To enable location access, turn on your phone’s system Location Services, then allow access for the VR companion app if it appears in the app’s location settings. For an app running inside a Meta Quest headset, the permission is separate: the app must request location access from the headset. The exact steps depend on your phone and headset; the verified phone instructions below are for iPhone and iPad.
Enable location for a VR companion app on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
- Turn on Location Services if it is off.
- Find and tap the VR companion app, then choose an access option shown for it.
The options available depend on what the app requests and what iOS or iPadOS offers; not every app will show the same choices. You can change the setting later in the same location. Apple explains that apps must ask for permission before they can use Location Services, and that with system Location Services turned off, apps cannot use that service in the foreground or background: Apple’s overview of privacy and Location Services.

If the app is not listed
An app appears in the location settings flow after it requests permission. If the VR companion app has never asked, there may be no app-specific setting to change yet. Apple’s guidance establishes the permission flow, but does not provide a remedy for an app that never prompts; consult that app’s official support instructions for its own setup process.

Allowing location for a companion app on your phone does not grant location access to an app running inside the headset. Phone permissions are managed by the phone’s operating system. A Quest app running on the headset must request its own runtime permission.

Meta’s developer documentation says Quest’s Location API is for foreground access, not background location access. Quest headsets do not have GPS; this API uses Wi-Fi geolocation instead. It is therefore inaccurate to describe the feature as GPS tracking or to assume that a headset app can keep accessing location in the background. See Meta’s Location API documentation.
What the Meta Quest location requirements establish
Meta lists Quest 2, Quest Pro, and Quest 3 for the VR Location API and specifies Horizon OS v57 or later. Its October 26, 2023 announcement says those headsets began supporting Android Location Manager API with OS v57. These are requirements for the headset API; they do not establish that every app uses location or that the phone companion app has the same requirements.

Meta’s documentation is written for developers and explains how an app requests access. It does not verify a current consumer-facing menu path for enabling location in Quest headset settings. For that reason, use the headset’s current official support guidance for the exact settings route rather than relying on a guessed menu sequence. Do not confuse location permission with spatial-data permission
Quest spatial-data access is a separate permission used for Scene Model or Depth data; it is not the Location API permission. Meta’s spatial-data documentation, updated April 14, 2026, lists Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, and Quest 3S for that permission. That list does not show that Quest 3S supports the separate Location API. See Meta’s Spatial Data Permission documentation.

Choose the narrowest access that supports the feature
- Check the device: Decide whether the request is for the phone app or an app running on the headset.
- Check the scope: A system-wide location switch and a per-app permission are separate controls on iPhone and iPad.
- Check the duration: Where iOS offers a choice such as while using the app, consider whether that is enough for the feature you are using.
- Check the reason: Grant only the access needed for the app’s stated function. Meta instructs developers to request the minimum location permission their Quest app needs.
