel horizontal mounting strip, structural screws or anchors for two studs, plus the anti-tip kit | The strip must be firmly attached to two studs before the cabinet restraint is attached to it. |
Furniture anti-tip kits commonly contain two brackets or plates and a connecting strap. The strap may be heavy nylon, braided steel or a similar material; the brackets may be metal or thick plastic. CPSC’s 2023 guidance said such kits could be purchased locally or ordered online for $20 or less at that time. Treat that figure as historical guidance, not a current price or a guarantee of quality.
Choose the restraint arrangement
The “best” kit is the one whose wall fastener, strap and furniture screw can all be installed in sound material and whose rating suits the cabinet. Compare these arrangements before drilling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Arrangement | When it works best | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct attachment to one stud | The cabinet’s top rail or another solid member is close enough to a stud | Fewest parts and the most direct load path | You may need to shift the cabinet a few inches to line up the bracket. |
| Stud-mounted wood or steel strip | The corner position falls between studs | Lets the cabinet remain in the intended location while spreading the connection across two studs | Requires precise strip placement and additional drilling; the strip may be visible inside or behind the cabinet. |
| Heavy-duty drywall or plaster anchor | No suitable stud is reachable and the wallboard is sound | Useful for a retrofit when moving the cabinet is not practical | Capacity depends strongly on the anchor type, wall condition and installation; never use an un-rated general-purpose plug. |
| Masonry anchor | Brick or concrete is the structural wall at the attachment point | Provides a solid connection when drilled to the anchor maker’s specification | Requires masonry tools, correct hole depth and care to avoid weak mortar or damaged brick. |
Straps are usually the easiest restraint to retrofit and can be less demanding than a rigid bracket. A rigid bracket or a mounting strip can be less visible, but it needs more exact hole placement. In every arrangement, the furniture-side fastener must enter a substantial cabinet member, and the wall-side fastener must be rated for the actual wall.

Step-by-step: anchor the cabinet to a wood stud
- Read both sets of instructions. Check the cabinet assembly guide and the anti-tip kit directions. Note the required screw sizes, pilot-hole diameters, bracket orientation, strap tension and any prohibition on drilling particular panels.
- Empty and position the cabinet. Remove the contents, move the cabinet into the intended corner and leave enough access to mark and drill. Do not try to install the restraint with fragile glassware still inside.
- Level and stabilize the cabinet. Use the cabinet’s built-in levelers or feet exactly as its instructions direct. Confirm that it sits flat and does not rock before measuring the restraint point. If the cabinet cannot be made stable, stop and correct that problem first.
- Locate the stud. Scan the wall behind the cabinet with a stud finder. Because studs are commonly 16 or 24 inches apart, the closest one may not be centered behind the corner. If moving the cabinet a few inches preserves its appearance and puts the bracket over a stud, do that rather than forcing an unreliable anchor.
- Select a strong furniture attachment point. Choose a thick top rail, side rail or other structural member. Keep the bracket away from a veneered edge and away from a thin back panel that is merely stapled in place.
- Mark the wall bracket. Hold the wall-side bracket at the height specified by the kit, mark its holes through the bracket, and verify that the marks are centered over the stud. Keep the bracket accessible enough to attach and tighten the strap.
- Drill and fasten into the stud. Drill the pilot hole specified by the kit. Drive the wall screw through the bracket and into the stud while maintaining firm resistance as the screw enters the framing. If the screw spins without resistance, stop; you may have missed the stud or used a hole that is too large.
- Attach the strap to the wall bracket. Connect the strap exactly as shown in the kit instructions. Do not substitute a lighter cord, adhesive pad or improvised wire.
- Mark and fasten the furniture side. Hold the cabinet-side plate against the selected structural member, mark its holes and drill the specified pilot holes. Install the supplied screws or approved alternatives into solid cabinet material. Avoid over-tightening, which can strip engineered wood.
- Reconnect and tension the restraint. Push the cabinet back into its final position without crushing the strap. Join the two strap ends, remove slack and tighten according to the kit instructions. The strap should restrain forward movement without pulling the cabinet out of level.
- Test before reloading. Apply gentle forward pressure at the cabinet’s upper area. It should remain stable and the brackets should not shift. If anything moves, empty the cabinet again and correct the connection before returning the contents.
When no stud lines up with the corner
Use a wood or steel mounting strip
A corner cabinet often lands between studs. The Home Safe Home handout recommends attaching a horizontal wood 2×4 or steel strip to two studs, then fastening the furniture restraint to that strip. This creates a continuous target behind the cabinet instead of relying on a single off-center screw.
- Expose or accurately locate two neighboring studs and mark their centers.
- Cut a straight 2×4 or select a steel strip long enough to span both studs and provide a solid screw location behind the cabinet’s attachment point.
- Hold the strip at the restraint height, level it, and mark the stud locations.
- Drill pilot holes appropriate to the strip and structural screws, then secure the strip to both studs. Do not attach the strip only to drywall.
- Attach the wall-side anti-tip bracket to the strip where it aligns with the cabinet’s structural member.
- Fasten the furniture-side plate and strap as described in the standard installation steps.
Keep the strip from interfering with doors, shelves, electrical outlets or the cabinet’s ability to sit flush. If the strip would be visible, a qualified carpenter can recess or conceal it, but concealment must not reduce the number or quality of structural fasteners.
Anchoring to drywall or plaster without a stud
When a stud cannot be reached, use a heavy-duty anchor specifically made for the wallboard and furniture application. Health Canada recommends angle braces or safety straps secured to a wall stud, or heavy-duty drywall anchors designed for the furniture type. Follow the anchor maker’s required hole diameter, clearance, installation tool and weight rating.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that the drywall or plaster is sound, dry and firmly attached to the framing. Do not rely on a crumbling, water-damaged or loose surface.
- Mark the bracket holes and check behind the location for wiring or plumbing using appropriate precautions.
- Drill the exact pilot or clearance hole required by the selected anchor. Plaster can chip or crack if you force a large bit through it.
- Install the anchor fully and verify that its sleeve, toggle or threaded body has engaged as designed.
- Drive the bracket screw into the installed anchor, then attach and tension the strap to the cabinet’s structural member.
A drywall anchor’s advertised capacity is not automatically the capacity of the complete restraint. The cabinet screw, bracket, wallboard condition and the direction of the pulling force all matter. If the manufacturer does not state that the anchor is suitable for furniture restraint, choose a different system or relocate to a stud.

Anchoring to brick or concrete
For brick or concrete, use a masonry bit and a hammer drill or heavy-duty drill, together with concrete or masonry anchors compatible with the anti-tip bracket. Select the anchor for the actual substrate: solid concrete, hollow block and brick do not behave identically.
- Mark the bracket position and inspect the area for utilities or concealed services.
- Choose a point in the brick face or concrete rather than a mortar joint whenever the brick face is available.
- Drill with the specified masonry bit to the required diameter and depth. Keep the drill square to the wall so the anchor seats evenly.
- Clear dust from the hole as the anchor instructions require, then install the anchor without damaging its threads or sleeve.
- Secure the wall bracket, attach the strap, and fasten the furniture-side plate to a solid cabinet member.
Do not substitute a wood screw in a masonry plug or use a plastic light-duty anchor for a loaded display cabinet. If the masonry is cracked, hollow, unusually thin or covered by a fragile finish, get advice from a qualified installer before drilling.
Load and use the cabinet safely
- Put the heaviest objects on the lowest shelves. This lowers the center of gravity and reduces the forward force on the restraint.
- Keep shelves balanced. Avoid concentrating dense objects at the front edge or on one side of a shelf.
- Do not place a television or another heavy object on top unless the cabinet was specifically designed and rated for it.
- Keep doors and shelves closed and intact. Repair damaged hinges, loose shelf pins and broken glass before using the cabinet.
- Prevent climbing and hanging. Children should never climb shelves, pull on doors or hang from the cabinet, even after an anti-tip kit is installed.
- Do not defeat the restraint. Leave enough slack for normal positioning but do not remove, cut or disconnect the strap during cleaning or moving without reinstalling it.
A manufacturer warning commonly included with restraints is that the device may reduce, but does not eliminate, tip-over risk. The restraint works together with sensible loading, stable assembly and supervision; it is not permission to exceed the cabinet’s design.

The screw spins or pulls out of the wall
Stop using the cabinet and remove the load. A spinning screw usually indicates that the pilot hole is oversized, the stud was missed, or the wall anchor is unsuitable or damaged. Re-locate the connection over a confirmed stud, install the correct heavy-duty anchor, or build the two-stud mounting strip described above. Do not simply use a longer screw in the same failed hole.

- WIDELY APPLICATION - The wall anchors can be widely used for all kinds of furniture which may cause an unnecessary incident to toddlers, such as bookcases, bookshelves, dressers, cabinets, wardrobes. The anti-tip anchor is detachable that you can detach it anytime if you need to clean behind furniture or remove the furniture.
- HIGH QUALITY - These furniture straps are made of high-quality stainless steel material, a high resistance to corrosion means that it will never rust during whole life use. And it has a resistance to fire and heat. What’s more, the straps are more sturdy and durable than other plastic straps, which will provide a perfect effect on baby safety.
The cabinet rocks after anchoring
The wall restraint should not be used to compensate for an uneven base. Recheck the cabinet feet or levelers using the cabinet instructions, confirm that all joints and fasteners are tight, and then retension the strap. If the cabinet still rocks, unload it and repair the base or assembly before proceeding.
The corner position blocks the stud
Move the cabinet a few inches if the design allows. A small change can align the attachment point with a stud, which is generally preferable to a marginal wallboard anchor. If the position cannot change, install a properly secured wood or steel strip across two studs.
The furniture-side panel is too thin
Do not drive the restraint screw into a thin back panel or veneered edge. Look for a thicker rail or side member, or add a solid internal cleat that is mechanically connected to the cabinet frame. If no structural attachment point exists, the cabinet may require professional reinforcement before it can be safely restrained.

Visibility is a design issue, not a reason to omit the restraint. Reposition the bracket within the manufacturer’s permitted range, use a stud-mounted strip behind the cabinet, or select a compatible bracket style that still provides a rated connection. Keep the strap accessible for inspection and retightening.
Inspection after installation
Before reloading, check that every bracket sits flat, every screw head is seated, the wall anchor has not spun, and the strap has no cuts, severe kinks or damaged stitching. Open and close the doors gently and confirm that the cabinet remains level. Reinspect the connection after the cabinet is moved, after major cleaning or reloading, and whenever you notice rocking, a gap at the wall or a loose fastener. Follow any inspection interval stated by the restraint manufacturer.
If you cannot identify a solid furniture member, cannot determine the wall type, or find damage in the wall or cabinet, stop and have the installation evaluated by a qualified professional. A correctly selected anti-tip kit is only as reliable as the structure receiving its screws.
