How to Add Search to a Static Astro Blog: Pagefind, MiniSearch, and Hosted Options

For most static Astro blogs, use Pagefind through the astro-pagefind integration. It generates a search index during the static build, so visitors can search published pages without a search server, database, or runtime API. The integration also supports a supplied search component, base paths, multiple search instances, view transitions, and index configuration.

Choose a custom JSON index with MiniSearch when you need your own ranking rules, weighted fields, normalization, or interface. Use a hosted crawler or search API only when the content volume or relevance requirements justify an external dependency. That option adds remote requests and creates a second index that can drift from the project.

What static Astro search actually needs

A static Astro site produces HTML and assets at build time. There is no application server waiting for a query, so a conventional database-backed search endpoint is not part of the deployment. Search can still work by shipping an index as static files and executing the query in the visitor’s browser.

The build must therefore do two jobs: render the pages that should be searchable and create a representation of their text and metadata. The browser then downloads the relevant index data, applies the search algorithm locally, and displays links to matching pages. This keeps deployment simple and avoids operating a separate search service.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Astro’s data-fetching guidance is important here: deployed Astro components fetch data once at build time. If you want to fetch search data repeatedly in the browser, you must add a client-side script or framework component. A generated JSON endpoint is still static output; it does not require a backend after deployment.

Choose the implementation that fits your blog

Approach Deployment Index freshness Ranking control Privacy and operations Interface effort
Pagefind with astro-pagefind Static index files generated during the Astro build Regenerated automatically whenever the site is built Pagefind defaults and configuration Queries run against files delivered with the site; no search backend to operate Low: use Pagefind’s component UI or the integration component
Custom JSON plus MiniSearch Static JSON endpoint and browser-side MiniSearch code Regenerated from the content collection at build time Custom fields, weights, tokenization, and ranking No runtime search server, but you maintain the index schema and client code High: you build the search component and result presentation
Hosted crawler or search API External service and remote requests Depends on crawler or synchronization schedule Depends on the provider; the implementation report describes less algorithm control Requires remote operations, requests, and usually service credentials Varies, but integration and synchronization must be maintained

For a normal blog, Pagefind is the practical starting point. Move to MiniSearch when the default ranking or interface is the actual limitation, not merely because a custom index is possible. A hosted service is a deliberate operational choice, not a prerequisite for search.

Option 1: Add Pagefind with astro-pagefind

Install the integration

From the Astro project directory, install the integration:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
npm i astro-pagefind

Open astro.config.mjs (or the equivalent TypeScript configuration), import the integration, and add it to the integrations array:

import { defineConfig } from 'astro/config';
import pagefind from 'astro-pagefind';

export default defineConfig({
  integrations: [pagefind()]
});

If your configuration already contains integrations, keep them and append pagefind() rather than replacing the existing array.

Build the index

Run the same static build command you use for deployment, normally:

npm run build

The integration builds the Pagefind index from the generated site. The key requirement is that pages intended for search exist as prerendered HTML at that point. A route that only exists behind a runtime server, or content excluded from the build, cannot be indexed by a static build step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add the search interface

The integration supplies a search component, and Pagefind provides a component-based UI for new users. The Pagefind component UI was introduced in Pagefind 1.5.0. Add the component to the layout or page where search should appear, following the component import and usage shown by the version of astro-pagefind installed in your project.

Keeping the search field in a shared layout gives readers a consistent entry point. A dedicated search page is useful when you want more room for result excerpts, filters, or explanatory text. You can also render more than one Pagefind instance when a design needs separate search controls, provided each instance is configured for its intended location.

Check a subdirectory deployment

A site deployed at the domain root and a site deployed under a path such as /docs/ resolve assets differently. Verify the integration’s base-path support in the same environment used for production. Test the generated search assets and the search component from the deployed subdirectory, not only from a local root URL. A base-path mistake commonly produces a visible input with no results because the browser requests the index from the wrong location.

Account for view transitions

If the site uses Astro view transitions, make sure the search component is initialized correctly after navigation. Pagefind integration documentation includes view-transition support; use that behavior rather than assuming a component mounted on the first page will automatically survive every transition. Test navigation from a page with no results to a page with results and back again.

Make Pagefind results useful

Search quality starts with the HTML that gets indexed. Give every article a meaningful title, avoid rendering navigation or repeated boilerplate as the dominant text, and ensure the main article content is present in the generated document. Search snippets are only as understandable as the source text surrounding each match.

  • Keep article titles specific enough to distinguish similar posts.
  • Use headings for topic changes so snippets land near useful context.
  • Do not hide the complete article body behind a client-only request if it must be indexed.
  • Build after content changes; the index is produced from the build output, not continuously from your editor.

Pagefind’s defaults are intentionally convenient rather than a promise that every site has identical relevance. If readers consistently need title matches to outrank body matches, or if you need domain-specific fields such as product, version, or category weights, that is the point at which a custom index becomes attractive.

Option 2: Build a JSON index and query it with MiniSearch

The custom route separates indexing from presentation. Astro emits a JSON file during the build, and browser code loads that file and passes the records to MiniSearch. You control which fields are included, how text is normalized, and how matches are ranked.

Create a static endpoint

Place an endpoint in the project’s pages directory, for example src/pages/search.json.ts. The endpoint loads an Astro content collection and returns records containing the fields your interface needs. The collection name below is an example; use the collection defined by your project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
import { getCollection } from 'astro:content';

export async function GET() {
  const entries = await getCollection('blog');
  const records = entries.map((entry) => ({
    slug: entry.slug,
    title: entry.data.title,
    body: entry.body
  }));

  return new Response(JSON.stringify(records), {
    headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' }
  });
}

The endpoint runs at build time for a static output, so the resulting JSON is deployed as a file. Keep the payload limited to fields needed by search and result rendering; shipping unrelated frontmatter increases download size without improving matching.

Clean Markdown and MDX before indexing

Raw MDX is not reader-facing text. JSX components, table syntax, links, and formatting markers can leak into snippets or become accidental search terms. Convert the body to plain text before writing the JSON record. Preserve word boundaries when removing tags, and decide explicitly whether code blocks should be searchable. A documentation site may want code terms indexed; a general blog may prefer prose.

Load and query in the browser

Your client-side script fetches the generated JSON once, creates a MiniSearch index, and renders results as the query changes. MiniSearch lets you declare searchable fields and assign different weights, so a title match can outrank a body-only match. It also lets you choose text processing appropriate to the site’s vocabulary.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Because this is a custom interface, implement the details Pagefind would otherwise provide: an empty-query state, a no-results message, keyboard focus handling, result links, loading and error states, and a way to close or clear the search panel. If the endpoint is fetched after hydration, keep the initial page usable while the index loads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When MiniSearch is worth the maintenance

  • You need title, category, author, or version fields with different weights.
  • You need a bespoke result card, filter controls, or a design that the packaged UI cannot express.
  • You need to normalize domain terminology or apply custom tokenization.
  • You are willing to maintain the endpoint schema, browser code, and accessibility behavior.

The trade-off is ongoing code ownership. Every content-model change can require an index change, and every UI change can affect loading, keyboard behavior, or result rendering.

Option 3: Use a hosted or crawler-based search service

A remote provider crawls the site or receives records from a synchronization job, then answers queries through an external API. This can be appropriate for a large content set or advanced relevance features that would be expensive to implement in the browser.

The documented implementation experience identifies three costs. Requests are slower than querying data already delivered with the page, ranking control is limited by the provider’s algorithm, and the remote index becomes a second source of truth. A newly published or edited article can exist in the Astro project while the crawler still serves an older version.

Choose this model only after identifying a requirement that static search cannot meet. Plan how credentials are protected, how the index is rebuilt or crawled, how failed synchronization is detected, and how development and preview environments are kept separate from production data.

Build and deployment checklist

  1. Decide the scope. List the routes, collections, languages, and fields that should be searchable.
  2. Make content prerendered. Confirm that every target article produces HTML during the static build.
  3. Select an index strategy. Use Pagefind for the shortest path; use MiniSearch for custom ranking or UI; select hosted search only for a justified external capability.
  4. Install and configure. For Pagefind, install astro-pagefind and add pagefind() to the Astro integrations array.
  5. Build locally. Run npm run build and inspect the generated output for the index files or JSON endpoint.
  6. Test the deployed base path. Open the production URL under its real root or subdirectory and run queries that should return known articles.
  7. Test content changes. Edit a title and body, rebuild, and verify that the new text appears while old text disappears as expected.
  8. Test failure states. Check an empty query, a misspelled term, no matches, a slow load, keyboard navigation, and a failed index request.

Troubleshooting common failures

The search box renders but returns nothing

First inspect the browser’s network requests. If the index request points to the domain root while the site is deployed in a subdirectory, correct the base-path configuration and rebuild. If the request succeeds, verify that the target pages were prerendered and included in the static output.

Results contain MDX syntax or broken snippets

This affects custom JSON indexes when raw source is sent to MiniSearch. Convert Markdown and MDX to plain text before indexing, remove JSX and table syntax, and preserve spaces where markup was removed.

New articles are missing

A static index does not update while the development source changes. Run the production build again and redeploy the generated files. With a hosted crawler, check the crawler or synchronization schedule instead; its separate index may lag behind the project.

Search stops working after a view transition

Confirm that the Pagefind component is using the integration’s view-transition support, or reinitialize a custom MiniSearch component after the new page is mounted. Test both direct loads and client-side navigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The custom index is too large

Remove fields that are not searched or displayed, shorten stored excerpts, and avoid shipping duplicate rendered HTML. If the browser payload remains inappropriate for the site, reassess whether Pagefind’s index format or a hosted service better fits the content volume.

Practical recommendation

Start with Pagefind and astro-pagefind for a conventional static Astro blog. It aligns indexing with the build, avoids a backend, and gives you a ready-made component UI. Keep the pages prerendered, verify the base path, and test the generated index in the deployed environment.

Adopt MiniSearch only when you can name the control you need—field weighting, custom normalization, or a distinctive interface. Build the JSON endpoint from Astro content at build time, clean MDX into plain text, and treat the browser component as production code that needs loading, error, accessibility, and navigation states.

Use hosted search when scale or advanced relevance genuinely outweighs slower remote queries and the operational risk of an index that can drift from the current project. For most blogs, a build-time index keeps search simpler, faster to deploy, and easier to reason about.
