A PSD can look different as a PNG when Photoshop converts its color profile, changes export dimensions or resampling, or handles transparency and bit depth differently. The PNG viewer can also interpret color profiles or transparency differently from Photoshop. Check the export settings and compare both files in a color-managed viewer before changing the artwork.
Why can colors change when you export a PSD as PNG?
RGB values need a color profile to describe how they should appear. Photoshop uses profiles to interpret and translate colors between color spaces and devices; without consistent color management, one image can look different in different applications or on different displays. See Adobe’s color management guidance.

Converting to sRGB can change the RGB values
For web output, Adobe recommends sRGB IEC61966-2.1 and converting an image to that profile before saving it in a web format. A conversion changes the color values so the image can retain its appearance as closely as possible in the destination space. Colors outside the destination profile’s gamut may be translated, so the result may not match the source numbers exactly. See Adobe’s online-viewing guidance.

In Photoshop, assigning a profile and converting to one are not interchangeable. Assigning changes how Photoshop interprets the existing values without changing them; converting changes the values to represent the colors in the destination profile. Adobe warns that assigning a profile can significantly alter the on-screen appearance. See Change color profiles in Photoshop.

An embedded or missing profile changes how apps read the PNG
When a profile is embedded, a compatible application can use it to interpret the image’s colors. If a profile is omitted or a viewer ignores it, identical RGB values may appear different because the viewer lacks that context. Adobe explains profile embedding in Embed color profiles in Photoshop.
Can Export As change the PNG’s size or edges?
Yes. Photoshop’s Export As settings include scale, resampling, canvas size, clipping, and canvas-fill behavior. A different scale or resampling method can change sharpness, fine detail, and tonal transitions. A changed canvas bound can cut off artwork or add extra area filled with transparency, white, or an indexed-color swatch, depending on the settings and format. Adobe documents these controls in Export settings and preferences in Photoshop.

How do transparency and bit depth affect the result?
Transparency can look different depending on the background used to display the PNG. An edge that appears clean over one background may show a fringe over another, so inspect it over a known background in a color-managed application. Export As also exposes separate transparency and smaller-file options: Adobe’s guide, last updated February 23, 2026, says that Transparency generates 32-bit assets, Smaller File generates 8-bit assets, and with both deselected Photoshop generates 24-bit assets. These are export settings, not a guarantee that a PNG will preserve every characteristic of the PSD’s editing workflow. See Adobe’s export guide.

If the PSD uses a 32-bit workflow, PNG is not an equivalent editable master. Keep the layered PSD to preserve layers, effects, and masks; consult Adobe’s Photoshop file-format overview.

How to diagnose a PSD-to-PNG mismatch in Photoshop
- Check the PSD profile. Look at the document profile in Photoshop’s document information area and note the source profile.
- Choose a destination profile for web use. If the PNG is intended for web viewing, use Edit > Convert to Profile and select sRGB IEC61966-2.1. Review the conversion preview. Adobe’s documented workflow specifies Adobe (ACE), Relative Colorimetric intent, and Black Point Compensation. See Adobe’s online-viewing guidance.
- Review Export As color settings. Open File > Export > Export As. Check whether Convert to sRGB and profile embedding are selected, and confirm that those choices match your intended output. The available controls are described in Adobe’s Export As guide.
- Verify geometry and fill. In Export As, compare dimensions and scale, inspect the resampling choice, and check canvas bounds, clipping, and canvas fill.
- Inspect transparency and file-size options. Confirm the Transparency and Smaller File choices, then view the PNG over a known background to check for edge halos or an unexpected fill.
- Compare in more than one viewer. Open the PSD and PNG in Photoshop, then compare the PNG in another color-managed application. If the mismatch appears only outside Photoshop, profile handling or display differences may be involved; avoid compensating by changing source colors until you have checked those factors.
What to compare before changing the artwork
| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Color profile | Source PSD profile, destination profile, and whether the PNG has an embedded profile. |
| Color conversion | Whether Export As converts to sRGB and whether the conversion is appropriate for the intended use. |
| Dimensions | PNG width and height, export scale, and resampling method. |
| Canvas | Canvas bounds, clipping, and the fill or transparency of any extra area. |
| Transparency and depth | Transparency and Smaller File settings, and whether the PSD relies on a 32-bit workflow. |
| Viewing conditions | Application profile handling, monitor calibration, and the background behind transparent pixels. |
Adobe notes that application interpretation, monitor calibration, and device characteristics all affect color appearance. Keep the PSD as the editable master; PNG is an export, not a substitute for a layered document.
