Save or sync the map before you leave coverage, then confirm it is stored on the watch if you expect to leave your phone behind. Offline map viewing, turn-by-turn guidance, and phone-free routing are different capabilities: what works depends on your watch, software version, region, and travel mode.
Check what “offline maps” can do on your watch
A downloaded map may let you view an area without a connection, but that does not automatically mean the watch can calculate a route or provide turn-by-turn directions on its own. Check the platform-specific limits below, and verify the map is available on the watch before departure.

Download offline maps to Apple Watch
Apple’s offline-map availability varies by country or region. In supported areas, Apple Maps can provide place-card information and turn-by-turn directions for hiking, driving, walking, cycling, or transit, subject to regional availability.
- Save an area or hiking route: Open Maps on the paired iPhone, tap your profile picture or initials, then tap Offline Maps. Save the map area or route you need.
- Enable watch sync: In the iPhone’s Offline Maps settings, turn on Sync with Apple Watch.
- Confirm it is on the watch: On Apple Watch, open Maps, tap the search button, tap your profile picture or initials, and choose Offline Maps. Select the map and check its availability label.
“On This Watch” means the map is available on the watch when the iPhone is away. “On Your iPhone” means the phone must be nearby. Apple says maps are automatically available when the iPhone is on and within Bluetooth range—about 33 feet or 10 meters—but sync the map if you need it without the phone. See Apple’s instructions for using offline maps on Apple Watch.

Download and use Google Maps on Wear OS
Google’s instructions apply to Wear OS 3 and later. On Wear OS 2, turn-by-turn directions are available only in Google Maps on the paired phone.
Prepare maps and start navigation
- Install or open Google Maps on the watch.
- Search for a place or choose a recent destination, then select a travel mode. Google documents navigation for cycling, driving, and walking.
- Turn on Maps notifications so navigation can remain active.
- Pan or zoom the map on the watch as needed. The button on the right side of the watch switches map orientation.
Google’s Wear OS support page says a watch can start navigation without the phone nearby using offline maps for driving directions only. With LTE, its stated phone-free navigation options include driving, walking, and cycling. Public transport directions do not have turn-by-turn voice and haptics.

Verify the offline area and manage battery use
Google says maps downloaded to the phone can also be accessed on the watch, and its Wear OS product page describes manual downloads from offline-map settings in the watch’s Maps app. Exact behavior can differ by watch version and rollout, so check the watch’s own Offline Maps screen and confirm the desired area is available there before leaving. Google warns that turning off Show on phone for a faster update rate, or using watch-sourced audio guidance, consumes watch battery more quickly. Power-saving mode can also interfere with Maps. Navigation options and battery effects therefore depend on the settings you choose and the connection available.

Garmin map support and menus are model-specific. The steps here apply to the Forerunner 965 and Venu X1 manuals cited below; do not assume the same path exists on another Garmin watch. Both manuals say downloads are queued to prevent battery drain and start when the watch is connected to external power.

Quick Recap
Before leaving coverage
- Save or download the map while you still have a connection.
- Check the map on the watch itself. On Apple Watch, distinguish On This Watch from On Your iPhone.
- Confirm your planned travel mode works phone-free on your platform; map display and offline routing are not the same thing.
- Check your watch model and software version, and make sure any queued Garmin download has completed.
- Consider battery impact, especially if you use watch-sourced audio guidance or faster map updates on Wear OS.
