The safest way to analyze a non-banking financial company (NBFC) is to read three linked dashboards, not one headline number: loan growth (how quickly exposure is expanding), net interest margin (what the spread earns after interest costs), and asset quality (whether borrowers are paying and whether provisions can absorb losses). Fast growth and a high NIM can create attractive earnings, but they are only durable when funding, capital, collections and loss protection keep pace.
This framework shows how to calculate each measure, reconcile management’s presentation, detect quality problems early and compare two NBFCs on identical definitions.

The three-part dashboard
| Dashboard | Primary question | Core measures | What can mislead you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loan growth | How fast is the loan book expanding, and where? | Year-over-year growth, multi-year CAGR, disbursements, repayments, product and vintage mix | AUM, on-book loans and co-lending balances may use different perimeters; a recent cohort can inflate growth before it has seasoned |
| Net interest margin (NIM) | Is growth producing a sustainable spread? | Net interest income, average assets, asset yield, funding cost, mix and repricing | Companies may use different denominators or annualisation conventions; fees and non-accrual interest can distort comparisons |
| Asset quality | Are loans performing, and how much loss protection exists? | GNPA, NNPA, provision coverage, slippages, roll rates, recoveries, write-offs and restructuring | Write-offs, loan sales, securitisations, denominator changes or falling provisions can make headline ratios look better |
Read the three dashboards together. For example, faster unsecured growth may lift NIM, while early delinquency and collection costs rise before gross non-performing assets (GNPA) do. Conversely, a modest NIM can still produce strong returns if funding is stable, operating costs are low and credit losses are controlled.
1. Measure loan growth and its quality
Use one balance consistently
Start with the company’s reported gross loan book, advances or assets under management (AUM), then use the same measure for every period in your calculation. Year-over-year growth is:

(closing balance ÷ prior-year closing balance) − 1
For a multi-year view, use compound annual growth rate (CAGR):
(ending balance ÷ beginning balance)^(1 ÷ number of years) − 1
State the reporting dates and whether the figures are consolidated or standalone. A March year-end balance compared with a September balance is not a like-for-like annual comparison. For an interim period, check whether management has annualised the number.
Reconcile the movement, rather than trusting the percentage
A balance-sheet change should be explainable. Build a bridge from the opening balance to the closing balance:
- Opening gross loans
- Plus gross disbursements and purchased portfolios
- Minus scheduled repayments and prepayments
- Minus write-offs
- Adjust for securitisations, assignments and other derecognition
- Adjust for acquisitions or transfers
- Equals closing gross loans
If the bridge does not reconcile, investigate whether management is showing AUM while the financial statements show only on-book assets, or whether securitised and co-lent receivables are being counted differently. A high disbursement number does not necessarily mean the balance sheet grew by the same amount: repayments, prepayments and asset sales can offset origination.

Know what AUM includes
“AUM” can include on-book loans, assets serviced for another lender, co-lending exposures or receivables transferred through securitisation. “On-book loans” generally refers to assets recognised on the NBFC’s balance sheet, but the exact perimeter is company-specific. Record the definition in every spreadsheet and do not compare an AUM growth rate with another company’s on-book growth rate without adjustment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBreak growth into risk-relevant dimensions
Disaggregate the book by:
- Product, such as vehicle finance, housing, microfinance, consumer credit or infrastructure lending
- Geography and state or district concentration
- Borrower type, income source and employer or industry
- Ticket size and loan-to-value bands
- Secured versus unsecured exposure
- Origination vintage and months-on-book
A 30% headline increase can hide concentration in one region or product. A newly originated cohort may show low GNPA simply because it has not reached the period when defaults usually emerge. Compare each vintage’s 30-, 60- and 90-days-past-due curves with older cohorts, if disclosed.
Check whether capital and funding can support expansion
Compare loan growth with internal capital generation, capital adequacy and risk-weighted assets. If assets are growing materially faster than retained earnings, identify the source of incremental capital: an equity issue, subordinated debt, a parent contribution or higher leverage. Then examine funding availability and liquidity maturity gaps. A book funded heavily with short-term commercial paper or other near-term liabilities can face forced asset sales when markets tighten, even if reported credit quality is currently sound.
Sector context is useful but not a target. Reserve Bank of India data reported that performing-loan delinquency fell from 12.3% at end-March 2021 to 6.1% at end-March 2023, while standard assets with no overdues rose from 87.7% to 93.9%. Those are dated sector observations, not a universal safe level for an individual NBFC.
Illustrative growth calculation
Suppose an NBFC reports gross loans of ₹10,000 crore at the prior year-end and ₹12,500 crore one year later. The year-over-year increase is (12,500 ÷ 10,000) − 1 = 25%. If the book was ₹6,400 crore three years earlier, the three-year CAGR is (12,500 ÷ 6,400)^(1 ÷ 3) − 1, approximately 25%. These are arithmetic illustrations; replace them with the company’s consistently defined balances and then reconcile the bridge.

Net interest income (NII) is interest income minus interest expense. Confirm whether the company uses simple average assets—opening plus closing assets divided by two—or a daily average, and whether an interim figure has been annualised. A reported NIM based on average total assets cannot be compared directly with a spread calculated on average interest-earning loans.
Build a four-part NIM bridge
Asset yield
Calculate interest income divided by average interest-earning assets where the data permit. Higher-yield products often involve greater borrower risk, smaller tickets and higher servicing costs. A rising yield is therefore not automatically evidence of pricing power; test it against delinquencies, operating expense and credit cost.
Funding cost
Measure interest expense against average borrowings or other interest-bearing liabilities. Break funding into bank loans, bonds, commercial paper and deposits where the NBFC is permitted to accept them. Track the maturity mix, refinancing dates and the spread between new borrowing costs and the existing book’s average cost. A falling policy-rate environment can reduce funding cost with a lag, while a refinancing shock can reverse that benefit quickly.

Mix and repricing
Separate changes caused by product mix from changes in pricing. Record the secured/unsecured share, fixed- versus floating-rate loans, benchmark reset dates and the lag between liability repricing and asset repricing. A shift toward a high-yield product can lift NIM even if every existing product’s spread is unchanged. Conversely, floating-rate assets paired with fixed-rate liabilities can temporarily compress NIM when rates rise.
Non-accrual interest and fees
When a loan becomes non-performing, interest may stop accruing under applicable accounting rules. NIM can therefore fall as impaired assets increase, even before cash collections change. Keep origination fees, foreclosure charges and other fee income separate from NII unless the company clearly explains that its presentation includes them. A business with a strong fee contribution may have a lower NIM but comparable or better total operating revenue.
Read NIM with returns and costs
Pair NIM with operating expense, credit cost and return on assets (ROA). A simple earnings bridge is:

- NII, represented by NIM and average assets
- Plus other operating income
- Minus operating expenses
- Minus expected-loss or other credit provisions
- Equals pre-tax profit before extraordinary items
If NIM rises while early delinquencies, collection costs or unsecured concentration also rise, the improvement may be compensation for higher risk rather than durable efficiency. If NIM is flat but credit cost and operating expense fall, profitability can still improve.
3. Measure asset quality beyond GNPA
Apply the 90-day NPA rule correctly
RBI prudential guidance says an asset becomes non-performing when it ceases to generate income. For a term loan, the master-circular definition generally treats interest or principal overdue for more than 90 days as an NPA. RBI directions for NBFCs in the middle regulatory layer similarly use more-than-90-day overdue tests for specified interest, instalments, bills, leases and other dues. Always use the rule applicable to the NBFC’s regulatory layer and the reporting date.
Gross NPA (GNPA)
GNPA ratio is:
Gross NPAs ÷ gross loans or advances
It measures impaired exposure before eligible provisions and deductions. Confirm the denominator: a ratio calculated on gross advances is not interchangeable with one calculated on a narrower loan portfolio.
Net NPA (NNPA)
NNPA removes provisions and other deductions permitted under the applicable rules:
Net NPAs ÷ net advances
NNPA can fall because assets genuinely cure, because provisions increase, because loans are written off or sold, or because the denominator changes. Read the movement alongside each of those drivers.
Recommended Free Tools
Provision coverage ratio (PCR)
PCR is commonly presented as provisions held against NPAs divided by GNPA, using the company’s disclosed convention. Higher coverage generally gives more loss absorption, but it is not a guarantee: collateral may be overstated, recoveries may take years and write-offs may remove old problem loans from the numerator and denominator. Compare PCR with collateral quality, ageing, recoveries and cumulative write-offs.
Best Value
Track leading indicators
- Slippages: fresh standard-to-NPA additions during the period.
- Roll rates: movement from 30–60 days past due to 60–90 and then NPA.
- Recoveries: cash recovered from delinquent and written-off accounts.
- Restructured loans: modified repayment terms that may postpone recognition of stress.
- Written-off loans and sales: disposals that can lower GNPA without proving that the underlying borrowers improved.
Early-bucket migration often turns before GNPA. A quarter with stable GNPA but worsening 30–60-day arrears warrants attention, especially if growth is concentrated in recent vintages.
Understand NPA categories
RBI classifies NPAs as sub-standard, doubtful or loss. A sub-standard asset has remained non-performing for no more than 12 months; it becomes doubtful after more than 12 months in the sub-standard category. Loss assets are considered uncollectible or of such low value that they should not remain on the balance sheet, subject to the applicable recognition and provisioning rules.

| Indicator | Reported observation | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Provision coverage | NBFC PCR increased from 51.5% at end-March 2020 to 65.1% at end-March 2023, according to the RBI’s 2023 report. | Use as historical sector context; compare an individual company’s convention and portfolio mix before drawing conclusions. |
| GNPA and NNPA | Sector GNPA was 4.1% and NNPA 1.5% at end-September 2023 in the cited RBI report. | These are dated aggregate ratios, not safe thresholds for every product or NBFC. |
| Performing-loan delinquency | Declined from 12.3% at end-March 2021 to 6.1% at end-March 2023. | Shows sector direction over that period; it does not predict a company’s next quarter. |
| Standard assets with no overdues | Rose from 87.7% at end-March 2021 to 93.9% at end-March 2023. | Useful for context on broad payment performance, not a substitute for vintage and product analysis. |
| 2024–25 extract | A recent RBI trend-report extract says NBFC-UL NNPA deterioration at end-March 2025 was primarily associated with lower provisions, while NBFC-ML GNPA improved from 5% to 3.3%. | Treat this as a dated reference and verify the full report and definitions before relying on it. |

| Axis | Required comparison | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Scale and growth | Gross loans or consistently defined AUM, YoY growth, CAGR, disbursements and repayments | Is expansion broad-based and funded without excessive leverage? |
| Vintage and mix | Product, geography, secured share, borrower type, ticket size and months-on-book | Is one company’s low delinquency simply a younger or less risky mix? |
| Yield and NIM | NII, denominator, asset yield, funding cost and repricing profile | Is the spread structural or compensation for risk and funding mismatch? |
| Efficiency | Operating expense, cost-to-income where disclosed and collection cost | Can the platform scale without eroding profit? |
| Credit performance | GNPA, NNPA, slippages, roll rates, recoveries, restructuring and write-offs | Are headline ratios improving because borrowers pay or because problem loans leave the book? |
| Loss protection | PCR, collateral quality and ageing of doubtful assets | How much additional loss can the balance sheet absorb? |
| Funding and liquidity | Bank, bond, commercial-paper and deposit mix; maturity gaps and liquidity buffer | Could a market closure force asset sales or expensive refinancing? |
| Capital | Capital adequacy, risk-weighted assets and internal capital generation | Can growth continue through a stress scenario? |
| Reporting perimeter | Standalone versus consolidated, on-book versus AUM, co-lending and securitisation treatment | Are the two sets of numbers genuinely comparable? |
The better company is not automatically the one with the fastest growth or highest NIM. One may expand rapidly with high yields but rising early delinquencies; another may grow more slowly while maintaining stronger coverage and lower credit cost. The appropriate conclusion is a documented trade-off tied to the reader’s tolerance for volatility and loss.
A repeatable analysis workflow
- Collect primary disclosures. Use the latest annual report, quarterly investor presentation, financial statements and asset-quality annexures. Note the reporting date, regulatory layer and whether figures are consolidated.
- Choose the balance measure. Select gross loans, advances or a precisely defined AUM. Keep that choice consistent through the growth calculation.
- Calculate YoY and CAGR. Show the formula, periods and any annualisation explicitly.
- Reconcile the bridge. Tie opening and closing balances to disbursements, repayments, prepayments, write-offs, securitisations, purchases and acquisitions.
- Split the book. Map product, geography, borrower, ticket, secured status and vintage. Flag concentrations that aggregate ratios can hide.
- Recompute NIM. Use NII divided by the company’s stated average-asset denominator, then document whether the average is simple or daily and whether the period is annualised.
- Build the NIM bridge. Separate asset yield, funding cost, mix, repricing, non-accrual and fees; reconcile the result with operating expense, credit cost and ROA.
- Validate asset-quality ratios. Recalculate GNPA, NNPA and PCR from disclosed amounts, checking the denominator and permitted deductions.
- Inspect leading indicators. Review slippages, 30–60 and 60–90-day roll rates, recoveries, restructuring, write-offs and loan sales.
- Stress the funding plan. Compare maturities, liquidity buffers, capital generation and risk-weighted asset growth with planned loan expansion.
- Compare peers only after normalization. Align dates, perimeter, co-lending, securitisation, NIM definition and regulatory layer before ranking either company.
Red flags that deserve an explanation
- Loan growth materially exceeds internal capital generation without a clear equity, debt or capital-adequacy plan.
- NIM expands while unsecured exposure, early delinquency buckets or collection costs rise.
- GNPA is stable only after unusually heavy write-offs, portfolio sales, restructuring or a denominator change.
- NNPA falls while PCR declines, reducing the provision cushion. The RBI’s 2024–25 extract specifically associated NBFC-UL NNPA deterioration with lower provisions.
- Reported AUM diverges sharply from on-book loans, or co-lent and securitised assets are not clearly identified.
- A region, employer, borrower group or collateral type dominates the portfolio but is obscured by an aggregate ratio.
- Short-term funding dependence or visible maturity gaps could force asset sales during a market disruption.
None of these signals proves that an NBFC is unsafe. Each tells you where to request a reconciliation, a vintage table, a provisioning explanation or a liquidity schedule before relying on the headline growth or margin.
