What is the best point-and-shoot camera? It depends on what you want it to do: the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VII offers the most versatile zoom, the Ricoh GR IV prioritizes pocketable still photos, the Fujifilm X100VI is an enthusiast fixed-lens choice, the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III balances photos and video, and the OM System Tough TG-7 is built for rugged use.
These are five role-based recommendations, not a shared-score ranking. Choose by lens, portability, video needs, and durability, then check local price and stock before buying.

Which compact camera should you buy?
Start with how you will use the camera. A zoom lens helps when you want to reframe without moving; a fixed lens can suit a simpler, still-photo-focused setup. For video, look beyond a camera’s reputation for photographs. If you expect rain, cold, or rough handling, prioritize a rugged design.

Five point-and-shoot cameras, matched to different priorities
Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VII: best all-around zoom compact
Choose the RX100 VII if you want one compact camera to handle varied framing rather than commit to a single focal length. Digital Camera World includes it among its premium point-and-shoot picks, while RTINGS’ comparison with the older GR III describes the Sony as the more all-around option, highlighting its zoom, tilting screen, pop-up electronic viewfinder, and stronger video capabilities. The comparison is with the GR III, not the GR IV, so it supports the general zoom-versus-fixed-lens distinction rather than a direct specification comparison with the newer Ricoh.
The main compromises are cost and limited supply, as noted in Digital Camera World’s 2026 point-and-shoot guide. Verify current local availability and price before settling on it.
Ricoh GR IV: best pocketable still-photo choice
The GR IV is the clearest fit here if carrying a truly pocketable camera matters more than optical zoom. TechRadar’s guide identifies its APS-C sensor and fixed 28mm-equivalent f/2.8–16 lens. That wide-angle view suits everyday scenes and street photography, but you cannot zoom optically to change framing.

Rank #2
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
TechRadar notes that the GR IV has no viewfinder, lacks weather sealing, and records video up to 1080p. Treat it as a stills-first option, particularly if video resolution or protection from the elements matters to you. See TechRadar’s point-and-shoot guide.
Fujifilm X100VI: best enthusiast fixed-lens camera
For an enthusiast who wants a fixed-lens camera with a larger sensor and a bright lens, RTINGS names the X100VI its top compact pick for enthusiasts. It pairs a high-resolution APS-C sensor with a 35mm-equivalent f/2 lens, in-body stabilization, and a hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder. The fixed lens rewards a deliberate approach to framing rather than offering zoom flexibility.
It is relatively large for a compact and often hard to find in stock, according to RTINGS’ 2026 compact-camera guide. Its enthusiast-oriented strengths may not justify the size or availability trade-off if your priority is a camera that disappears into a pocket.
Rank #3
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging

Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III: best photo/video hybrid
The G7 X Mark III is a practical candidate if you want a zoom compact for both photographs and video. Canon’s U.S. specifications list a 4.2x optical zoom covering 24–100mm equivalent, optical image stabilization, and a tilting 3-inch LCD. TechRadar highlights its photo/video balance and microphone input.
Check availability with a local retailer before building a purchase plan around it; stock should not be assumed. The specifications above are listed on Canon’s official U.S. product page, and TechRadar discusses its role in its current point-and-shoot guide.
OM System Tough TG-7: best for rough conditions and macro
The TG-7 is the straightforward choice among these five for wet, cold, or rough outdoor use. Digital Camera World describes it as waterproof, freezeproof, crushproof, and drop/shockproof, and highlights built-in GPS and macro capability. Those design priorities make it distinct from the other picks, which are not presented as rugged alternatives.

Digital Camera World’s guide lists a 12MP sensor and characterizes the TG-7 as a modest update over the earlier TG-6. Choose it for durability and close-up versatility rather than because it has the largest sensor or the most substantial generational upgrade. Details are in the guide’s TG-7 coverage.

A zoom is useful when you need to change framing quickly, for example when a subject is too far away or you cannot move closer. In this group, the Sony RX100 VII and Canon G7 X Mark III are the zoom choices. The Canon’s documented range is 24–100mm equivalent; the Sony is described in the reviewed coverage as having a versatile zoom, but the comparison source used here does not establish a matching focal-length figure.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The GR IV and X100VI use fixed focal lengths. Their APS-C sensors are central to the still-photo case made for both models, but sensor size alone does not guarantee a particular result: handling, lens choice, focus, light, and the photographer’s needs also matter. The GR IV’s 28mm-equivalent view favors a wider framing; the X100VI’s 35mm-equivalent lens offers a narrower standard view.

For context on the trade-off, RTINGS’ comparison updated in August 2026 contrasts the Sony RX100 VII with the Ricoh GR III, not the GR IV. Use it for the broad distinction between zoom flexibility and a fixed lens, not as evidence that the two Ricoh models have identical specifications: RTINGS’ GR III versus RX100 VII comparison.
What to prioritize for video, portability, or durability
- Video: Start with the Sony RX100 VII or Canon G7 X Mark III if video flexibility is important. TechRadar characterizes both as stronger hybrid/video options; it says the GR IV tops out at 1080p.
- Pocketability: The GR IV is framed as a true pocket camera. The X100VI is less portable than some compacts, despite its enthusiast appeal.
- Weather and rough handling: The TG-7 is the rugged-use pick. The GR IV is not weather sealed, so do not treat its small size as outdoor protection.
Check price and stock before you commit
Camera prices and availability change, and current guides flag limited supply for some popular premium models, including the RX100 VII and X100VI. A recommendation does not guarantee that a camera is available in your country or at a price that suits you. Check a local retailer or authorized dealer for current stock, regional terms, and price before buying.
