For a natural-sounding starting point in ElevenLabs, try Stability around 50, Similarity around 75, Style Exaggeration at 0, and Speed at 1.0. These are starting values, not a guaranteed formula: the best balance depends on the voice, the quality of its source audio, the text, and the performance you want. Generate the same passage more than once and adjust one setting at a time.
Start with a balanced set of voice settings
ElevenLabs Studio documentation describes Stability around 50 and Similarity near 75 as common settings, while emphasizing that workflows and intended performances differ. These settings affect different aspects of the output, so avoid changing several at once. That makes it easier to identify which adjustment helped—or introduced a problem.
What each setting changes
Stability: variation versus consistency
Stability controls how much generations vary. Lower values can allow a wider emotional range, but may sound erratic; higher values tend to be more consistent, but can make delivery monotonous. For conversational voices, ElevenLabs suggests 0.30–0.50 for dynamic delivery and 0.60–0.85 for consistency. These are product-guidance ranges, not independently validated targets for every voice. Similarity: voice fidelity and source quality
Similarity controls how closely the model follows the selected source voice. Raising it may help preserve that voice’s identity and clarity, but pushing it too high can cause distortion. It can also carry flaws forward: if the source recording has noise or other artifacts, high similarity may reproduce them. If you hear those problems, lower Similarity rather than assuming a higher value is always better.
Style Exaggeration: stronger performance, less predictability
Style Exaggeration amplifies the speaker’s original style. It can make the output less stable and add latency; in some cases, it can also lead to inconsistent speed, mispronunciations, or extra sounds. For natural speech, leave it at zero unless you specifically want a more pronounced performance. Speed: make small adjustments around 1.0
Speed 1.0 is the default; values below it slow speech, and values above it speed speech up. ElevenLabs suggests 0.9–1.1 for most natural conversations, but that range is not a promise that every voice will sound natural at every value. Speaker Boost: decide with an A/B comparison
Speaker Boost increases similarity to the original speaker. The audible difference is generally subtle, while computational load and latency can rise. Generate the same passage with the setting on and off; keep it enabled only if the change is useful for your project. Edit voice settings

Refine the result with repeatable comparisons
- Choose the voice first. Select one that suits the intended tone and use. Sliders cannot reliably compensate for a mismatched voice or poor source recording.
- Prepare a representative passage. Use a short sample that includes the sentence types, pauses, names, and numbers that matter in your real text.
- Generate multiple samples at the baseline. ElevenLabs describes generation as non-deterministic, so identical settings do not guarantee identical output. Compare more than one sample before attributing a difference to a slider. ElevenLabs Studio overview
- Change one control at a time. If delivery feels flat, lower Stability slightly. If it wanders or sounds erratic, raise it. Regenerate the same passage after each adjustment.
- Check Similarity against the source. Keep it high enough to retain the chosen voice, but reduce it if you hear source artifacts or distortion.
- Keep Style at zero unless you want stronger character. If raising it produces extra sounds, inconsistent pacing, or mispronunciations, return it to zero and generate again.
- Adjust Speed in small increments. Start at 1.0 and move gradually toward the conversational 0.9–1.1 guidance only if the pacing needs work.
- Test Speaker Boost separately. Compare on and off with the same text, and weigh any audible improvement against added latency.
For each comparison, judge pacing, emotional variation versus consistency, fidelity to the selected voice, artifacts or unwanted sounds, pronunciation, and latency. There is no published controlled scorecard that ranks these settings for naturalness, so the useful choice is the one that works for your voice and intended performance.
Apply changes to a passage or across a Studio project
In Studio, use an override on selected text when only that passage needs different settings. For broader changes, adjust the voice settings for the project; regenerate affected audio after changing them. Names, acronyms, and numbers are mispronounced

A cloned voice sounds inconsistent
Use consistent, clean training audio. Microphone distance, background noise, and abrupt changes in delivery can affect consistency, so changing generation sliders may not resolve an issue rooted in the source recordings. ElevenLabs troubleshooting
How to judge whether a setting is natural for your voice
- Pacing: Sentences and pauses sound appropriate rather than rushed or stretched.
- Variation: The delivery has enough expression for the text without becoming erratic.
- Voice fidelity: The output still sounds like the voice you selected, without amplified source defects.
- Clean output: You do not hear unwanted noises, distortion, or avoidable pronunciation problems.
- Practicality: Any improvement is worth the latency or processing trade-off associated with the settings you enabled.
ElevenLabs’ published ranges are configuration guidance, not the results of an independent controlled comparison. Because the output varies and the intended performance matters, use the same text and listen across regenerated samples rather than treating a particular slider combination as a guarantee.
