Linux Commands: 8 Short Names for Everyday Tasks

A beginner-friendly guide to eight compact Linux commands, with simple examples and a clear distinction between inspecting files and changing them.

Start with eight short commands, each tied to a job: pwd tells you where you are, ls shows what is there, and cd takes you somewhere else. For files, remember cp to copy, mv to move or rename, and rm to remove. cat displays file contents; grep searches text. The names are brief, but the safest way to learn them is to connect each one to its action and check paths before changing files.

Find your place and navigate

pwd: Where am I?

pwd prints the shell’s current working directory. Use it when you are unsure which folder a relative path will refer to. GNU Coreutils 9.11 documents pwd in its manual.

pwd

ls: What is here?

ls lists directory contents. To make each entry appear on its own line, use ls -1, an option described in the ls(1) manual page.

ls -1

cd: Go to another directory

cd changes the shell’s current directory. Unlike the other commands here, it is a shell builtin: the shell must update its own working directory. For example, cd Documents attempts to enter a directory named Documents inside the current directory. The Calvin University Linux quick reference groups it with navigation commands.

cd Documents

Read a file or search its text

cat: Print file contents

cat concatenates files and writes their contents to standard output, so it can display a short text file in the terminal:

cat notes.txt

For a large file, use a pager so you can read it a screen at a time rather than sending all its contents into the terminal at once. A beginner-oriented example of cat appears in the Calvin University quick reference.

grep: Find matching text

grep searches for text matching a pattern. A simple starting example searches a file for the word error:

grep error app.log

The Calvin University quick reference introduces it for pattern searches. Its detailed behavior depends on the pattern and implementation; consult the documentation for the version on your system when you need more than a basic search.

Copy, move, rename, or remove files

cp: Copy

cp copies files. With two filenames, GNU cp copies the first file to the second, as described in its invocation documentation.

cp draft.txt draft-backup.txt

mv: Move or rename

mv moves files, and using it with a new name in the same directory renames a file. GNU documents these basic operations in its overview of basic file operations.

mv draft.txt archive/draft.txt

rm: Remove

rm removes files or directories. It can make a lasting change, so inspect the path before pressing Enter; a misspelled or unintended target may not be recoverable from the command itself. GNU describes its removal operations in the same basic operations documentation.

Remember the commands by their jobs

Task Command Memory cue Effect
Check location pwd Print working directory Displays information
List contents ls List Displays information
Change location cd Change directory Changes the shell’s current directory
Display file text cat Think of viewing a file’s contents Outputs content
Search text grep Search for a match Finds matching text
Copy a file cp Copy Creates a copy
Move or rename mv Move Changes a file’s location or name
Remove rm Remove Deletes a file or directory

The most direct memory links are ls to list, cp to copy, mv to move, and rm to remove. Keep the navigation pair together: pwd answers “where am I?” and cd changes where the shell is working.

Check before commands that change files

pwd, ls, cat, and grep primarily inspect or display information. cp creates a copy, mv changes location or name, and rm removes a target. Before a file-changing command, verify both the command and the path; take particular care with rm.

These descriptions are grounded in GNU Coreutils documentation for the covered utilities; its manual identifies itself as authoritative for those utilities. That does not make every detail universal: available shells, command implementations, options, and distributions can differ. cd is a shell builtin, and the beginner examples for cat and grep here are task-level guidance rather than a complete account of their options.
