Change mouse sensitivity in your operating system’s mouse settings—no new hardware is needed. Windows calls it Mouse pointer speed, macOS calls it Tracking speed, and Ubuntu’s GNOME desktop calls it Pointer Speed. Use the steps for your system below, then make small adjustments until the pointer feels comfortable.
Change mouse speed in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Move the Mouse pointer speed slider. Move it toward a faster response if the pointer feels too slow, or toward a slower response if it feels too fast.
Windows also offers Enhance pointer precision in Mouse settings. It affects how the pointer responds while the mouse moves slowly; it is separate from the speed slider. Microsoft documents both controls in its mouse settings guide.

Change mouse speed in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Mouse.
- Adjust the Cursor speed slider.
To change pointer precision, open Additional mouse options > Pointer Options and select or clear Enhance pointer precision. These are Microsoft’s documented Windows 10 labels and paths; menu wording may vary with the installed version. Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. See its mouse settings guide for the instructions.

Change tracking speed on a Mac
- Open the Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Mouse > Point & Click.
- Drag the Tracking speed slider to adjust how quickly the pointer moves.
If you are changing the built-in trackpad instead, select Trackpad rather than Mouse. Apple also documents a pointer-acceleration control under Advanced in the cited Mac guide. Tracking speed is not the same as double-click speed or scrolling speed; those controls are separate. See Apple’s Mac guide to tracking, double-click, and scrolling speed.

Change mouse speed in Linux
Linux does not have one universal settings path: the controls depend on the desktop environment. These steps cover Ubuntu with GNOME and KDE Plasma.
Ubuntu with GNOME
- Open the Activities overview and search for Mouse & Touchpad.
- Open the panel, find the Mouse section, and adjust Pointer Speed.
The Mouse section appears when a mouse is connected; the Touchpad section appears when the system has a touchpad. Ubuntu notes that a comfortable setting for a mouse may not be the right setting for a touchpad. Follow Ubuntu’s mouse and touchpad speed instructions.

KDE Plasma
- Open System Settings > Mouse.
- Adjust Pointer speed. To change how speed varies with movement, use the separate Pointer acceleration setting.
KDE’s None acceleration option keeps acceleration constant regardless of how quickly the mouse moves. Other Linux desktops may use different labels or locations. See the KDE Plasma Mouse documentation.

Fine-tune the setting without confusing controls
- Make a small slider change, then move the pointer around the screen before adjusting again. There is no single ideal setting established for every person, task, and device.
- Pointer or tracking speed changes cursor movement. Acceleration changes how the response varies with movement speed. These controls are related but not interchangeable.
- Scrolling speed changes how content moves when scrolling; double-click speed changes the allowed time between clicks. Adjust those only if scrolling or registering a double-click is the problem.
- Do not expect the same slider position—or a similar-looking value—to feel identical across Windows, macOS, GNOME, and KDE. Their documented controls do not provide a shared scale or conversion formula.
