How to Add Smarter Search to a Marketplace with Vanilla JavaScript

Build marketplace search with explicit state, useful filters, deliberate ranking, and shareable URLs—then measure whether local search still fits.

For a modest marketplace catalog that is already available in the browser, start with structured product data and explicit search state, then filter and sort it with JavaScript. Add fuzzy or multiword matching only when simple text matching falls short. Keep queries, filters, sorting, and pagination reproducible in the URL—and never rely on browser-side filters to protect private data.

What should marketplace search do?

A useful search view does more than find a word in a product title. It should help buyers find relevant items, narrow results with meaningful filters, understand the active sort order, and return to the same view after a refresh or when they share a link.

For a small catalog loaded into the page, you can build this without a front-end framework. Keep the product records separate from the rendered HTML, and make search behavior a transformation of those records: query matching, filtering, sorting, then pagination. This makes the results easier to test and keeps the controls from depending on whatever happens to be in the DOM.

How should you model products and search state?

Use stable product records

Give each item a stable identifier and explicit fields, for example id, title, brand, category, description, tags, price, and available. Search only fields that help a buyer decide whether an item is relevant. Indexing long descriptions alongside titles can dilute relevance and add work.

Normalize text consistently for case and whitespace. Make deliberate choices about accents, punctuation, identifiers, and locale-specific behavior; a product code or model number may need different handling from descriptive text. Do not silently discard distinctions that buyers rely on.

Keep controls in explicit state

Represent the active query, selected category or brand, price bounds, availability, sort key, and page as application state. Derive the visible results from that state rather than inferring it from rendered cards. A predictable pipeline is:

  1. Match the query against the intended searchable fields.
  2. Apply structured filters such as category, brand, price, and availability.
  3. Sort the remaining records by the selected key, with a stable tie-breaker such as product ID.
  4. Paginate the sorted results and render the page.

For a small catalog, a deterministic case-insensitive substring match is a reasonable starting point. Add more sophisticated matching in response to actual query behavior, not because a search library offers more options.

How can you handle typos and multiword searches?

Substring matching is simple and predictable, but it will not usually find a misspelled term. Fuse.js is one option when you need fuzzy matching across structured fields. Its extended-search syntax also supports exact, substring, prefix, suffix, inverse, and other matching operators, which can express rules more precisely than one generic text check: Fuse.js Extended Search.

Choose a matching model that fits the query

A multiword query such as “blue wool coat” can be treated as one fuzzy pattern or as separate terms. Fuse.js token search splits a query into terms, fuzzy-matches them, and uses BM25-style inverse-document-frequency weighting. Its documentation identifies search bars, document search, and autocomplete as use cases. It also notes that for queries that are usually one word or a short phrase, ordinary fuzzy search is simpler and faster. See Fuse.js Token Search.

Decide whether every term must match, whether terms may match different fields, and whether word order matters. Those choices affect what buyers see; they are not merely technical settings. Test representative searches from your catalog, including model numbers, short queries, misspellings, and terms that appear only in descriptions.

Rank fields deliberately

A match in a product title or brand may deserve more weight than one buried in a long description. Fuse.js documents field weights for token-search scoring and result limits that can help when only the top matches are needed. Set weights based on buyer intent and validate them against real searches rather than assuming a particular ranking is universally best.

How should filters and sorting work?

Use structured filters for properties buyers can identify, such as category, brand, price range, and availability. Build those options from actual catalog data rather than inventing categories that products do not support. Show active filters near the results and let buyers remove an individual filter or clear all filters.

If your data source provides result counts for facets, show them only when they accurately reflect the current query and other active filters. Counts can clarify the effect of a choice, but stale or misleading counts make search harder to trust. Make the selected sort order visible and define what happens when two items share the same sort value.

How can search links preserve the result view?

Put the query and important controls in URL parameters so that refresh, browser back and forward, and shared links can restore the same search view. The browser’s URL.search property represents the query-string portion of a URL, while URL.searchParams provides an interface for working with parameters. MDN notes that updating searchParams can change serialization: for example, a space may appear as + where the previous URL used %20. See MDN: URL search property.

Treat the parsed parameters as input to validated canonical state, not as trusted values. Decide how to handle empty values, repeated parameters, unknown filters, invalid price ranges, and out-of-range page numbers. The URL’s exact character encoding may vary while its decoded search meaning remains the same.

When are autocomplete suggestions useful?

Suggestions help buyers express a query; they are not the search results themselves. Keep their role clear: selecting a suggestion should set or run a query, while a product hit should be identified as a product. Suggestions can come from a curated list, category-aware terms, or searches collected by the service, but do not present them as personalized unless they actually are.

Algolia’s Query Suggestions documentation describes controls including popularity ranking based on recent searches, minimum letters, minimum hit thresholds, category data, and duplicate or unhelpful suggestion controls. It also notes that availability can depend on plan. These are documented options in that product, not requirements for every marketplace. See Algolia Query Suggestions.

A small implementation can begin with curated suggestions or locally collected search terms. Make suggestions useful without forcing buyers to choose one before they can see results.

When should search move beyond the browser?

There is no universal catalog-size cutoff for switching from local search to a hosted service. The decision depends on catalog size and update rate, indexing needs, relevance features, target-device responsiveness, whether the catalog is safe to ship to the browser, and operational constraints.

Measure the actual workload

Fuse.js says indexing work grows with list size, searchable key count, and field length; search is linear in indexed entries, and query length and threshold also affect performance. Its published measurements are illustrative project benchmarks, not predictions for a marketplace. In Fuse.js’s v7.4.0 performance guide, under the page’s test conditions, 10,000 generated records with three keys took about 28 ms to index and 182 ms for token search; 50,000 took about 147 ms and 963 ms; and 100,000 took about 299 ms and 2,061 ms. The project cautions that outcomes vary with hardware, key count, and value length. See Fuse.js Performance.

Benchmark with representative records, fields, queries, and target devices before changing architecture. Fuse.js documents prebuilt indexes and Web Worker use as options when index construction or search work affects responsiveness. A result limit may also help when the interface needs only the leading matches.

Consider a hosted search API when its capabilities justify the dependency

A hosted service may be appropriate when the marketplace needs indexing workflows, richer relevance controls, facets, synonyms, or suggestions that would be costly to operate locally. Algolia’s vanilla JavaScript SiteSearch guide describes initialization with an application ID, API key, index name, and mappings for primary and secondary text, URL, and image attributes. It also documents CDN bundles and advises using minified bundles to reduce size. Check current package versions and plan details before implementation: Algolia SiteSearch with Vanilla JS.

Why client-side filters cannot protect private data

A browser-controlled filter shapes the results a buyer sees; it does not establish permission to access the underlying records. Do not ship confidential or tenant-specific records to the browser and expect a hidden control or front-end filter to keep them secret. Enforce access rules in trusted backend logic or an equivalently secured mechanism.

Algolia’s filter guidance warns that users may be able to search without a front-end parameter filter when it is not bound to a secured key, and that filters should not be used to hide data that must remain secret. See Algolia Support: How do I add a filter to my search?.
