Do not buy an IT-services stock because revenue or earnings beat estimates for one quarter. First verify where growth came from, how much is recurring, whether margins are improving for durable reasons, and whether accounting earnings convert into cash. Then test management’s guidance against bookings, delivery capacity, risks and a valuation based on sustainable—not peak—profits.
1. Start with the complete quarterly evidence
Use the same document set for every company and every quarter. The earnings release is a useful summary, but the filing and management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A) contain the definitions, segment footnotes and unusual items needed to test it.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Quarterly filing and MD&A: verify revenue recognition, segment results, expenses, cash flow, contract balances, debt, acquisitions, impairments and restructuring charges.
- Earnings release: record reported and adjusted revenue, margins, earnings per share, cash flow and any management-defined operating metrics.
- Investor presentation: capture bookings, backlog, annual recurring revenue (ARR), renewal rates, utilization, headcount and geographic or vertical trends that may not appear in the headline release.
- Earnings-call transcript: compare prepared remarks with analyst questions. Look for specific explanations of demand, sales cycles, pricing, hiring, delivery bottlenecks and customer concentration.
Use the filing to reconcile every non-GAAP number to its GAAP counterpart. Cisco’s quarterly-results disclosures, for example, pair the release with reconciliations, cash-flow information, performance obligations and guidance. Kyndryl’s MD&A illustrates why the formal filing matters: it separates segment performance from workforce-rebalancing charges, impairment, higher selling and administrative expenses, taxes and a divestiture-related gain.

Record at least eight quarters when available. A single year-over-year percentage can hide a recent slowdown, a weak comparison quarter or a currency benefit. Calculate both year-over-year (YoY) and sequential growth, then decompose revenue by the dimensions the company discloses.

| Measure | What to calculate | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | YoY and sequential percentage change | Shows the headline pace and recent direction. |
| Service line | Managed services, maintenance, consulting, systems integration, cloud, support or other disclosed categories | Reveals whether growth is shifting toward durable or lower-quality work. |
| Geography | Revenue and growth by region | Identifies concentration, local economic exposure and currency effects. |
| Customer vertical | Growth in public sector, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing and other disclosed industries | Shows whether one pressured end market is driving the change. |
| Contract type | Recurring, subscription, time-and-materials and fixed-fee work | Helps distinguish repeatable revenue from project timing. |
| Currency | Reported growth versus constant-currency growth | Separates operating performance from exchange-rate movement. |
Kyndryl reports four geographic segments—United States, Japan, Principal Markets and Strategic Markets—showing the level of geographic detail worth seeking. Itron presents reported, foreign-exchange and constant-currency changes; use the same three-way view when a company provides it. If reported growth is 8% but constant-currency growth is 3%, the currency contribution should not be treated as organic demand.
Calculate organic growth separately from acquired growth when management discloses acquisitions. If it does not, flag the limitation rather than assuming the entire increase is organic.
3. Test whether revenue is recurring and visible
Separate revenue that renews automatically or repeatedly from work that must be resold each quarter. Managed services, maintenance, subscriptions and support generally provide more visibility than a one-time systems-integration project, but “recurring” does not mean guaranteed: contracts can be canceled, repriced or reduced.
Use each visibility metric for what it actually measures
| Metric | Definition or implication | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Annual recurring revenue (ARR) | Itron defines ARR as “an annualized calculation of quarterly recurring revenue”; it indicates the ability to attract, retain and expand customers. | It is an annualized run rate, not revenue already recognized for the year and not a promise of renewal. |
| Remaining performance obligations (RPO) | Contracted consideration for work not yet recognized; Cisco reported $46.7 billion in FY2026. | Delivery timing, cancellation rights and margins can vary; RPO is not current-period revenue. |
| Deferred revenue | Cash or billings received before the related service is delivered. | It improves visibility into future recognition but can also reflect billing timing and contract terms. |
| Backlog or bookings | Signed work or orders expected to be delivered. | Bookings may have long delivery periods, termination clauses or low margins. |
For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Itron reported ARR of $417 million. Treat that as the company’s stated quarterly run-rate measure, not as an equivalent to quarterly revenue. Compare ARR growth with recognized recurring revenue, net retention or renewal data when available; a rising ARR accompanied by falling renewals or shrinking margins needs explanation.

4. Explain every material margin change
Track gross margin, operating margin and operating-expense rates both company-wide and by segment. Then build a bridge from the prior quarter or prior year. A margin increase caused by better delivery productivity is more durable than one caused by a temporary reduction in contractors or an unusually favorable project mix.
- Pricing: Are contract renewals incorporating wage inflation, or is the company discounting to win work?
- Mix: Did high-margin software, support or managed services grow faster than labor-intensive projects?
- Utilization: Are billable employees more fully deployed, or is the improvement only a seasonal effect?
- Labor and subcontractors: Check wage inflation, bench costs, offshore mix and reliance on external specialists.
- Productivity: Look for automation, standardized delivery and lower rework rather than vague “efficiency” claims.
- Acquisitions and restructuring: Identify purchase-accounting charges, integration costs, severance and facility exits.
- One-time items: Separate recurring operating performance from impairments, divestiture gains and legal or tax items.
Reconcile GAAP and non-GAAP margins line by line. Cisco reports both measures and provides reconciliations; use those reconciliations to determine whether excluded stock compensation, amortization or restructuring costs are genuinely unusual. Kyndryl’s quarter demonstrates the risk of looking only at adjusted results: workforce-rebalancing charges and impairment affected the net loss, while a divestiture-related gain moved results in the opposite direction.
5. Check whether earnings convert into cash
Compare operating cash flow (OCF) with net income over several quarters, not just the latest period. A rough conversion ratio is OCF divided by net income, but interpret it alongside working-capital movements and noncash charges.

Inspect the working-capital accounts
- Accounts receivable: Receivables growing faster than revenue can indicate slower collections or aggressive billing.
- Contract assets: Revenue recognized before the right to invoice can consume cash until billing milestones are reached.
- Deferred revenue and contract liabilities: Growth can indicate upfront customer payments, improving near-term cash visibility.
- Accounts payable and accrued expenses: A temporary increase can lift OCF without improving underlying profitability.
- Capitalized costs: Capitalized commissions, implementation costs or software development defer expense and can overstate current-period profit.
Dell said OCF in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 was $4.1 billion, driven by revenue growth and profitability but partly offset by working-capital dynamics. That is the level of explanation to seek: identify which balances moved, why they moved and whether the effect is reversible. Cisco reported FY2026 OCF of $14.2 billion; compare that figure with its earnings, capital spending and recurring cash needs rather than treating it as a standalone quality stamp.

6. Read revenue-recognition and contract notes
Services contracts often spread revenue across delivery periods, so bookings, billings, cash and recognized revenue can move at different times. Dell notes that a substantial portion of services revenue is deferred over time, meaning services growth can differ from product growth.
For fixed-fee consulting and systems-integration work, CGI states that revenue is recognized over time using percentage of completion when the contract has no alternative use and the company has an enforceable right to payment for work completed. This judgment makes changes in estimated total costs especially important.
Questions to answer in the notes
- Did management change estimated costs, completion percentages or transaction prices?
- Were loss-making contracts, onerous commitments or provisions recorded?
- Are contract assets, liabilities and receivables increasing faster than revenue?
- What portion of sales is recognized at a point in time versus over time?
- Are goodwill or acquired-intangible balances exposed to impairment?
- How much stock compensation, amortization and capitalized implementation cost is excluded from adjusted earnings?
A sudden improvement in reported margin alongside a favorable estimate change deserves the same scrutiny as a price increase. The objective is not to label an estimate “wrong,” but to understand how much of the quarter depends on management judgment.
7. Assess people, utilization and delivery capacity
An IT-services company sells skilled labor and delivery expertise. Growth can therefore fail even when bookings are strong if the company cannot hire, retain or deploy the required people.

- Track total headcount and billable headcount separately when disclosed.
- Review utilization, bench size and subcontractor spending.
- Compare attrition with hiring and training capacity.
- Ask whether wage inflation is being recovered through pricing.
- Check for delivery delays, quality problems, penalties or project rework.
CGI identifies the ability to hire and retain qualified IT professionals as a factor affecting future cash flows. A company reporting bookings growth but falling utilization may be converting demand into a future delivery obligation it cannot yet execute profitably.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Test guidance against evidence
Place the current-quarter and full-year guidance beside the prior guidance, actual results and the operational indicators that must support it. Cisco’s guidance format includes ranges for revenue, gross margin, operating margin and EPS; use that structure even when another company provides less detail.
| Guidance item | Evidence to test | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | Bookings, RPO, backlog, pipeline conversion, renewals and sales-cycle commentary | Target requires acceleration without stronger orders or shorter sales cycles. |
| Gross margin | Pricing, utilization, wage rates, subcontractor mix and project completion | Margin target rises while labor costs or bench levels worsen. |
| Operating margin | Hiring plans, operating expenses, restructuring and acquisition costs | Growth depends on cutting essential delivery or sales investment. |
| Cash flow | Receivables, contract assets, deferred revenue, payables and capital spending | Profit guidance rises while working capital consumes more cash. |
Record whether management raised, maintained or cut guidance and whether the change reflects organic demand, currency, acquisitions or accounting timing. Cisco warns that demand, competition, technology, acquisitions, cyber incidents, regulation and currency can alter outcomes; those are model assumptions, not boilerplate to ignore.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems9. Stress-test the risks that can break the model
Translate each disclosed risk into a measurable scenario. For example, model a slower client IT-spending environment, a longer sales cycle, a two-point margin decline from wage pressure, or a currency move that removes the reported-growth benefit.
Best Value
- Demand: reduce new bookings and delay project starts.
- Pricing: hold labor costs constant while lowering renewal prices.
- Customer concentration: remove or delay the largest customer contract.
- Currency: use constant-currency growth as the base case and reported growth as a sensitivity.
- Cyber and regulation: include remediation cost, downtime, penalties or delayed government work where relevant.
- Acquisitions: test integration costs, retention payments, debt and goodwill impairment.
- Technology shifts: examine whether automation changes the number of billable hours or the price customers will pay.
CGI specifically flags sales-cycle length, technology trends, hiring and retention, and goodwill-impairment assumptions. A risk belongs in the model only after you identify its effect on revenue, margin, cash flow or the balance sheet.
10. Recalculate valuation after the quarter
Update the market capitalization using the current share price and diluted shares. Add debt and subtract cash to calculate enterprise value (EV). Then recalculate forward price-to-earnings, EV-to-EBIT, EV-to-EBITDA and free-cash-flow yield using assumptions that reflect the quarter’s evidence.
Compare the company with its own history and a consistent peer set. Keep accounting definitions consistent: do not compare one company’s adjusted EBITDA with another’s GAAP operating income without reconciling the exclusions. A higher multiple can be justified by faster organic growth, more recurring revenue, stronger margins, better cash conversion and a safer balance sheet; it is not justified by a one-quarter beat alone.

11. Use a repeatable buy-or-wait workflow
- Download the latest filing, MD&A, release, presentation and transcript.
- Enter eight quarters of revenue, margins, OCF, capital spending, headcount and disclosed visibility metrics into one worksheet.
- Calculate YoY, sequential, organic and constant-currency growth.
- Classify revenue by recurring versus project-based work and document each metric’s definition.
- Build a margin bridge that identifies mix, pricing, utilization, labor, subcontractors and one-time items.
- Reconcile net income to OCF and explain every major working-capital movement.
- Read contract and accounting notes for estimate changes, loss contracts, deferred revenue, contract assets and goodwill.
- Compare guidance with bookings, RPO, pipeline, utilization, margins and cash-flow requirements.
- Run downside cases for demand, price, currency, delivery capacity and impairment.
- Recalculate valuation and write a one-sentence decision: buy only if the price compensates for the risks your model still cannot resolve; otherwise wait for evidence in a later quarter.
12. A two-company comparison scorecard
When choosing between IT-services companies, score both on the same definitions and period. The useful axes are:
- Organic and constant-currency growth
- Recurring-revenue, backlog and RPO visibility
- Gross and operating margins, including the quality of adjustments
- Utilization, attrition and subcontractor dependence
- Operating-cash-flow conversion and working-capital discipline
- Customer and geographic concentration
- Net debt, maturities and balance-sheet flexibility
- Historical guidance accuracy
- Accounting complexity and estimate sensitivity
- Valuation relative to sustainable growth and cash generation
The company with the higher score is not automatically the better stock. Use the scorecard to expose trade-offs—for example, a slower grower with exceptionally stable cash flow versus a faster grower whose results depend on project timing and aggressive hiring.
