In Minecraft Java Edition, allocate memory by editing the installation’s JVM arguments: open the official launcher’s Installations tab, choose Edit from the profile’s three-dot menu, open More Options, and change the -Xmx value (for example, -Xmx2G to -Xmx4G). Bedrock Edition has no confirmed manual RAM control, so its practical fixes are closing other applications and reducing demanding video settings. Make a copy of your existing arguments before changing anything.

What “allocating more RAM” actually changes
Minecraft Java Edition runs inside a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). The launcher starts that JVM with memory arguments that define how large Minecraft’s heap may become. The setting changes the amount of system RAM available to the Java game process; it does not add physical RAM to your computer and it cannot compensate for a slow CPU, a weak graphics processor, a busy disk, a poor network connection or a faulty mod.

Two flags matter:
-Xmsis the heap’s initial size when the game starts.-Xmxis the heap’s maximum size. For example,-Xmx4Gpermits a maximum heap of 4 gigabytes.
The suffix can be K for kilobytes, M for megabytes or G for gigabytes. In normal desktop installations, a value such as 4G is easier to read and maintain than an equivalent value in megabytes.
Bedrock Edition uses a different runtime and launcher model. No primary Mojang documentation confirming a user-facing RAM slider or an -Xmx-equivalent for the Bedrock client was found. Treat claims that you can manually assign a fixed amount to Bedrock as unverified rather than as an official feature.

Before changing Java memory
- Back up worlds. Copy important single-player saves before changing advanced launcher settings or installing a large modpack.
- Record the current arguments. Copy the entire JVM Arguments field into a text file. If a change prevents the game from starting, you can restore the original line.
- Check available system RAM. The operating system, browser, voice chat, recording software and other games need memory too. Giving Minecraft nearly all of the installed RAM can make the computer swap to disk and feel slower.
- Close the game and launcher profile editor. Edit the profile before starting Minecraft so the next launch uses the new value.
Allocating more memory is most useful for large modpacks, high-resolution resource packs, many loaded chunks and situations where the Java process repeatedly runs out of heap. It is not automatically a cure for every form of lag.
Official Minecraft Launcher: increase Java Edition RAM
- Open the official Minecraft Launcher and select Java Edition.
- Open the Installations tab.
- Find the profile you actually launch. Select its three-dot menu and choose Edit.
- Enable More Options. On launcher versions that hide advanced controls, this may require enabling an Advanced Settings option first.
- Locate JVM Arguments. The line commonly begins with a value such as
-Xmx2G. - Change only the number and unit in the
-Xmxportion. For example, replace-Xmx2Gwith-Xmx4G. Leave the other arguments intact unless you know exactly what they do. - Save the installation, then launch that same profile.
Changing -Xmx raises the ceiling; it does not force Minecraft to consume that amount immediately. The JVM can use less and grow the heap as the game needs it. Unless you have a specific reason to tune startup behavior, leave -Xms unchanged. If you do change it, remember that -Xms is the initial heap and -Xmx remains the maximum.
Example JVM argument edit
Suppose the field contains an argument beginning with -Xmx2G. Change that token to -Xmx4G and preserve the spaces and every other token around it. Do not paste a second, conflicting -Xmx value elsewhere in the line. Keep the original text in your backup so you can reverse the edit.

Other Java launchers
Third-party launchers expose the same basic Java heap controls in different places. The profile-level setting can override a global value, so confirm that you are editing the profile used for the modpack or instance that lags.

The labels and layout of third-party launchers can change with updates. If a slider is unavailable, look for the instance’s Java, memory or advanced settings rather than adding random JVM flags to a global configuration.
How much RAM should Java Edition get?
There is no authoritative Mojang number that fits every computer, world and modpack. Secondary recommendations conflict: one commonly repeated rule is to allocate no more than half of total system RAM; another suggests an upper limit of 8 GB; another describes 4 GB as a vanilla-play sweet spot. These are rules of thumb, not official requirements.

A practical method is to make one moderate increase, play the same world or modpack, and watch whether crashes or memory-pressure symptoms stop. If nothing changes, return to the previous value and investigate other causes instead of continuing to raise the ceiling. Increasing the limit beyond what the workload needs can increase garbage-collection pauses or leave too little RAM for the rest of the system.
What about the reported Java 26.1 default?
One secondary report says a Java 26.1 release in March 2026 changed the default allocation from 2 GB to 4 GB. The existence of a Java Edition 26.1 reference page does not, by itself, verify that release-note wording, and no primary Mojang statement confirming the change was established. Check the value shown in your own launcher profile instead of assuming a particular default.
Bedrock Edition: what you can and cannot change
No confirmed Bedrock client control equivalent to Java’s -Xmx field was established. Bedrock’s memory use is managed by the application and platform, so a Java-style command-line edit is not a supported, verified solution for the client.

Reduce competing memory use
- Close browsers with many tabs, screen recorders, editors, virtual machines and other games before launching Bedrock.
- Open the operating system’s Task Manager or equivalent process monitor and check whether another program is consuming most of the available memory.
- Restart the computer if a long-running session has left background processes or the system under memory pressure.
Reduce the workload Bedrock has to render
- Lower render distance and simulation distance.
- Reduce resource-pack or graphics settings that increase the amount of content held and rendered at once.
- Test the same world with add-ons or high-resolution packs disabled to determine whether one of them is responsible.
Raising Bedrock’s process priority is sometimes suggested in low-quality guides. It is not a confirmed memory-allocation fix and can make the system less responsive or unstable; it should not be treated as a routine recommendation.

Client versus self-hosted Java server
A Java client’s memory is controlled by its launcher profile. A self-hosted Java server is started from a command line or script, so its heap flags belong in the server start command instead.
A commonly documented pattern is:
java -Xms6G -Xmx6G -jar server.jar noguiThis example uses equal initial and maximum values, a practice many server guides describe, but the exact command and suitable amount depend on the server software, installed mods, player count and available RAM. The example has not been independently confirmed against the official Minecraft server tutorial here; do not copy the numbers blindly. Replace server.jar with the actual file name and leave enough memory for the operating system and any other services on the machine.
For a server, -Xms6G sets the initial heap and -Xmx6G sets the maximum. For a client, place the equivalent setting in the launcher profile rather than in a server script.
When more RAM does not fix Minecraft lag
Lag has several meanings. Low frame rate is usually a rendering or graphics bottleneck; delayed block updates can be network or server related; pauses followed by a crash can involve memory. More heap helps only when Java is genuinely constrained by its current maximum.

- Only one modpack crashes: check that pack’s documented requirements and isolate recently added mods or resource packs.
- The whole computer becomes sluggish: reduce Minecraft’s allocation and close competing applications; the operating system may be paging because too little RAM remains available.
- Online play is delayed while local frame rate is normal: investigate server performance, connection quality and latency rather than increasing the client heap.
- World loading causes brief pauses: test a modestly higher
-Xmx, but compare the result with the original setting and keep the change only if it improves the actual symptom.
Troubleshooting a Java allocation that appears not to work
The game will not start after editing
- Return to the profile’s JVM Arguments field.
- Restore the backed-up line exactly.
- Check for a typo such as a missing hyphen, an invalid suffix or two conflicting
-Xmxarguments. - Save and launch the profile again. If it starts, make one smaller change rather than reapplying the full edit.
The slider or argument seems ignored
- Confirm that you launched the same installation or modpack profile you edited.
- Check whether a profile-level override is enabled in the third-party launcher.
- Look for another launcher or script that starts Minecraft with its own Java settings.
- Verify which Java runtime the launcher is using and whether it is a 64-bit runtime. Reports that a 32-bit JVM is limited to roughly 1.5–2 GB are not traced here to a primary source, so treat that figure as unverified; nevertheless, an incompatible runtime can prevent a requested value from being usable.
The computer slows down after increasing memory
Lower -Xmx in steps until the operating system remains responsive, then close unnecessary applications and retest. A larger maximum is not beneficial if it forces the computer to use disk-based virtual memory.
The change helped briefly but crashes continue
Check the modpack’s own requirements, remove or update recently changed content, and test a clean profile. Keep the original arguments and world backup so you can return to a known-good configuration.
