For a backpack with a hipbelt, shoulder harness, sternum strap and load lifters, adjust it in this order: load it, secure the hipbelt over the top of your hip bones, snug the shoulder straps, fine-tune the load lifters, then position the sternum strap. Walk with the pack and make small changes. If the harness still sits wrongly, check the pack’s torso setting and size rather than tightening the straps harder.
Before you adjust: use a realistic load
Put the items you expect to carry into the pack, then loosen the adjustment straps before putting it on. An empty backpack may sit differently from a loaded one. Loosen the compression straps too, if your pack has them; you can use them later to stabilize the load. Salomon’s fitting instructions begin by loosening the shoulder straps, hipbelt, chest strap, compression straps and load lifters.

Not every backpack has all these adjustments. Follow the steps for the features your pack actually has. A small casual backpack without a framed harness or hipbelt will not adjust like a framed hiking pack.

1. Set the hipbelt
Center the padded sections of the belt over the top of your hip bones, then buckle it snugly. It should feel secure without pinching. If it rides too high, it may restrict your waist; if it sits too low, the hip fins can rub against your thighs. On a framed hiking pack, the belt is a key part of supporting the load, so start here rather than asking the shoulder straps to do all the work.

2. Snug the shoulder straps
Pull the shoulder straps down and back until they rest close over your shoulders. They should stabilize the pack without cutting into your neck or digging into your shoulders. On a framed pack, they should not carry the bulk of the load. Check that the shoulder padding and strap attachment points line up with your shoulders; tightening cannot correct a harness or torso length that is the wrong size.
3. Fine-tune the load lifters, if fitted
Load lifters are the short straps connecting the upper shoulder harness to the pack. Tightening them draws the top of the pack closer to your body. Their angle is a guide, not a universal target: REI suggests roughly 45 degrees, while Helly Hansen recommends 30–45 degrees for multi-day packs and a slightly smaller angle for day packs. Pack design and your fit affect the right setting.

Tighten them only enough to bring the pack closer. If they pinch your shoulder joints or pull the shoulder harness up and away from your body, loosen them.
4. Position the sternum strap, if fitted
Place the chest strap at a comfortable height and tighten it just enough to keep the shoulder straps in a comfortable position. There is no single height that suits every person and pack. You should be able to breathe fully and move your arms without restriction.

5. Walk, check, and stabilize
Walk around with the loaded pack. Notice whether it feels balanced, whether anything rubs or presses uncomfortably, and whether you can breathe and move your arms freely. Make small adjustments rather than pulling every strap tight. Once the harness fits, snug the compression straps if your pack has them to keep the load stable. Avoid tightening them hard against fragile contents.
During a hike, you can make small adjustments if comfort changes. REI also describes trail adjustments as part of fitting a pack.

Check torso length and pack size if the fit stays wrong
Torso length is different from overall height. To measure it, find the C7 vertebra—the prominent bump at the base of your neck when you tilt your head forward—and measure down to the top of your iliac crest. If the backpack has adjustable suspension, set its back length to match the wearer.

Revisit the torso setting and pack size if the hipbelt is positioned correctly but the shoulder straps do not sit over your shoulders, the frame rises above your shoulders, or the belt sits on your stomach. REI notes that strap adjustments cannot compensate for an incorrectly set adjustable suspension. A different pack size or model, or a compatible harness or hipbelt where available, may be needed. Do not keep tightening straps to force a mismatched pack to fit.
