How to Adjust Vice Grips for a Secure Hold

Fit the jaws to the workpiece, adjust the screw gradually, and test that the handles lock and the work stays secure. Learn how jaw shape and safe release matter.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To adjust vice grips, set the screw so the jaws fit the workpiece, then squeeze the handles until the locking mechanism engages. The work should stay put without slipping. If the handles will not lock or the hold is loose, release the tool, make a small adjustment to the screw, and test again. There is no universal turn count: the right setting depends on the pliers and the workpiece.

The adjustment is a fit-and-check process, not a matter of turning the screw a prescribed number of times. Match the jaw shape and size to the material, start with a fit that allows the jaws to close, and make gradual changes until the handles lock and the work is secure. Use the release mechanism to remove the tool, keeping your fingers clear of the jaws and pinch points.

Set the jaws and adjustment screw

  1. Choose the right jaw shape. Straight jaws offer contact on flat, square, or hex-shaped work. Curved jaws can better fit varied shapes, including round pipe and square or hex fasteners. IRWIN describes these uses for its Original straight-jaw and Original 5CR curved-jaw models; match the jaw shape and size to the workpiece rather than treating one style as best for every job.
  2. Open the pliers and position the workpiece. Place the material between the jaws where you want it held. Keep your fingers clear of the jaws and the points where the handles close. Before squeezing, check that the workpiece is positioned between the jaws rather than beside or beyond them.
  3. Set the fit with the adjustment screw. Turn the screw until the jaws can close around the workpiece. IRWIN describes the screw on its Original straight-jaw model as a way to “adjust pressure and fit work.” The setting is both a fit adjustment and a pressure adjustment.
  4. Squeeze the handles to engage the lock. The jaws should hold the work securely without slipping. A screw setting that leaves the handles unable to close and lock needs adjustment; do not force the handles shut.
  5. Test and refine if needed. If the workpiece is loose, or the handles will not close and lock, release the pliers and turn the screw a small amount. Try closing the handles again. Repeat in small increments until the lock engages and the hold is secure.

IRWIN’s safety guidance says to tighten the adjusting screw by hand or with a hex key only. Do not use another tool to force the screw. The manufacturer’s cited product information does not give a standard turn count or fixed setting, so use the lock and the workpiece’s fit—not a guessed number of turns—as your check.

A careful first adjustment

Begin with the pliers open and the material in the intended position. Turn the adjustment screw until the jaws are set to a fit that lets them close around the work. Then squeeze the handles and pay attention to the result: either the locking mechanism engages and the material is held, or the setting needs another small adjustment. The point of this first pass is to find a usable fit, not to predict a particular screw position in advance.

If you cannot close and lock the handles, release the pliers before changing the screw. Make a small change, bring the jaws back around the workpiece, and try closing again. If the handles close and lock but the work still moves, release the tool and make another small adjustment before retesting. Repeating that cycle gives you a direct check of both the fit and hold. It also avoids treating force on the handles as a substitute for setting the screw correctly.

The sources do not specify how many degrees or turns to make per adjustment, nor do they identify a single correct position for a given material. Consequently, “small amount” means an incremental change followed by another fit-and-lock check, rather than a fixed measurement. The screw changes jaw fit and clamping pressure; how much adjustment is needed depends on the pliers and the workpiece.

How tight should vice grips be?

Tight enough for the jaws to hold the work securely without slipping, and for the handles to close until the locking mechanism engages. If the pliers will not lock, adjust the screw rather than forcing the handles. If the workpiece still moves after locking, release the tool and make a small screw adjustment before testing again.

The sources do not establish a universal grip force or exact setting. The right fit varies with the pliers and workpiece, so check the actual lock and hold each time rather than relying on a fixed screw position. A locked handle position by itself is not the whole test: the jaws should also hold the work securely. Conversely, a workpiece that seems snug between open jaws is not yet secured by the locking mechanism; close the handles and confirm the lock engages.

Use the result of the test to decide what to do next. If the handles do not close and lock, release and adjust. If the jaws lock but the workpiece is loose, release and adjust. If the handles lock and the material remains secure without slipping, the fit meets the practical goal described here. No exact force number or turn count is needed or supported by the manufacturer product information.

Choose jaws that match the work

Jaw style Best-supported fit What to check
Straight Flat, square, or hex-shaped work, according to IRWIN’s Original straight-jaw product information. Whether the jaws make suitable contact with the workpiece’s shape and dimensions.
Curved Varied shapes, including round pipe and square or hex fasteners, according to IRWIN’s Original 5CR product information. Whether the jaw size and curve fit the workpiece securely.

These are different configurations, not a ranking. The shape and size of the workpiece determine which jaws are appropriate.

In practical terms, think about the material’s outline and dimensions before adjusting the screw. A flat, square, or hex-shaped item is within IRWIN’s stated straight-jaw use. For a round pipe or a workpiece with varied shapes, IRWIN describes curved jaws as an option. These descriptions are examples of supported applications, not a promise that every straight or curved jaw will fit every size of material. Compare the jaw shape and capacity with the actual dimensions of the workpiece, then use the lock-and-hold check.

Jaw choice and screw adjustment solve related but different parts of the task. The jaw shape helps determine whether the pliers can make a suitable fit around the material. The adjustment screw sets that fit and the clamping pressure. If the jaws do not match the workpiece well, repeatedly changing the screw does not change the jaw configuration. Reconsider whether the tool’s jaw shape and size suit the work before continuing to refine the setting.

If the pliers do not hold or lock

  • The handles will not close and lock: Release the pliers and make a small adjustment to the screw, then try again. Do not force the handles.
  • The workpiece is loose after locking: Release the tool, make a small adjustment, and retest the hold.
  • The jaws do not fit the workpiece well: Check whether the jaw shape and size suit the material. Straight jaws are described for flat, square, or hex work; curved jaws for varied shapes such as pipe and fasteners.
  • You are unsure whether the setting is right: Release and reposition the pliers, then repeat the fit-and-lock check in small increments. No fixed turn count is specified by the cited product information.

Keep the troubleshooting sequence simple: release first, adjust the screw gradually, reposition the jaws, and test again. Make the adjustment only after releasing the handles; then you can assess the next attempt rather than pushing harder against a setting that is not working. If the hold remains uncertain, do not treat the tool as secure merely because the jaws are touching the material.

Also distinguish a screw-setting problem from a jaw-fit problem. A setting that prevents the handles from locking or leaves the material loose calls for a small adjustment and a retest. A jaw shape or size that does not correspond to the workpiece calls for checking the tool configuration. IRWIN’s descriptions of straight and curved jaws help make that comparison, but do not provide a universal capacity chart in the product information cited here. Check the specific pliers’ fit against the workpiece rather than assuming that a jaw style or model will suit every dimension.

Release the pliers safely

Use the tool’s release mechanism to remove the pliers, and keep fingers clear of the jaws and pinch points as the lock releases. IRWIN’s Fast Release 10R product information describes a triggerless release for that model; release designs can vary, so use the mechanism on the pliers you have.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not pull the work free while the jaws remain locked around it. Use the release built into the tool, keeping your hands away from the closing points as the lock disengages. Because release arrangements differ by model, the Fast Release 10R description should not be taken as a universal design instruction. Identify and use the release mechanism on your own pliers.

Safety limits to keep in mind

  • Do not use Vise-Grip locking tools on live wires. IRWIN warns that handle grips “DO NOT provide protection against electrical shock.” Gloves do not make energized electrical work safe.
  • Wear safety goggles, gloves, and other appropriate protective equipment, as IRWIN’s safety guidance instructs.
  • Inspect the tool and workpiece, and keep hands clear of pinch points while closing or releasing the handles.
  • A secure hold from locking pliers is not a substitute for a clamp, vise, or support when the job requires one. Do not use them as a lifting device.

The restriction on live wires is important even if the handles are covered with grips: IRWIN expressly says those grips do not protect against electrical shock. Do not interpret its recommendation to wear gloves as making energized electrical work safe. Use the tool only within the limits of the job and the manufacturer’s instructions, and choose a clamp, vise, or other support if the task calls for one. A locked hold does not turn locking pliers into lifting equipment.

Before closing or releasing the handles, keep your fingers out of the jaws and pinch points. Check the tool and workpiece, and wear the protective equipment IRWIN recommends, including safety goggles, gloves, and other appropriate items. Follow the tool’s release mechanism rather than placing fingers near the jaws to free the work.

These electrical and protective-equipment warnings are from IRWIN Tools’ Safety Warnings page, accessed October 9, 2026. The adjustment and jaw-fit descriptions come from IRWIN’s product information for its Original straight-jaw, Original 5CR curved-jaw, and Fast Release 10R locking pliers.

Choosing locking pliers for the job

If you are selecting pliers rather than adjusting a tool already on hand, use the workpiece as the starting point. IRWIN identifies straight jaws for flat, square, or hex work and describes curved jaws for varied shapes including round pipe and fasteners. Compare the jaw shape and size with the material you intend to hold; neither configuration is a universal best choice. The purpose of selecting the matching configuration is to start with jaws that can fit the work before you set pressure with the screw.

Product pages for the IRWIN Original straight-jaw and Original 5CR curved-jaw locking pliers describe the pressure-and-fit adjustment and their respective jaw uses. The Fast Release 10R page describes a triggerless release on that model. These details can help identify the type of tool and feature being discussed, but they do not establish a single model or size for every job. Choose for the workpiece and the needed jaw fit, and use the release mechanism provided on the specific tool.

This guide does not promise a current price, stock status, or a particular retailer for any model. Its central advice applies whether you are working with pliers you already own or comparing locking-pliers configurations: match jaws to the material, adjust the screw gradually by hand or with a hex key, and verify that the lock engages and the work does not slip.
