A console cable gives you local command-line access to configure a switch; it does not assign the IP address by itself. First identify the switch model and choose whether its management address belongs on a dedicated out-of-band interface or an in-band management VLAN. Then connect with the model’s supported console cable, configure the appropriate interface, save the settings, and verify the network path.
Before you connect, identify the switch and plan its management address
Console connectors, cable pinouts, terminal settings, interface names, and command syntax vary by model and software release. The steps below use Cisco Catalyst documentation as a platform-specific example, not a universal command recipe. Check the current documentation for your exact switch before entering commands.

Have the following ready before setup:
- The management IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway assigned by your network plan.
- The management path you intend to use: a dedicated out-of-band interface, if supported and available, or an in-band management VLAN.
- Required administrative credentials and the switch’s exact model and software release.
- A console cable compatible with the switch’s labeled console port and the ports available on your computer.
Choose the management path
A management address works only when the chosen interface and its network path are configured correctly. The Catalyst 3850/3650 best-practices guide distinguishes out-of-band management from in-band management and recommends out-of-band where available. Its guidance dates to December 1, 2015, so confirm details against current documentation for your platform.

|---|---|---|
| Out-of-band | On the covered Catalyst 3850/3650 platforms, the dedicated GigabitEthernet 0/0 service port connects to a separate management network rather than the internal switching data plane. | Confirm that your model has this service interface, connect it to the separate management network, and account for its management VRF and the default route required in that VRF. |
| In-band | A VLAN interface (SVI) carries management traffic through the production network. | Use a dedicated management VLAN rather than VLAN 1. The VLAN must exist, and at least one associated physical port must be forwarding for the VLAN interface address to be operational. |
The separate management network can provide a path distinct from production traffic, but it brings routing-context requirements. In-band management uses the production network and depends on the management VLAN and its forwarding ports. Choose based on your network design and the switch’s supported interfaces; do not assume every switch has a GigabitEthernet 0/0 service port or that a particular VLAN number is appropriate. Cisco’s platform-specific guidance also notes that some functions use the in-band address even when out-of-band management is configured.
#1 Best Overall
- PLUG-AND-PLAY GIGABIT MANAGED SWITCH: 8 x 1Gbps auto-negotiating ports work the moment you plug in — full-gigabit speed over Cat5e/Cat6 cabling.
- MANAGED, WITHOUT THE COMPLEXITY: Easy Smart web GUI on Windows, Mac or Linux — no app or Windows-only utility, unlike many competing switches.
- SEGMENT & PRIORITIZE TRAFFIC: Up to 64 VLANs, QoS, IGMP snooping and port mirroring keep voice, video and data fast, secure and organized.
- BUILT-IN PROTECTION: Auto DoS prevention, loop detection, broadcast storm control and cable test keep your network stable and easy to troubleshoot.
- RELIABLE 24/7 BACKBONE: Rugged fanless metal housing runs cool and silent at 0 dBA — the managed switch trusted in homes, offices and small business.
Connect the console cable and open the CLI
For the Catalyst 3850 RJ-45 console procedure, Cisco documents connecting a PC’s 9-pin serial port to the switch’s console port with the specified RJ-45-to-DB-9 adapter cable. Its documented terminal settings are 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control. Those defaults apply to that procedure; verify the settings for other models.
- Check the switch’s console label and documentation. Match the console connector and cable to the computer’s available ports; do not confuse a USB Type-A storage port with a USB console port.
- Connect the compatible RJ-45 console cable and adapter, or use the switch’s supported USB console connection. On the Catalyst 3850, the USB option requires the appropriate USB console cable and, for a first connection from a Windows PC, a Cisco USB console driver.
- Start terminal-emulation software and select the serial connection. For the cited Catalyst 3850 procedure, set 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control.
- Power on the switch and press Enter when the boot sequence is displayed to reach the setup prompt. If the prompt does not appear, confirm that you selected the correct computer port and that the cable and terminal settings match the switch documentation.
Configure the management address for the selected interface
Use the setup program or CLI procedure documented for your model and software release. The Catalyst 3850 setup documentation lists the switch IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, enable secret, enable password, and Telnet password among the inputs to prepare. Follow your organization’s credential and remote-access policy; do not enable insecure remote administration simply because an older setup workflow lists a Telnet password.

- GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
- EASY SMART MANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Intuitive software interface offers Easy Smart Managed Essentials capabilities to configure VLANs, prioritize traffic with QoS, monitor ports, and manage network security for small businesses.
- FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
- SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
- REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
For in-band management, configure the address on the management VLAN interface specified by your network plan, create that VLAN if needed, and ensure an associated physical port is forwarding. For out-of-band management, configure the supported service interface and its management routing context as documented for the switch. No single command sequence applies to all switch models: interface names, VLAN IDs, routing contexts, and command syntax differ.
Save the configuration and verify reachability
- Use the save command documented for your switch. Cisco’s Catalyst 3850 CLI-based setup guide specifies
write memoryto save the entered configuration to flash memory. - Review the active configuration with the platform’s supported command. Cisco’s Catalyst 3850/3650 best-practices guide identifies
show running-configurationfor displaying initial management information. - From a host that has an appropriate network path, test access to the configured management address. A host on the same subnet is a useful first check; access from another subnet also depends on correct gateway and routing configuration.
A configured address is not proof that management access is reachable. Check that the address, mask, gateway, and selected interface match the network plan. For in-band access, confirm that the management VLAN exists and an associated physical port is forwarding. For out-of-band access, verify that the computer is connected to the separate management network and that traffic uses the correct routing context.

If the management address does not respond
- No CLI prompt: Verify the selected console port, cable compatibility, serial-port selection, and terminal settings. If using USB console on the cited Catalyst 3850 from Windows for the first time, check that the required Cisco driver is installed.
- In-band address is not operational: Confirm the VLAN was created and that at least one member port is in a forwarding state. Check the VLAN interface’s address and mask against the network plan.
- Out-of-band address is unreachable: Confirm that the model supports the configured service interface, that it is connected to the separate management network, and that the management VRF has the required route.
- Host cannot reach the switch: Check link indication, the host’s network connectivity, the address entered, and whether the host is on the same subnet or has a valid routed path. Cisco’s Catalyst 3750-X/3560-X getting-started material includes these checks for device-manager access.
These checks follow Cisco documentation for specific Catalyst families; use your model’s current official guide when labels, commands, or behavior differ.
