To protect a Yahoo account with codes from Google Authenticator, turn on 2-step verification in Yahoo Account Security, choose the authenticator-app method, scan the QR code Yahoo displays with Google Authenticator, and enter the current code back into Yahoo. Yahoo runs the enrollment; Google Authenticator only generates the one-time codes.
Before you start
Check these conditions before you open Yahoo’s settings, because two of them can block the option entirely.

- Two recovery methods must already be on the Yahoo account. Yahoo says the authenticator-app choice does not appear until at least two recovery methods are set up.
- Yahoo Account Key must be off. If you sign in to Yahoo with Account Key, disable it first. Yahoo requires this before 2-step verification can be enabled.
- Google Authenticator must be installed on the phone you will use for codes. Google describes the app as generating one-time verification codes for sites and apps that support authenticator-app verification, and says it can produce codes without internet or mobile service.
Set up the authenticator app in Yahoo
These steps follow Yahoo Help’s instructions for adding 2-step verification. Yahoo’s menus can change, so if a label differs slightly, look for the same option under the 2-step verification heading.

- Sign in to Yahoo and open the Yahoo Account Security page.
- Under “Ways of signing in,” select “2-step verification.”
- Choose “Authenticator app” as the verification method.
- Select Continue. Yahoo displays a QR code. Open Google Authenticator on your phone, tap the add (+) control, choose the option to scan a QR code, and scan the code on your screen.
- Back in Yahoo, select Continue, type the current six-digit…
What this setup does and does not do
The enrollment protects only the Yahoo account. It does not make Yahoo a sign-in option for your Google Account, and Google Authenticator does not hold your Yahoo password. Your Yahoo sign-in still requires the password, and the authenticator code is an extra step on top of it.

Offline generation has a limit. Google Authenticator can produce codes without a connection, but that does not mean every Yahoo function or recovery process works offline. Signing in to Yahoo still needs a working connection.
What to do when something goes wrong
The authenticator option is missing
Yahoo hides the option until the account has at least two recovery methods. Add the missing recovery methods from Yahoo Account Security, then return to 2-step verification.

Enrollment fails because Account Key is on
Turn off Yahoo Account Key, then retry the 2-step verification steps. Yahoo requires this order.

You lose or replace the phone
If you saved the emergency recovery code Yahoo may have shown during enrollment, use it to get back into the Yahoo account. Keep the code written down or printed in a place you can reach without the phone, but not stored where others can see it. If you did not save it and no other recovery method is available, you will need to go through Yahoo’s standard account recovery, which depends on the recovery methods you set up earlier.

Confusion with Google backup codes
Google backup codes belong to your Google Account’s own 2-Step Verification. They cannot be used as Yahoo recovery codes. Google says a backup code is a fallback when normal Google sign-in verification is unavailable, and each code stops working after one use.
Do not share the codes
Google’s account-security guidance warns against sharing verification codes. Anyone who has a live code and your password can sign in as you, so treat every code, including the emergency one, as private.

Security key as an alternative
Yahoo also offers a security key as a separate account-security method. It is not required for Google Authenticator enrollment. If you are choosing between methods, compare what each requires at sign-in, which device or recovery method each depends on, and how you would regain access if that device were lost.
