If your Bluetooth headset goes silent only during Android calls handled by Phone Link, it may not be muted or broken: Microsoft says Phone Link does not currently support relaying an Android phone call to a Bluetooth headset over Bluetooth. If the headset is also silent in other Windows apps, troubleshoot Windows audio and Bluetooth separately.
First, find out whether the problem is limited to Phone Link calls
Play music or video on the PC, or test the headset in another calling app. If those work but a call through Phone Link does not reach the headset, start with Phone Link’s documented call-routing limitation. If the headset is silent across Windows apps, check Windows’ selected output, volume, Bluetooth connection, and drivers instead.

- Other PC audio is silent too: follow the Windows Bluetooth checks below; this points to a broader audio or connection issue. Microsoft’s Bluetooth-connected-but-no-sound guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10.
- Playback quality drops only while the microphone is in use: that may reflect Bluetooth audio profiles, not muting. The distinction is explained below.
What to check for Phone Link call problems
The Bluetooth-headset relay limitation is not a setting that the checks below can bypass. They can help with notifications or other call problems, but they do not make unsupported Bluetooth call routing work.

- Check Do Not Disturb. If call notifications are being silenced, make sure Do Not Disturb is off. Silenced notifications and missing headset call audio are not necessarily the same problem.
- Restart Phone Link and the PC. If the issue continues, Microsoft advises restarting the PC and closing and reopening Phone Link.
- Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth accessories. Microsoft suggests this as a check when call audio quality is poor; reconnect the accessories afterward and see whether quality changes. It is not a fix for the documented headset-routing limitation.
Microsoft suggests a wired headset for bad echo, but that advice is specific to echo and is not a guarantee that a wired headset will resolve missing Bluetooth call audio.

If the headset is silent in other Windows apps
- Confirm the output device and volume. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound > Output, select the Bluetooth headset, and check system volume. Windows labels may vary by release.
- Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter. Open the Get Help app and run its automated Bluetooth troubleshooter.
- Remove and pair the headset again. If Windows shows it as connected but it still produces no sound, remove the device from Bluetooth settings, then pair it again.
- Toggle Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it back on before testing the headset again.
- Check Bluetooth drivers. Install current Bluetooth drivers for the PC. For broader Windows sound or microphone checks, see Microsoft’s sound and audio troubleshooting guide.
Why call audio can sound different from music
Bluetooth Classic uses different profiles for different tasks. Microsoft’s Bluetooth Classic Audio documentation describes A2DP as stereo playback and HFP as mono playback with microphone capture. When an app uses the headset microphone during a call, playback quality can change as the hands-free audio path is used. A quality drop is not the same as complete silence, and this profile behavior does not remove Phone Link’s stated routing limitation.
Disabling a headset’s hands-free service is not a universal solution: it can remove microphone or call functionality, and Microsoft does not prescribe that workaround for Phone Link.
