To assess whether a stablecoin is liquid enough for your trade, check the exact trading pair and route: the bid-ask spread, the amount available on both sides near the current price, and the estimated slippage for your order size. Compare venues using snapshots taken close together in time. If you may need to redeem directly with the issuer, investigate that separately: exchange or pool liquidity does not establish that you are eligible to redeem or that redemption will be immediate.
What stablecoin liquidity tells you—and what it does not
Liquidity is your ability to buy or sell the amount you intend at a price close to the current market price, without waiting excessively or moving the price substantially. It is not one universal property that can be captured by a stablecoin’s name, market capitalization, or headline trading volume. The answer depends on the pair, venue or pool, direction, order size, route, and time of the transaction.

For a centralized exchange, the useful evidence is the order book: the best bid (the highest displayed price buyers are offering) and best ask (the lowest displayed price sellers are asking), plus the quantities available at prices beyond those top quotes. For a decentralized automated market maker (AMM), the relevant evidence is the specific pool’s assets and pricing curve, and the output quoted for your swap size. CoinGecko’s overview explains how crypto liquidity relates to the ability to trade without substantial price impact: What Is Liquidity in Crypto?
Keep four different questions separate:
- Is the token near its intended peg? This is about its market price, not how much you can trade at that price.
- How much has traded? Volume describes past activity over a stated period; it does not tell you how much is executable now near the current price.
- How much can this route execute near the current price? Spread, side-specific depth, and estimated slippage help answer this for a planned order.
- Can you redeem with the issuer? That depends on the issuer’s terms, your eligibility, and the capacity and operation of its redemption arrangements.
Kaiko describes spread, depth, and hypothetical-order slippage as separate ways to examine centralized-exchange liquidity: Understanding Centralized Exchange Liquidity Data. None of these measures alone guarantees that an order will execute at the displayed price.

Start with the exact trade you want to make
Before looking at a chart or a token-level ranking, write down the route you plan to use. “This stablecoin is liquid” is too broad to guide a transaction. A stablecoin can have different liquidity against different quote assets, on different exchanges, and in different decentralized pools. Even within one market, bids and asks can be uneven.
- Asset and pair: identify the stablecoin and the asset you will pay or receive. Check the exact market, not just the token ticker.
- Venue or pool: record the exchange or, for an AMM swap, the specific pool and route.
- Direction: buying consumes asks; selling consumes bids. Assess the side your order will actually use.
- Order size: use the amount you intend to trade, including any amount you might need to split into multiple transactions.
- Relevant costs: keep trading fees, swap fees, and any applicable network or withdrawal costs distinct from price slippage.
- Purpose: distinguish a trade on a secondary market from a plan to redeem directly with the issuer.
For example, a buyer and a seller using the same pair face opposite sides of the book. A market may have many bids but few asks, or the reverse. A single figure for the pair can hide that difference.
Read the spread without mistaking it for full liquidity
The bid-ask spread is the difference between the best available ask and best available bid. The midpoint, or mid-price, is halfway between them. A tighter spread generally means a lower immediate cost to cross from one side of the market to the other, before fees and any additional price movement.
For a simple percentage comparison, calculate the spread as (best ask − best bid) ÷ mid-price × 100. Use the same convention when comparing markets. The displayed best prices may cover only a small quantity: a tight top-of-book spread does not prove that a larger order can execute near the midpoint. Check the quantity posted at those prices and the depth behind them.
Kaiko lists spread among its core order-book liquidity measures. Its methodology also distinguishes spread from depth and hypothetical-order slippage, which is why a spread alone should not be used as a complete liquidity verdict: Kaiko’s explanation of centralized-exchange liquidity measures.
Check bid and ask depth at a consistent price range
Depth is the cumulative quantity available on one side of the market within a specified distance from the midpoint. Bid depth indicates how much is offered by buyers below the mid-price; ask depth indicates how much is offered by sellers above it. For a prospective sale, pay particular attention to bids. For a purchase, focus on asks.

Choose a price band that is meaningful for your order and compare like with like. A depth figure within 0.1% of mid-price is not directly comparable with one measured within 2%. If the order is larger than the displayed depth in your chosen band, the uncovered portion may require accepting worse prices or waiting for more liquidity to appear.
Do not add the two sides together and treat the total as capacity for your trade. They serve opposite directions. Nor does depth within a band say what happens beyond that band. It is a limited view of displayed orders at a specific moment.
Kaiko’s market-depth example describes measuring USD bid and ask depth within a stated range of the midpoint, and shows why depth varies by exchange and observation time: Compare Market Depth Between Exchanges. Use the same pair, side, depth band, and units when comparing venues.
Estimate slippage for your order size
Slippage is the difference between a reference price and the average price you actually receive or pay when an order consumes available liquidity. A useful estimate is specific to the amount and direction of your planned trade. A generic “slippage” score for a token cannot tell you what a particular order will cost.
- Choose a reference price and state it. For a broad market comparison, use the midpoint at the time of the order-book snapshot. You may also compare against the best quote, but do not switch benchmarks between venues.
- Walk the correct side of the book. For a buy, add up the ask quantities from the lowest ask upward until they cover the order. For a sale, use bids from the highest bid downward.
- Calculate the volume-weighted average execution price. Divide the total cost of the filled levels by the quantity bought, or divide sale proceeds by the quantity sold.
- Compare that average with your stated reference. A percentage estimate relative to the midpoint is (buy average − midpoint) ÷ midpoint × 100 for a buy, and (midpoint − sale average) ÷ midpoint × 100 for a sale. Keep fees separate so price impact is not confused with the venue’s charges.
- Check whether the order is marketable in practice. The estimate is based on an observed book. Orders can be canceled, added, or filled before yours reaches the venue, so the actual result can differ.
Order-book tools may calculate hypothetical-order slippage directly from displayed levels. Kaiko explains this type of estimate and its side-specific measurements in its liquidity methodology. Treat a calculated figure as an estimate from the observed data, not a promised execution price.

Suppose, purely as an illustration and not as a quote for any live market, the midpoint is 1.0000 units of the quote asset and a buy order’s ask-side levels produce a volume-weighted average price of 1.0015. Relative to that midpoint, estimated price impact is (1.0015 − 1.0000) ÷ 1.0000 × 100 = 0.15%, before fees. A sale must be calculated from the bid side instead. This example demonstrates the arithmetic only; it does not establish a typical spread, slippage level, or liquidity threshold for stablecoins.

Compare venues using equivalent snapshots
Repeat the spread, depth, and order-size slippage checks for other plausible routes. Compare the same stablecoin and pair, direction, order size, units, depth band, and reference-price convention. Take snapshots close together in time; liquidity can change quickly, and comparing observations from different market conditions can make one venue appear better or worse for reasons unrelated to its usual capacity.
Kaiko’s exchange-comparison example is useful for understanding why the same market-depth measure can differ across exchanges: Kaiko’s market-depth comparison example. A single snapshot is not a durable guarantee, and advertised or historical trading volume does not substitute for current executable depth. Volume is still useful as context for market activity, but pair it with current, side-specific measures.
If the amount is large relative to displayed depth, consider whether a different venue or route is appropriate, or whether an order can be split. Splitting may reduce the amount exposed at once, but it does not remove price risk, fees, changing liquidity, or the possibility that later portions execute at different prices. A limit order can constrain the price you accept, but it may not fill.

An AMM does not present a centralized list of bids and asks. A swap trades against assets held in a particular pool, following that pool’s pricing curve. The output can change with the swap size: a large trade relative to pool liquidity may move the pool price substantially.
- Identify the pool and route. Confirm the stablecoin pair and any intermediate assets used by the swap route. A token may have several pools with different liquidity.
- Check the pool’s available liquidity. Look at the assets available in the pool rather than relying only on the token’s overall volume or market capitalization.
- Enter the intended amount in the swap interface. Inspect the quoted output, price impact, and fees for that size. A quote for a small test amount does not estimate a much larger swap.
- Review any slippage tolerance setting before confirming. It controls how much the execution price may move before the transaction reverts; it does not guarantee a favorable price. A tolerance set too narrowly can cause a failed transaction, while setting it too loosely can allow a worse execution than intended.
- Recheck the quote immediately before submitting. Pool reserves and competing trades can change between quote and execution. Network conditions and transaction costs are additional considerations, not measures of pool depth.
CoinGecko’s liquidity guide discusses pool liquidity and how insufficient liquidity can produce substantial price movement in decentralized swaps: CoinGecko’s crypto-liquidity guide. For an AMM, use the quoted output or price impact for your actual order size, rather than treating a centralized order-book depth metric as interchangeable with pool liquidity.
Investigate issuer redemption as a separate route
Trading a stablecoin on an exchange or pool is not the same as redeeming it with its issuer. Secondary-market liquidity describes whether you can trade with other market participants on a route. Direct redemption depends on the issuer’s terms and whether you, in your jurisdiction and capacity, can use that process. It may also involve conditions that do not apply to an ordinary exchange sale.

Before relying on redemption, consult the issuer’s current terms for the specific stablecoin and your location. Check:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- who is eligible to redeem, including any account, identity, or jurisdiction requirements;
- minimum and maximum amounts, if stated;
- fees and the asset or currency paid out;
- operating hours, cut-off times, and settlement timing;
- how requests are submitted and what documentation is required;
- whether the terms describe suspension, delay, limits, or other conditions.
Do not infer direct redemption access from the fact that a token trades near its intended peg, or from the existence of a redemption mechanism in issuer materials. The exact holder eligibility and operational terms matter. Likewise, market depth on a venue does not prove that the issuer will accept a particular holder’s request.
The Basel Framework sets out prudential concepts for reserve liquidity and redemption capacity. It says reserve assets should be capable of rapid liquidation with minimal adverse price effect, have a reliable liquidity record even under stress, and provide sufficient daily liquidity for instant redemption requests, among other conditions. These are framework requirements and concepts, not evidence about the current financial condition or redemption performance of any particular issuer. See the Basel Framework, Scope and definitions.

Reserve information can help you understand what supports a stablecoin and how quickly those assets may be available, but a reserve report is not itself a guarantee of immediate par redemption for every holder. Consider the composition and liquidity of reserve assets, concentration in issuers or custodians, custody and legal structure, and how frequently and broadly the information is reported.
Pay attention to the difference between assets that can be sold quickly in active markets and assets that may take longer to realize or lose value under pressure. The timing of a redemption liability can matter: a stablecoin may be expected to support prompt or on-demand claims while some supporting assets are less liquid. Rapid redemption demand can therefore pose a different test from normal trading conditions.

For a stress-oriented review, ask whether reserve reporting gives enough detail to understand what the assets are, where and how they are held, and how quickly they could support redemption demand. Be precise about what a disclosure establishes: its scope and date matter, and reporting does not by itself guarantee future market liquidity, immediate settlement, or access for every holder.
Use a consistent comparison worksheet
When comparing two routes, record the observations side by side rather than relying on a single score or token-wide label.
| What to record | How to make the comparison useful |
|---|---|
| Stablecoin and pair | Use the same token and quote asset on each route. |
| Venue or pool and observation time | Identify the exact exchange or AMM pool and note when the data or quote was observed; compare observations close in time. |
| Direction and order size | Record buy or sell and use the same amount. For an AMM, enter that amount in the pool’s swap quote. |
| Spread | Record the best bid and ask and use the same calculation convention across order books. |
| Bid and ask depth | Keep the sides separate and state the same distance from the midpoint for each venue. |
| Estimated slippage or AMM price impact | Use the planned order size and state the reference price or quote convention. Keep fees separate. |
| Fees and route costs | Record the applicable trading or swap fees and any other route costs separately from price impact. |
| Redemption terms | If direct redemption is part of the plan, record holder eligibility, jurisdiction, timing, fees, limits, and conditions from the issuer’s current terms. |
| Reserve information | Note the reporting date and scope, reserve composition, liquidity, concentration, custody, and legal structure disclosed. |
There is no universal numerical cutoff in the cited materials that makes a stablecoin “liquid” for every trader. What is acceptable depends on the order size, acceptable execution cost, time horizon, and whether your fallback is a secondary-market sale or issuer redemption. Treat any threshold you choose as a decision rule for your own transaction, not an industry-wide standard.

- Using volume as the answer. Volume is historical activity over a period. It does not show how much is available now at prices you will accept.
- Checking only the side you are not using. A deep bid side does not make a large buy easy; a deep ask side does not make a large sale easy.
- Stopping at the top quote. Best bid and ask may cover only a small quantity, so inspect cumulative depth and order-size slippage.
- Comparing unlike depth bands. State the range from midpoint and keep it consistent between venues.
- Using a small AMM quote to judge a large swap. Pool price impact depends on the size being swapped relative to pool liquidity.
- Treating a displayed book as guaranteed. Orders can change before execution; a snapshot is time-sensitive.
- Conflating a peg with liquidity or redemption. A market price near par does not answer how much can be traded, who can redeem, or how quickly an issuer can meet requests.
- Ignoring fees and the full route. Low price impact can still come with costs elsewhere in the transaction. Compare total route costs while keeping them distinct from slippage.
Make the decision in the context of your transaction
For a small trade, a current quote and a check of the relevant side’s depth may be sufficient to understand likely execution. For a larger order, calculate or request size-specific slippage, compare alternative venues or pools at similar observation times, and consider whether staging the order fits your timing and fee constraints. If a sale or redemption must work under stress, assess reserve disclosures and issuer terms in addition to normal-market execution data; one cannot stand in for the other.
Your conclusion should describe the route and conditions, not label a token simply “liquid” or “illiquid.” For example: “At this observation time, this pair’s ask-side depth within the chosen band appears sufficient for the planned buy at the estimated price impact; issuer redemption access has not been established for my circumstances.” That kind of qualified judgment makes clear what the data supports and what remains a separate question.
