Analyze Sherwin-Williams by separating GAAP results from adjusted figures, tracing growth by segment and acquisition contribution, checking whether earnings convert to operating cash, and valuing the shares against a clearly dated price and earnings measure. The distinction matters: in FY2025 sales rose 2.1% while GAAP diluted EPS fell 2.7%; adjusted diluted EPS rose 0.9%. Q2 2026 brought faster sales and profit growth, but management also said raw-material inflation pressured gross margin and demand had not meaningfully improved. The latest completed quarter in the information available as of October 9, 2026, is Q2 2026; the company’s press-release listing scheduled Q3 results for October 27, 2026.

Start with the reporting period and the right source

Use Sherwin-Williams’ own earnings releases for reported quarterly and annual results, and its annual report for the full financial statements, accounting policies, cash flow details, debt, and acquisition disclosures. Company materials are the baseline, not a substitute for comparing trends across periods. The company’s investor-relations materials provide the 2025 annual report and official results.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Keep each comparison on the same basis. Compare a quarter with the corresponding quarter a year earlier, and a full fiscal year with the prior fiscal year. Label whether a figure is GAAP or non-GAAP, whether growth is reported or organic, and whether the period includes acquisition effects. A percentage increase can look impressive while saying little about underlying demand if the business mix or consolidation perimeter changed.

As of October 9, 2026, Q2 2026 was the latest completed quarter identified in the company’s results materials. The company’s press-release listing scheduled its Q3 2026 results for October 27, 2026, so any later analysis should first check whether that release has changed the latest available figures or outlook. Separate GAAP earnings from adjusted earnings

What FY2025’s divergence says

In FY2025, Sherwin-Williams reported $23.57 billion in net sales, up 2.1%. GAAP diluted EPS was $10.26, down 2.7%, while adjusted diluted EPS was $11.43, up 0.9%. Those figures tell different stories: sales grew, adjusted per-share earnings edged higher, and GAAP per-share earnings declined. An analysis that presents only the adjusted figure obscures the reported decline; one that gives only GAAP EPS misses the company’s adjusted comparison.

Do not treat adjusted EPS as a replacement for GAAP. Show both, identify adjusted EPS as a non-GAAP measure, and use the company’s reconciliation to explain the adjustments. Read the reconciliation rather than assuming that all excluded costs are exceptional, nonrecurring, or economically irrelevant. If a cost recurs, or reflects the ongoing price of acquisitions or restructuring, that can affect how much weight an investor should put on the adjusted trend.

What changed in Q2 2026

Q2 2026 results showed $6.79 billion in sales, up 7.5%; net income of $843.6 million, up 11.8%; and EBITDA of $1.43 billion, up 13.8%, equal to 21.1% of sales. The company separately reported adjusted diluted EPS of $3.70, up 9.5%, and GAAP diluted EPS of $3.43, up 14.3%. Preserve those labels: the EPS growth rates refer to different measures, and the release’s EBITDA figure is not interchangeable with adjusted EBITDA.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The company reported adjusted EBITDA margin of 21.5%, an increase of 60 basis points. That is an adjusted measure and must not be called the unadjusted EBITDA margin. When comparing margins or growth, use the same definition in both periods and state it plainly. For both annual and quarterly figures, the company’s release is the source for the reported values and the adjusted/non-adjusted distinctions. (The Sherwin-Williams Company, FY2025 and Q2 2026 results releases.)

Build an earnings bridge instead of choosing a favorite number

A useful earnings bridge explains how sales growth, operating performance, financing and share count, and adjustments relate to the change in diluted EPS. Start with GAAP net income and diluted EPS; then show the company’s reconciliation to adjusted earnings. Check the annual report and release for the precise items included in that bridge. The available FY2025 figures establish the divergence between GAAP and adjusted EPS, but do not, on their own, identify the full contribution of each adjustment.

Acquisitions are part of the comparison. FY2025 included Suvinil. Q2 2026 results included the Suvinil acquisition and Valspar-related amortization. The Q2 release’s 2026 guidance also included acquisition-related amortization and restructuring expenses. These disclosures mean a year-over-year sales or earnings change should not automatically be attributed to comparable-business demand. Use the filings and segment tables to identify what is included and avoid describing acquired growth as organic growth unless the company provides a comparable measure.

Trace growth through the three segments

Consolidated sales and margin can conceal very different demand conditions across the company. For FY2025, the disclosed trends differed by segment:

Segment FY2025 reported context What to test in the results
Paint Stores Group Growth included protective and marine, residential repaint, and commercial; segment margin expanded. Check segment sales and profit together, and assess whether growth and margin expansion persist across periods rather than relying on one year’s mix.
Consumer Brands Group Growth was driven by Suvinil while core North American do-it-yourself demand remained soft. Separate acquired contribution from the underlying demand picture. Consider the contrast between Suvinil-led growth and soft core North American DIY demand.
Performance Coatings Group Sales were flat. High-single-digit Packaging growth and record new-account growth offset softness elsewhere in the business. Do not treat growth in one category or new-account wins as proof that demand strengthened across the segment; compare category and segment results over time.

These are company-reported FY2025 descriptions, not a complete set of segment revenue or profit figures. Use the release and annual report tables for the actual amounts and margins before calculating segment growth or contribution. The key analytical point is that consolidated results combine businesses with different growth drivers and demand conditions. A changing share of sales from higher- or lower-margin activities can move consolidated margin even if each segment’s own economics are stable.

Distinguish reported growth from comparable demand

For Q2 2026, management attributed consolidated sales improvement to growth investments, account wins, increased share of wallet, and pricing. The company said improvement exceeded guidance across all three reportable segments. Those are management’s explanations. Test them against reported segment sales and profit over more than one period, and, where available, distinguish price, volume, mix, acquisitions, and currency effects. A single quarter’s explanation does not establish how much each factor contributed.

Explain margins with inputs, price, volume, and mix

Analyze gross margin, segment profit margin, and EBITDA margin as separate measures. They capture different layers of the business, and GAAP and adjusted versions should not be blended. A rise in one does not establish that all parts of the income statement improved.

In Q2 2026, CEO Heidi G. Petz said, “We also implemented pricing actions to offset raw material inflation that pressured our gross margin in the quarter.” This identifies two competing forces: higher input costs pressured gross margin, while pricing actions were intended to offset that pressure. The statement does not quantify how much of the inflation was recovered, how quickly pricing took effect, or whether volume or mix changed. Do not turn the explanation into a claim that pricing fully neutralized inflation.

Track the relationship over successive quarters:

  • Raw-material costs: Review management’s comments alongside the reported gross-margin trend. Commentary identifies a possible cause, but quantify an effect only where the company reports enough detail.
  • Pricing: Look for evidence of price realization in sales and margin trends. Announced or implemented pricing is not necessarily the same as realized price in a given period.
  • Volume and mix: Determine whether customers bought more, shifted toward different products or channels, or changed purchasing timing. Without a disclosed split, avoid assigning the whole sales increase to volume or price.
  • Segment composition: Compare segment sales and profit. Segment mix can alter consolidated results even when the segment margins themselves do not move in the same direction.

Q2’s reported EBITDA margin was 21.1%, calculated from EBITDA of $1.43 billion and sales of $6.79 billion; the company’s separately stated adjusted EBITDA margin was 21.5%, up 60 basis points. Keep each series intact when analyzing expansion. Do not use the adjusted margin’s change to describe the unadjusted measure.

Check whether earnings turn into cash

FY2025 net operating cash was $3.45 billion, equal to 14.6% of sales. This gives investors a second view of performance alongside EPS: profit is reported under accounting rules, while operating cash reflects cash generated by operations during the period, including the effects of working-capital movements.

Read the cash flow statement rather than assuming operating cash flow equals free cash flow. To estimate free cash flow, analysts commonly subtract capital expenditures from operating cash flow, but the result depends on the definition and period used. The FY2025 operating-cash figure alone does not establish free cash flow, nor does it say whether cash generation will recur at the same level.

For a fuller assessment, compare operating cash with net income across several years and inspect the cash-flow statement for working-capital changes and capital spending. A single year’s cash-to-sales ratio can be affected by timing. The company’s investor overview reports $14.3 billion of net operating cash over five years and 47 consecutive annual dividend increases, with those figures stated as of December 31, 2025. They provide company-published historical context, not a forecast of future cash generation or dividend growth. (The Sherwin-Williams Company, FY2025 results release and investor overview.)

Read guidance as a changing forecast

Guidance is management’s outlook, not a guaranteed result. Sherwin-Williams’ initial FY2026 guidance in the FY2025 release called for low-to-mid-single-digit consolidated sales growth and adjusted diluted EPS of $11.50–$11.90. By the Q2 2026 report, the company had raised its adjusted diluted EPS guidance to $11.80–$12.20 and gave GAAP diluted EPS guidance of $10.92–$11.32. The Q2 guidance included acquisition-related amortization and restructuring expenses.

When evaluating a revision, record the prior and current ranges, the date of each, and whether the same accounting basis is being compared. Here, the initial EPS range cited is adjusted, and the Q2 release provides both adjusted and GAAP ranges. Do not compare a GAAP result with an adjusted forecast as if they were like for like. Also distinguish EPS guidance from the initial sales-growth outlook; the supplied Q2 guidance figures establish an updated EPS range, not a new sales-growth range.

Put management’s demand comments in context

In the FY2025 release, Petz described “a continuation of the softer-for-longer demand environment” and said management expected those conditions to persist well into the second half of 2026, based on customer sentiment and macroeconomic indicators it tracks. In Q2, she said there had been “no meaningful improvement in demand,” while the company attributed sales growth to investment, new-account wins, share of wallet, and pricing actions. Treat these as management’s assessments, not independent forecasts or proof that demand has improved. Compare them with subsequent sales, segment performance, and later guidance.

Assess valuation with a dated price and a named denominator

A price-to-earnings ratio is meaningful only when the share price date and the earnings denominator are clear. Trailing P/E uses earnings from a past period; forward P/E uses estimates for a future period, and providers may use different inputs or calculation methods. Company adjusted guidance is a separate basis from GAAP earnings and analyst consensus. Do not combine ratios calculated on different dates or denominators into one valuation claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As dated snapshots, StockAnalysis listed an October 8, 2026 closing price of $321.03, trailing P/E of 29.06, and forward P/E of 24.56. Stock Rover’s October 4, 2026 report listed a P/E of 29.5 and forward P/E of 23.5. The values are not synchronized; vendor methods, timestamps, and calculation inputs can differ. They are reference points, not a definitive intrinsic-value conclusion. Refresh price and estimates on the date of any publication and state which source and measure each ratio uses.

One transparent cross-check is to divide a stated share price by a clearly identified EPS figure, while labeling the result as your calculation rather than a vendor’s reported multiple. For illustration, $321.03 divided by FY2025 GAAP diluted EPS of $10.26 is about 31.3; divided by FY2025 adjusted diluted EPS of $11.43 it is about 28.1. These are simple price-to-FY2025-EPS calculations using the October 8 closing price and historical fiscal-year EPS, not the same measure as a vendor’s trailing P/E. The denominator choice alone changes the apparent multiple.

You can also compare the October 8 price with the midpoint of the Q2 2026 full-year guidance ranges, but label the output carefully. The adjusted EPS midpoint is $12.00, and the GAAP midpoint is $11.12; dividing $321.03 by those amounts produces roughly 26.8 and 28.9, respectively. These are simple price-to-guidance calculations using company ranges, not consensus-based forward P/E ratios. The guidance is an outlook, not a realized result.

What a valuation judgment still needs

A P/E snapshot alone cannot establish that SHW is cheap or expensive. A sound relative or historical judgment requires aligned comparisons: a historical valuation range and relevant peers measured at the same date and on the same earnings basis. The available dated vendor snapshots do not establish a normalized peer comparison or Sherwin-Williams’ historical range, so they do not support a definitive relative-valuation verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once comparable data are assembled, ask what the multiple assumes about future sales and EPS growth, durability of margins, cash conversion, leverage, acquisition integration, and exposure to softer or cyclical demand. Check the annual report for balance-sheet debt and cash-flow details before making claims about leverage or financial flexibility. A valuation should connect those operating risks and strengths to a stated earnings measure rather than treating a single ratio as an answer.

A practical checklist for an earnings review

  1. Set the date and period. Identify the latest completed quarter, fiscal year, and release date; update them before relying on a snapshot.
  2. Show GAAP and adjusted results. Give both EPS measures where reported and read the company’s reconciliation before explaining the difference.
  3. Separate organic performance from acquisitions. Note Suvinil’s inclusion in FY2025 and Q2 2026, and account for acquisition-related amortization and restructuring in the stated guidance.
  4. Trace sales and profit by segment. Use segment tables and management’s descriptions to see whether growth is broad or concentrated, and whether segment margins support the consolidated story.
  5. Test the margin explanation. Follow gross margin, segment profit margin, and EBITDA margin separately; examine inputs, pricing, volume, mix, and segment composition without inventing an undisclosed split.
  6. Compare earnings with cash. Review operating cash flow, working capital, and capital expenditure; do not label operating cash flow as free cash flow.
  7. Track guidance revisions. Compare ranges only on matching GAAP or adjusted bases, and distinguish outlook from realized results.
  8. Date every valuation input. State the price date, EPS period or estimate, provider if applicable, and whether the multiple is calculated from GAAP, adjusted, or consensus earnings.
