What a WooCommerce upsell does
WooCommerce defines an upsell as a product recommended instead of the one currently being viewed. It is usually an alternative or upgrade—such as a more capable model or a higher-quality version—and is associated with the product detail page. In its “Set up Related Products, Up-Sells and Cross-Sells” documentation, WooCommerce describes up-sells as “products that you recommend instead of the currently viewed product.”

Choose an alternative that genuinely suits the shopper’s needs better, and make the added value clear in the product copy. There is no universal price difference that makes a recommendation an upsell, and WooCommerce’s documentation does not establish a guaranteed increase in sales or average order value.

Add an upsell in the product editor
The standard manual method links recommendations to each product. WooCommerce documents Linked Products in both its classic and block-based product editors; the exact screen layout can vary by editor.
#1 Best Overall
- In the WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce > Products and open the product whose page should carry the recommendation.
- In the classic editor, find Product Data and select Linked Products.
- In the Upsells field, search for a catalog product and select it. Add other relevant alternatives if needed.
- Click Update to save the product.
- Preview the product page on the active storefront and check whether the recommendation appears in the expected location.
In the block-based product editor, WooCommerce also documents a Linked Products section where you can search for and select products. That section is available across product types. For the classic-editor workflow and the theme-display caveat, see WooCommerce’s linked-products documentation; editor-specific steps are in its product-editor guide.
Choose the right recommendation type
Upsells, cross-sells, and related products are different features. Use the one that matches both the shopper’s context and where you want recommendations to appear.
Rank #2
| Type | What it recommends | Typical location or selection method |
|---|---|---|
| Upsells | An alternative or upgrade to the product being viewed | Product page; selected manually in that product’s Linked Products settings, with display dependent on theme behavior |
| Cross-sells | Complementary products that pair with items in the shopper’s cart | Commonly shown in the cart; can also be presented with a Cross-sells Product Collection block |
| Related products | Products sharing categories or tags with the current product | Generated automatically in WooCommerce’s documented core workflow rather than hand-picked in Linked Products |

Show upsells with a Product Collection block
If your storefront uses the relevant block-based setup, WooCommerce’s Product Collection block includes an Upsells collection for higher-end or premium versions. Linked products are added through the Edit Product screen. The same block offers a Cross-sells collection for items that pair with products in the cart. Collection availability and presentation depend on the active theme and template, so verify the result in the storefront rather than assuming a block will display identically everywhere.

Manual Linked Products are sufficient when you want to choose upsells individually for each product. An extension may be worth considering when you need more configurable selection rules, category-level strategies, or additional placements. These options require configuration beyond the basic manual link.
Product Recommendations
WooCommerce’s Product Recommendations extension supports strategies including category-based upsells, cross-sells, and frequently bought together recommendations. Its strategy documentation describes filtering and ranking factors such as popularity, rating, and freshness, then deploying recommendations in a product-page location. Check the current extension details and confirm that its placements fit your theme and store setup.
AI Product Recommendations
WooCommerce also documents an AI Product Recommendations plugin with AI and custom recommendation modes, rules, filters, and placements. Its documentation describes an API-key setting for AI recommendations. Confirm current feature availability, requirements, and cost before choosing it; it is a separate option, not a prerequisite for adding a manual upsell.
