Adjust Satisfactory server settings in the right place for the setting you want to change. Use the in-game Server Manager for server identity, passwords, pausing, loading, restart and network-quality controls; edit Game.ini for values such as the player cap; and use startup flags for ports and launch-time overrides. Stop the server before editing files, and make a graceful shutdown first so Satisfactory writes its configuration instead of replacing your changes.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Satisfactory servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Which Satisfactory settings belong where?
Satisfactory does not keep every dedicated-server option in one editable file. The practical rule is to identify the setting first, then use its supported control surface.

The Server Manager values are stored in a binary file named ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav. The official wiki identifies the Server Manager as the supported way to modify that file; do not attempt to edit it as if it were an INI document.
Prepare the server before changing configuration
Identify the installation and operating system
On Linux, the dedicated server configuration directory is FactoryGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/. On Windows, it is FactoryGameSavedConfigWindowsServer. The executable launcher for a Linux installation is ./FactoryServer.sh, run from the server’s install directory. Windows installations use the corresponding server executable or shortcut supplied with that installation.

- [Games need exclusions and runtimes, not malware]Some customers ask why our retro game drives can trigger Windows Security warnings. Many game files are older DLLs that Windows Defender sometimes flags as threats. They are not viruses or malware—just old or uncommon code causing false positives. We temporarily add them to the exclusion list so they aren't blocked, then re-enable Security to keep your PC protected. Many classic games also need legacy VC++ and DirectX runtimes, which modern Windows doesn't include by default. Installing them ensures compatibility and smooth play. Your safety matters to us—these are safe, standard steps for retro games.

Make a recoverable copy
Copy the entire FactoryGame/Saved directory, or at minimum the configuration and save directories, while the server is stopped. Give each backup a date and keep the original file names. A backup lets you restore a known-good configuration after a syntax mistake or an unwanted automatic rewrite.
Perform a graceful shutdown
Configuration files may not exist until the server has completed at least one graceful shutdown. Satisfactory writes files during a clean shutdown, so an edit made while the process is still running can be overwritten when the process exits. Stop the server cleanly, wait for the process to finish, and only then open an INI file. If you use a service manager, send its normal stop action rather than terminating the process.
Change one class of setting at a time
Separate Server Manager changes, INI edits and command-line changes. Record the old value and the new value in an administrator note. This makes it possible to tell whether a failed connection, a reset value or a performance change came from the configuration you just touched.
Use Server Manager for supported server options
Open the Satisfactory Server Manager, select the server you administer and use its settings controls rather than searching for a text file. The manager is the supported interface for the binary server-settings save. Depending on the game build, labels can move slightly, but the relevant controls cover the following behavior.
Server identity and access
- Server name: changes the name players see when locating the server.
- Password: protects the session from players who do not know the configured password. Test the new password from a separate client before announcing it.
A password change does not change the player cap or network ports. Treat those as separate settings and verify them independently.
Pausing and loading behavior
- Auto-pause: controls whether the simulation pauses when nobody is connected. It is useful for worlds where production should not advance while unattended, but it also means automated production will not progress during an empty session.
- Auto-save on disconnect: requests a save when a player disconnects, reducing the interval during which recent work can be lost after the last scheduled save.
- Auto-load session: controls whether the server loads its previous session automatically during startup instead of waiting for an administrator to select one.
Choose these as a group. For example, a private world that is normally empty may benefit from auto-pause and auto-load, while a continuously running factory may need auto-pause disabled so production continues between player visits.
Restart and network-quality controls
Server Manager also exposes a restart hour and a network-quality setting. Schedule a restart hour during the quietest local period, then tell players when the world may be unavailable. Network quality should reflect the connections your players actually have; raising a quality setting cannot fix a saturated upload link or a blocked port.
Why the binary file should not be edited manually
The file ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav is not a human-readable INI. Editing bytes directly can corrupt the server’s settings and is outside the supported workflow. If a manager setting appears not to stick, stop the server cleanly, reopen Server Manager, apply the value there and start the server again.

Change the autosave interval
Autosaves can be changed from Server Manager, and the running server also accepts the console command FG.AutosaveInterval followed by a number of seconds. The documented default is 300 seconds, or five minutes. The official Settings documentation expresses the same control in minutes: a range of 0 to 120, a default of 5, and three rotating autosave slots. A value of 0 disables scheduled autosaves.
Using the Server Manager console
- Open Server Manager and select the target server.
- Open the Console tab.
- Enter
FG.AutosaveIntervalfollowed by the desired number of seconds. For example,FG.AutosaveInterval 600requests a ten-minute interval. - Submit the command and watch the console for an error or confirmation.
- Allow a save cycle to occur, then check the world before making additional changes.
Use seconds in the console command even though the settings page displays minutes. For a five-minute interval, enter 300; for 15 minutes, enter 900. Keep the unit in your administrator notes so a later change is not made with minutes where seconds are required.

Choose an interval that matches the workload
Shorter intervals reduce the maximum amount of progress lost after a crash, but saving can cause a performance drop while the save is being written. A busy factory with many machines and containers may make that pause more noticeable than a small early-game world. Longer intervals reduce save activity but increase potential data loss. Disabling autosaves removes the scheduled protection entirely and should be reserved for a deliberate operational plan with another reliable save process.
Autosaves rotate across three slots according to the official Settings documentation. Rotation provides several recent restore points, but it is not a substitute for dated backups of the world files.
Raise or lower the maximum player count
The player cap is stored in Game.ini, not in the Server Manager’s binary settings file. The relevant section is [/Script/Engine.GameSession], and the key is MaxPlayers. The official wiki documents a default of 4 and uses MaxPlayers=8 as an example.
Edit Game.ini on a stopped server
- Stop the dedicated server gracefully.
- Open the configuration directory for your operating system:
FactoryGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/on Linux orFactoryGameSavedConfigWindowsServeron Windows. - Open
Game.iniin a plain-text editor. If it is missing, start and then gracefully stop the server once so Satisfactory can create its configuration files. - Find the section header
[/Script/Engine.GameSession]. Add it if it is absent. - Under that header, add or replace the line
MaxPlayers=8, changing 8 to the cap you intend to use. - Save the file as plain text, preserving the
.iniextension and the exact section spelling. - Start the server and test with more than four players if you raised the cap.
Do not create duplicate MaxPlayers lines in several sections. Keep one value under the correct section so that the loaded configuration is unambiguous.
Use a startup override instead
You can set the same value without editing the file by adding this startup argument:
-ini:Game:[/Script/Engine.GameSession]:MaxPlayers=8

Place it with the other arguments used to launch the server. The override is useful for a temporary event or for a managed service where launch arguments are version-controlled. Remove the argument when you want the file’s value to take effect again.
Understand the player-cap trade-off
The server is tuned for the default cap of four. The official wiki warns that raising the cap can affect stability, performance and resource use. That warning is not a promise that eight players will fail; it means the result depends on the world, factory complexity, network conditions and server hardware. Increase the cap in small steps, monitor server logs and player latency, and have a recent save backup before inviting a larger group.

Startup flags are applied when the server process starts. They are appropriate for values that must be known before the world loads or that are easier to maintain in a service definition.
| Flag | Function | Documented default or qualification |
|---|---|---|
-Port= |
Sets the main server port. | Default 7777. If that port is busy, the next higher port is tried. |
-ReliablePort= |
Sets the reliable messaging port. | Default 8888. |
-ExternalReliablePort= |
Controls the externally advertised reliable messaging port when your network layout requires a distinct value. | Use only when your forwarding or hosting arrangement needs it. |
-Unattended |
Prevents dialogs from interrupting the server process. | Enabled by default on Linux according to the dedicated-server documentation. |
-Log |
Displays logs in the terminal on Linux. | Useful while diagnosing startup and connection problems. |
-ini:<FILE>:[<SECTION>]:<KEY>=<VALUE> |
Overrides an INI value at launch. | Use the exact file, section and key syntax. |
Example Linux launch
From the installation directory, a Linux launch can include the launcher and the required flags, for example:
./FactoryServer.sh -Port=7777 -ReliablePort=8888 -Unattended -Log
Use the ports that your firewall and router forward. If you change a port, players must use the new reachable endpoint, and any firewall rule or service definition must be updated to match.

How port sharing affects Update 8 and later installations
Since Update 8, game traffic, the query service and the HTTPS API share the main port. A firewall rule that permits the main port therefore covers those services together; it does not eliminate the need to configure the reliable messaging port separately.
Third-party flags that need verification
Some community guides list additional launch options, including -DisableSeasonalEvents and -DisablePacketRouting. Those options are not established by the official dedicated-server documentation summarized here. If you use one, verify that it is accepted by your installed game build and test it after an update. Do not assume that a flag documented for an older build remains supported.

Change INI values without losing them
INI editing is powerful but easy to undo accidentally. Always stop the process first. Satisfactory writes configuration during a clean shutdown, so a file saved while the server is running may be replaced by the in-memory values when the server exits.
- Use a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting.
- Preserve section headers, equals signs and key capitalization.
- Change only the key you intend to change.
- Keep a backup of the previous file.
- Restart and inspect logs after saving.
- After an update, recheck custom values because generated configuration can change.
The official material confirms Game.ini for the player-cap setting. A community guide describes a server-side Engine.ini, Game.ini and GameUserSettings.ini arrangement, but the official Settings documentation describes GameUserSettings.ini for the client under the user’s AppData location. The server-side status of that file is therefore not established here; do not add server settings to it unless your installed build or a current official document explicitly identifies it.

The sources reviewed do not document in-game commands such as /kick or /ban for Satisfactory dedicated servers. Administration instead runs through Server Manager, configuration files, startup options and the HTTPS API. Plan access around those interfaces: protect the manager and API credentials, restrict administrative ports at the firewall, and keep a record of who can stop or reconfigure the process.
Troubleshoot common configuration problems
The setting reverts after a restart
For an INI value, the most common cause is editing while the server was still running. Stop it gracefully, wait for the process to end, edit the file, then start again. For a Server Manager value, change it through the manager rather than touching ServerSettings.<PORT>.sav. Also check that you edited the configuration directory belonging to the instance you actually launch.
The server does not accept the new player cap
Confirm that MaxPlayers is under [/Script/Engine.GameSession] in the active Game.ini. Remove duplicate entries, restart the server and check the startup log. If you used an -ini: override, inspect the service or shortcut to ensure the argument is present and correctly punctuated.
Players cannot connect after a port change
Confirm the process is listening on the selected main port and reliable port, update host-firewall rules, update router forwarding and ensure players are using the new endpoint. Remember that the main port carries game traffic, query traffic and the HTTPS API in Update 8 and later, while reliable messaging uses its separate port.
Autosaves cause noticeable pauses
Increase the interval rather than disabling saves immediately. Compare a five-minute default with a longer value, observe the save-time pause in the actual factory and keep an independent backup routine. If the console command appears ineffective, verify that you entered seconds and that the command was submitted to the selected server’s Console tab.
The server starts with dialogs or stops unattended
On Linux, -Unattended is documented as enabled by default, but adding it explicitly can make a service definition clearer. Add -Log while diagnosing startup so errors remain visible in the terminal. Remove temporary diagnostic flags only after the service is stable and your normal logging is configured.
Version, defaults and safe expectations
Configuration documentation can lag behind game updates. The documented values in this guide are the cited defaults and examples: a four-player default, a five-minute (300-second) autosave default, a 0–120-minute autosave range, three rotating autosave slots, main port 7777 and reliable port 8888. Check the current official wiki revision and your installed build before treating any default as immutable, especially after a major update.
The player-cap example of eight is not a performance guarantee, and no confirmed supported theoretical maximum is established here. Keep the cap at the default unless you have a reason to raise it, test with your own world and players, and retain a rollback plan.
