How to Allow an App Through Windows Defender Firewall in Windows 10

Use Windows Security’s allowed-app list to let a trusted program through Windows 10 Firewall without turning the firewall off.

To allow an app through Windows Defender Firewall in Windows 10, open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall. Select Change settings, then check the box beside the app. If it is not listed, use Allow another app to browse to its program file. You may need administrator approval.

Allow an app through the firewall

  1. Open the Windows Security app.
  2. Select Firewall & network protection, then choose Allow an app through firewall.
  3. Select Change settings. If Windows prompts you, provide administrator credentials or confirm the change.
  4. Find the app in the list and check the box beside its name. If it is not listed, select Allow another app, then browse to or enter the path to its program file.
  5. Select OK to apply the change.

To remove an exception later, return to the allowed-app list, clear the app’s checkbox, and select OK. Microsoft’s procedure applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11; labels may vary slightly by version or language. Microsoft’s instructions for allowing or removing an app provide the official steps.

Choose an app exception rather than opening a port

Microsoft says it is generally safer to add an app to the allowed list than to open a port. An app exception allows the required ports to open when needed; an opened port remains open until you close it. Allow only apps you recognize and need, and remove exceptions you no longer use. Microsoft explains the risks of allowing apps through Windows Firewall.

If the app still cannot connect

  • Check the network profile and firewall controls. Windows distinguishes domain, private, and public network profiles; public networks are generally less trusted. The option Blocks all incoming connections, including those in the list of allowed apps overrides the allowed-app list, so an app exception will not work while that control is active. See Microsoft’s Firewall and Network Protection guidance.
  • Check whether the device is managed. Organization policy can prevent changes to firewall settings. If the controls are unavailable or the change is blocked on a work or school device, contact the administrator.
  • Confirm that you selected the correct program. If adding the app manually, browse to the program file for the app you intend to allow. Do not create an exception for software you do not recognize.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Since that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. See Microsoft’s Windows support information.
