How to Adjust Backup Camera Guidelines and Display Settings

A practical, vehicle-safe guide to showing or hiding backup-camera lines, adjusting brightness and contrast, understanding fixed versus moving guidance, and handling unclear or apparently misaligned images.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To change backup-camera lines or the picture, display the rear camera, open its setup control or the infotainment system’s camera menu, then use the guide-line option under Display Contents and image controls under Display Settings (or similarly named menus). There is no universal route: labels and available controls depend on the vehicle’s make, model year, trim, region, installed camera hardware and infotainment software.

The documented Kia, Hyundai and Renault systems show the range of normal behavior. You may be able to show or hide parking lines and adjust brightness and contrast, while another vehicle may adjust brightness automatically or offer no manual alignment function. Use the instructions for your exact vehicle rather than applying another model’s calibration procedure.

What you can usually change

Backup-camera settings generally fall into two groups:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Guidance display: whether parking lines, an extended rear view or another camera view appears on the screen.
  • Image display: brightness and contrast, when the camera system exposes those controls.

These settings affect what the monitor shows. They do not necessarily move the camera, correct a bent bracket or recalibrate steering-responsive paths. A line that looks wrong may be the wrong line type for the maneuver, a camera that has shifted, or a system that simply does not provide owner-accessible alignment.

Before opening the menu

Identify the exact vehicle system

Write down the make, model, model year, trim and region, and note whether the camera is factory-installed or an accessory. Infotainment menus can change after a software update, and two trims of the same vehicle may have different camera equipment. The owner manual for the exact vehicle is the authority when its wording differs from a general example.

Prepare a safe test

  • Park on level ground away from traffic, pedestrians and obstacles.
  • Keep your foot on the brake and follow the owner manual’s instructions for powering the vehicle and selecting Reverse.
  • Do not use menu controls while the vehicle is moving.
  • Use the camera as an aid, not as a replacement for mirrors, shoulder checks and direct observation.

Clean the lens first

Mud, road film, snow, water droplets or condensation can make a correctly configured image appear too dark, washed out or misaligned. Inspect the lens and clean it with a soft, suitable cloth before changing picture settings. Renault’s reversing-camera guidance specifically calls out an obscured lens as a cause of an unclear view.

General procedure for showing or hiding parking lines

  1. Display the rear camera. In many vehicles this means selecting Reverse while stationary. Some systems also provide a camera button.
  2. Open the camera setup control. Look for a gear, setup or settings icon on the camera screen. If none is visible, open the infotainment menus and look under Vehicle, Driver assistance, Parking safety, Display or Camera settings.
  3. Choose the guide-line setting. It may be called Display Contents, Parking guide lines, Rear-view parking guide lines or a similar phrase.
  4. Turn the desired content on or off. Clear the parking-line option to hide it, or select it to display it. If the vehicle lists an extended rear view or another camera angle, treat that as a separate content option.
  5. Exit and verify. Return to the camera image and confirm that the selected lines appear as expected. If the setting did not persist, repeat the change with the vehicle in Park and check whether the system requires a confirmation button.

A setting that hides lines does not remove them from the camera feed; it only changes the overlay on the monitor. Conversely, selecting a line option does not prove that the lines are calibrated for a particular parking space or trailer.

How to adjust brightness and contrast

  1. Display the rear camera and open its setup icon, or navigate to the vehicle’s camera menu.
  2. Open Display Settings or the equivalent image-adjustment page.
  3. Change Brightness gradually while viewing a familiar scene. Avoid raising it so far that shadows lose detail or lowering it until objects disappear.
  4. Adjust Contrast only after brightness is close. Excessive contrast can hide dark objects or make highlights flare.
  5. Save or confirm the change if the screen offers an apply button, then check the image again in the conditions in which you normally reverse.

Some cameras expose both controls; others adjust brightness automatically and omit manual display settings. If there is no brightness slider, that can be an intentional design rather than a missing feature.

Documented menu examples

The following examples show how labels differ. They are reference points, not a universal route for every vehicle.

System documented in the manuals Where settings are found Guide-line controls Image controls Important limitation
Kia rear-view monitor Open the rear-view monitor setup icon, or use Settings → Vehicle → Driver assistance → Parking safety → Camera settings. Display Contents includes rear-view parking guide lines and, where fitted, an extended rear view. Display Settings controls brightness and contrast. Menu availability depends on vehicle specifications; labels can change after an infotainment update.
Hyundai settings screen Camera Settings; some systems place the route at Settings → Display → Camera settings. Camera display-content options can include rear-view parking guide lines. Brightness and contrast are available on systems that provide manual display settings. Equipment and trim determine which items appear; some systems adjust brightness automatically.
Renault reversing camera Use the Settings control on the camera screen. Depending on equipment, lines may be fixed, moving or intended for trailer guidance. Camera-screen image settings are available in the documented system. The type and presence of each line depend on the installed system.

Kia: the documented route

On the Kia system described in the 2024 owner-manual page, open the rear-view monitor setup icon while the camera image is displayed. If that icon is not present, use Settings → Vehicle → Driver assistance → Parking safety → Camera settings.

Change the overlays

Open Display Contents. Select or clear the rear-view parking guide-line option. An extended rear-view choice, when listed, is a separate display feature and may not be installed on every vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change the picture

Open Display Settings to adjust brightness and contrast. If either control is absent, the vehicle specification may not support it, or the system may control the image automatically.

Hyundai: similar functions under different labels

Hyundai manuals describe camera settings that let the driver choose displayed content, including rear-view parking guide lines, and adjust brightness and contrast on systems that support those controls. One documented route is Settings → Display → Camera settings; another opens camera settings from the camera screen or a related vehicle menu.

Do not infer that every Hyundai model has the same path. The manual also notes systems that adjust camera brightness automatically. On those vehicles, a manual brightness page may not exist. The absence of a slider is therefore different from a malfunction.

Renault: fixed, moving and trailer lines

Renault’s documented reversing-camera system exposes a Settings control on the camera screen. It can add or remove guide lines and adjust image settings, but the line types are equipment-dependent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fixed lines

Fixed lines remain in the same screen position. They can indicate the vehicle’s projected width or a reference distance, but their exact meaning belongs to the vehicle manual.

Moving lines

Moving, or steering-responsive, lines change as the steering wheel turns. They are different from a static overlay and should not be judged with the wheels pointed at a different angle than the one used during testing.

Trailer lines

A trailer-oriented guide is intended for a system equipped to support that use. It is not interchangeable with ordinary parking lines. If your menu does not list trailer guidance, do not assume that a generic overlay can provide it.

What “misaligned lines” can mean

People often use “calibration” to describe any line that does not seem to match the vehicle. First identify the symptom:

  • Lines are missing: the guide-line option may be disabled, the camera content may have changed after an update, or the vehicle may not be equipped with overlays.
  • Lines stay still while the wheel turns: the vehicle may provide fixed lines only; steering-responsive guidance is not universal.
  • Lines move but appear offset: the camera angle, mounting position, steering calibration or the chosen line type may be involved.
  • The image is blurry or hazy: inspect the lens for dirt, moisture, snow or condensation before changing alignment settings.
  • The picture is too dark or bright: use the available image controls, but remember that some systems regulate brightness automatically.

Owner menus commonly let you show or hide content, not recalibrate the camera geometry. Do not drag lines on the screen, alter steering-related settings or loosen the camera mount unless the exact vehicle service information explicitly instructs you to do so.

Why another vehicle’s calibration instructions may be wrong

Calibration depends on camera height, lens angle, mounting position, vehicle dimensions, steering-angle data and the software that draws the overlay. A procedure for one model can produce an unsafe result on another even when both screens show “parking lines.” Differences also arise between a factory camera and an accessory camera, between a standard rear view and a trailer-capable system, and between fixed and steering-responsive overlays.

Garmin documents an alignment procedure for its own paired-camera system. That example proves only that the Garmin system has a system-specific alignment feature; it does not establish a universal procedure for an OEM vehicle. For a factory camera that appears genuinely misaligned after bodywork, a camera replacement or a mounting incident, use the exact owner manual and service information or have a qualified vehicle technician inspect it.

A careful testing routine after changing settings

  1. Use a level, open area. Avoid judging the image on a steep driveway or where the vehicle is leaning.
  2. Place a visible reference behind the vehicle. Keep it well clear of the vehicle and within the safe operating area described by the manual.
  3. Check the overlay with the steering centered. This distinguishes a fixed reference from a steering-responsive path.
  4. Turn the wheel slowly, if your system provides moving lines. Confirm that the overlay changes smoothly rather than assuming movement is supported.
  5. Verify the direct view. Look in the mirrors and around the vehicle; do not rely on the screen alone.
  6. Restore a comfortable image setting. Brightness that looks useful at night may be excessive in daylight, and vice versa. If the system is automatic, let it manage the adjustment.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The camera menu is missing

Display the camera first, then look for a setup icon. If the icon still does not appear, check Settings → Vehicle, Driver assistance, Parking safety, Display and Camera settings in turn. A missing menu can be normal when the trim lacks the feature. Confirm the exact infotainment version and consult the matching manual rather than selecting a neighboring model’s instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Guide lines will not appear

Open the display-content page and ensure the rear-view parking guide-line option is selected. If it is selected but no overlay appears, the vehicle may not support that line type, the camera content may be restricted in the current operating state, or a software or hardware fault may exist. Do not assume that a hidden line can be restored by changing brightness.

Brightness cannot be adjusted

Check whether the system documents automatic brightness. If so, no manual slider is expected. If the manual promises a control that is absent, verify that you are in the camera’s display settings rather than the general screen-brightness page, then check for an infotainment update or a vehicle-specific support procedure.

The image remains unclear after cleaning

Look for condensation inside the lens cover, a cracked cover, physical damage or a loose mount. If the problem persists in dry conditions, treat it as a possible hardware or wiring issue and seek vehicle-specific service. Do not attempt a generic “calibration” to cure a physically damaged camera.

The lines seem inaccurate after repairs

Note whether the camera, tailgate, bumper or rear body panel was removed or replaced. Photograph the symptom with the steering centered, then consult the exact service information. A technician may need to inspect mounting position, camera aim or related vehicle data; the owner menu may offer no correction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fixed versus moving guidance: how to read the screen

Line behavior What it may represent What you can usually do
Fixed A static width or distance reference drawn over the rear image. Show or hide it if the vehicle provides a display-content option.
Moving with steering A steering-responsive path calculated by the vehicle system. Use it only as the system describes; availability and accuracy depend on vehicle-specific data and setup.
Trailer-oriented Guidance intended for a trailer-capable camera system. Select it only when the vehicle explicitly provides that mode and instructions.

The presence of one type does not imply the presence of the others. A vehicle can provide fixed lines without moving guidance, or no overlay at all.

When a professional inspection is appropriate

Arrange vehicle-specific service when the camera feed is intermittent, the image has persistent internal moisture, the camera or mount is visibly damaged, the overlay changed immediately after bodywork, or the system reports a fault. Bring the vehicle’s make, model year, trim and infotainment version, and describe whether the issue affects the image, the lines or both. A professional can determine whether the cause is software, wiring, mounting, camera aim or a related sensor system.

A replacement camera, calibration target or installation tool is not a universal solution for a settings question. Those items become relevant only after the vehicle-specific diagnosis identifies a failed component or a required alignment procedure.

How to find the exact instructions for your vehicle

  1. Locate the owner manual for the correct model year and market.
  2. Search its index for rear view monitor, reversing camera, camera settings, parking guide lines and display contents.
  3. Check the equipment or specification notes beside each setting; they explain why a menu may not appear.
  4. Compare the manual’s screen labels with the labels shown by your infotainment software.
  5. If an update changed the menu, read the update notes or the current digital manual rather than following screenshots from an older version.

Safety limits that settings cannot remove

  • Camera lenses have blind zones and cannot show every object behind or beside the vehicle.
  • Distance and object size can be difficult to judge on a wide-angle image.
  • Darkness, glare, rain, snow and condensation can reduce visibility even when the display is set correctly.
  • Lines are visual aids, not a guarantee that the vehicle will clear an obstacle or follow a predicted path.
  • Children, pets and low objects require direct checking around the vehicle.

Use the display settings to make the image readable and the overlays useful, then combine the screen with mirrors, direct observation and the operating limits in the vehicle manual.
