How to Add Taxonomy Images in WordPress

Add an image field to WordPress taxonomy terms, then render it in the appropriate archive or term listing with a plugin, ACF, or custom code.

To add an image to a WordPress category, tag, or custom taxonomy term, first give each term an image field, then make your theme display the saved image. A plugin or field framework can provide the dashboard interface; custom term metadata gives you more control but requires development work. In all three cases, saving an image does not automatically put it on the public site.

Choose where the image should appear

Decide whether the image belongs on a category archive, a custom taxonomy archive, or in a list or grid of terms. These are different display contexts: the right template and term object depend on which one you are building.

Also identify the taxonomy slug you want to support. Categories and tags are built-in taxonomies; a site may also register custom ones. If you are creating a custom taxonomy as part of the project, WordPress says to call register_taxonomy() on the init hook. That step is not needed just to add an image field to a taxonomy that already exists.

Pick a way to add the term image field

Approach Best fit What it provides
Dedicated term-image plugin A focused workflow for assigning media-library images to terms WP Term Images says it supports categories, tags, and other visible taxonomy terms, and that activation requires no additional setup. The theme still needs code to render the saved image.
Existing field framework A site that already uses a framework such as ACF, or needs several structured fields per term ACF documents adding fields, including an image field, to taxonomy terms through field-group location rules. The theme retrieves the field for the current term and outputs it.
Custom term metadata A project that needs controlled behavior and has development capacity to maintain it WordPress APIs store and retrieve term metadata, but the developer must supply the editing interface and front-end output.

Choose based on existing site dependencies, custom-taxonomy support, the number and type of fields, desired markup control, compatibility, and maintenance burden. These are examples rather than universal recommendations. Check compatibility with the site’s WordPress version, theme, and taxonomy configuration.

Use a plugin or ACF to manage images in the dashboard

Use WP Term Images

The WP Term Images plugin assigns media-library images to categories, tags, and other visible taxonomy terms. Its directory instructions say no additional setup is needed after activation. That covers the term-image workflow, not the theme’s display: your theme still needs to retrieve the saved image and render it in the intended location.

Use ACF

  1. Create an ACF field group and add an image field.
  2. Set the field group’s location rules to the taxonomy terms that should have the field.
  3. In the relevant term template, get the current term with get_queried_object(), then retrieve the field with get_field('image', $term).
  4. Use the returned value in your output, following ACF’s documented return format and the markup your design requires.

See ACF’s guide to adding fields to a taxonomy term for its field-group setup and retrieval example. Its example uses the returned image URL; if your implementation instead stores an attachment ID, use WordPress image functions to request an appropriate size.

Build a custom field with WordPress term metadata

WordPress’s term metadata APIs provide storage and retrieval, not a complete image-picker interface. A custom implementation must build both the admin workflow for selecting or uploading an image and the code that displays it.

  1. Register the metadata key if needed. register_term_meta() registers a meta key for a taxonomy and accepts metadata arguments. Registration is especially useful when metadata needs to be exposed through the REST API with a schema.
  2. Save the selected attachment. Store the media attachment ID as term metadata where possible, rather than hard-coding an image URL. An ID lets the theme request a suitable image size and use WordPress’s image-rendering helpers.
  3. Read the value in the correct context. Use the current term object or ID to retrieve its saved metadata with get_term_meta(). For writes, add_term_meta() adds a value and update_term_meta() updates or adds one.
  4. Render safely and handle missing images. Use WordPress attachment or image functions to produce suitable markup, escape output where appropriate, and omit or replace the image gracefully when a term has no saved value.

WordPress lists add_term_meta() as introduced in version 4.4.0 and register_term_meta() as introduced in version 4.9.8. These are API introduction versions, not claims about plugin compatibility; verify the target site’s version and test the complete workflow.

Display the image in the right template

The field’s location and the page being rendered determine how you retrieve and show the image. On a term archive, obtain the current term in that archive context; in a term listing, retrieve the image for each term being looped over. A field that stores an image but is never queried by the relevant template will not appear on the site.

For custom code, prefer an attachment ID over a fixed media URL when possible. That keeps image sizing under WordPress’s control. Use image-rendering helpers or properly escaped markup, and decide what the design should do for terms without an image: show nothing, use a fallback, or reserve a consistent space.
