How to adjust dialogue, music, and effects volume in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

Open the main-menu Settings menu (called Options in some Activision documentation), choose Audio, and move Music Volume, Dialogue Volume, or Effects Volume independently. Master Volume changes the whole game mix. To change player voices without changing game audio, use Voice Chat Volume in the Audio section. Menu labels can vary slightly by platform, and an update is the first fix to try if a slider appears not to work.

The exact menu path

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 keeps the relevant controls in the main menu rather than requiring a match to be running. From the title screen:

  1. Open Settings. Activision documentation sometimes calls this menu Options.
  2. Select Audio.
  3. Adjust Music Volume, Dialogue Volume, and Effects Volume separately.
  4. Use Master Volume only when you want to raise or lower the complete game mix.
  5. For player voice chat, remain in the Audio settings and change Voice Chat Volume.
  6. Return to the game and listen to the result in a menu, campaign scene, or match. Reopen Audio if you need to make a second adjustment.

The current Modern Warfare support guidance directly confirms the Settings/Audio route and the separate Voice Chat Volume control. Activision’s broader Modern Warfare settings documentation identifies the individual music, effects, dialogue, and master controls used by the series. Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026, so the labels on the release build may differ slightly from pre-release or platform-specific screens.

What each volume slider changes

Changing the correct control is more reliable than simply lowering everything. The four game-mix sliders have different jobs:

Control Use it for What it does not change
Music Volume Menu music, score, and other musical elements Character speech, weapon sounds, footsteps, and other effects
Dialogue Volume Character and mission speech presented as game dialogue Music, general effects, and the separate player voice-chat mix
Effects Volume Gameplay sound effects such as weapons, movement, impacts, and environmental cues Music and dialogue controls
Master Volume The overall level of the game audio mix It does not provide the same selective balance as the individual sliders
Voice Chat Volume Other players’ voice chat Music, campaign dialogue, and ordinary gameplay effects

There is no published, complete table of default numeric values for these sliders on every Modern Warfare 4 platform. Do not assume that a percentage shown on one system is the universal default.

How to turn down the music without losing gameplay cues

If the score is masking footsteps, reload sounds, or radio lines, lower only Music Volume first. Leave Effects Volume and Dialogue Volume where they are, then listen to the same type of scene again. This preserves the sounds that communicate what is happening around you while reducing the continuous musical layer.

For a quieter menu and cinematic mix

  1. Open Settings/Options → Audio from the main menu.
  2. Reduce Music Volume in a small step.
  3. Preview a menu or cinematic scene before changing another slider.
  4. If speech is still difficult to hear, raise Dialogue Volume rather than restoring the music.

For a gameplay-focused mix

Keep music lower, then give Effects Volume priority over the score. This is a listening preference, not a guarantee that every sound will be equally prominent: the game’s mix, your headset or speakers, and the room can all affect what you perceive.

How to make character dialogue clearer

Use Dialogue Volume for campaign conversations, mission callouts, and other speech treated as in-game dialogue. If music is competing with speech, lower Music Volume before making a large change to effects. If explosions and gunfire are the problem, reduce Effects Volume slightly while keeping dialogue higher.

When dialogue is missing but other sounds work

First, check that Dialogue Volume has not been reduced while Effects Volume remains audible. Then check the physical or system output: confirm that the headset or speakers are connected to the intended device and that the platform has not switched to another output. Return to the game after each change so you can identify which setting fixed the problem.

If music and effects play but spoken lines remain absent after those checks, update Modern Warfare 4 and restart it. Audio behavior has been actively tuned during testing, including occlusion changes and other fixes, so a software issue can make a control appear ineffective. If the problem persists on the current build, record which audio categories work, which do not, and whether the issue occurs in menus, cinematics, multiplayer, or all modes before contacting platform or game support.

How to make voice chat louder without changing game sound

Do not raise Master Volume for this purpose. Open Settings/Options → Audio, locate the Voice Chat area, and adjust Voice Chat Volume. This control is separate from the music, dialogue, effects, and master sliders, so it lets you increase or reduce player voices while leaving the game mix intact.

If voice chat is still too quiet

  • Confirm that you changed Voice Chat Volume, not Dialogue Volume. The latter affects game-presented speech, not necessarily other players.
  • Check that your platform account’s communication permissions allow voice chat. Platform communication settings can override or restrict in-game behavior.
  • Verify that the intended headset or output device is selected at the platform level and that its own volume control is not turned down.
  • Ask another player whether they can be heard, then test again after returning to the Audio menu.
  • Install the latest game update if the control has no audible effect. Activision’s audio fixes show that voice and other mix behavior can change between builds.

Choosing a mix for different situations

There is no single correct balance. Start with the category that matters most for the way you play, then change one slider at a time so you know what caused the improvement.

Priority Adjust first Reason Trade-off
Competitive awareness Lower Music Volume; keep Effects Volume prominent Reduces a constant layer while preserving movement, weapon, and impact cues The presentation is less cinematic
Story and cinematics Raise or preserve Dialogue Volume; keep Music Volume at a comfortable level Makes spoken lines easier to follow while retaining the score Very loud effects can still cover speech in intense scenes
Quiet-room listening Set Master Volume to a comfortable overall level, then fine-tune individual sliders Prevents unnecessarily loud output while preserving your chosen balance Lowering Master Volume does not selectively remove one category
Busy or noisy environment Increase the category you need, then lower competing categories Selective changes are more intelligible than raising everything Increasing total loudness may cause fatigue; use the smallest useful change
Team communication Set Voice Chat Volume independently Keeps teammates audible without changing the game mix Platform communication restrictions can still prevent or limit chat

Platform and menu-label differences

Modern Warfare 4 is listed for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. The settings concept is shared, but the button used to open the main menu, the word Settings versus Options, and the exact layout can vary by platform or build.

Do not treat a different label as evidence that the control is missing. Look for an Audio category from the main menu, then identify the named sliders. If you are already in a match and cannot find the full list, return to the title screen; the documented path begins at the main menu.

PC considerations

On PC, first confirm which output device the operating system and game are using. A headset, monitor, and speakers can each appear as separate outputs. If the in-game meters move but you hear nothing, the problem is more likely the selected output or system mixer than the individual volume slider. After changing the system output, restart the game if it does not immediately follow the new device.

Console considerations

On a console, check the headset connection and the console’s communication or audio output settings in addition to the in-game Audio menu. A platform-level mute, privacy restriction, or chat-output choice can affect voice chat even when Voice Chat Volume is set correctly.

What to do when a slider appears not to work

Use this order so you do not lose a working balance while diagnosing the problem:

  1. Change one control at a time. Move the suspected slider, return to the game, and listen for the category it should affect.
  2. Check the correct category. Music, dialogue, effects, master, and voice chat are independent purposes; changing one does not necessarily alter another.
  3. Test outside the current moment. A scene may not contain the sound category you changed. Try a menu for music, a dialogue scene for speech, and active gameplay for effects.
  4. Confirm the output path. Check the platform or operating-system output device and any physical volume wheel, inline control, or mute switch.
  5. Update the game. Audio tuning and bug fixes can alter how sounds are mixed or routed. Restart after installing an update.
  6. Recheck platform communication permissions. This step applies especially when game audio works but player voice chat does not.
  7. Document the symptom. Note the platform, mode, output device, affected category, and game version if support is needed.

Why updates matter for Modern Warfare 4 audio

Activision’s beta notes document continuing audio maintenance rather than a permanently fixed mix. Examples include footstep-distance tuning, occlusion fixes, and a fix for lobby music continuing during matches. Those changes can affect how distant sounds, blocked sounds, and music transitions are perceived.

As a result, a slider that seemed ineffective in an earlier build may behave differently after an update, and a new mix issue can appear after a patch. Keep the game current before deciding that a control is broken. If an update changes the balance you prefer, return to Settings/Options → Audio and adjust the individual categories again instead of raising Master Volume to compensate for everything.

A repeatable setup procedure

Use this sequence whenever you install the game on a new platform, connect a different headset, or receive an audio patch:

  1. Start at the main menu and open Settings or Options.
  2. Open Audio and note the current position of each slider before changing anything.
  3. Set Master Volume to a comfortable overall loudness.
  4. Play a short section containing the sound you care about most.
  5. Adjust only the relevant individual slider: music for the score, dialogue for character speech, or effects for gameplay cues.
  6. Test a second scene so the change is not based on a moment with no sound in that category.
  7. Open the Voice Chat area and set Voice Chat Volume while another player is speaking or while using the platform’s voice test.
  8. Return to the game and confirm that the balance remains comfortable at normal listening volume.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using Master Volume for a selective fix: it changes the whole game mix and cannot target music, dialogue, effects, or chat individually.
  • Confusing dialogue with voice chat: character speech and player communication have separate controls.
  • Testing in the wrong scene: a menu cannot demonstrate effects, and a quiet gameplay moment cannot demonstrate dialogue.
  • Assuming all platforms show identical labels: Settings and Options are both used in official documentation, and layouts can vary.
  • Inventing a universal default: a complete default numeric table for every platform has not been published, so use the audible result rather than a presumed percentage.
  • Ignoring updates: documented audio tuning and bug fixes mean that behavior is tied to the installed build.

Quick checklist

  • Open Settings/Options → Audio from the main menu.
  • Use Music Volume to control the score.
  • Use Dialogue Volume to control game-presented speech.
  • Use Effects Volume to control gameplay sounds.
  • Use Master Volume for the complete game mix.
  • Use Voice Chat Volume for other players’ voices.
  • Check platform communication permissions when chat is unavailable or unusually quiet.
  • Update and restart the game if a slider has no apparent effect.
