What a RedM resource is and what the server needs
A RedM resource is a self-contained folder of scripts, configuration files and other assets that the server can start. The server does not load a resource merely because its files exist on disk. It discovers the folder under resources, reads the folder’s manifest, and starts it only when the configuration requests it.
Every resource must have a manifest at its top level. The current format is a Lua file named fxmanifest.lua. Older resources may contain __resource.lua; that format is outdated and the console can flag it as deprecated. If the manifest is missing, misnamed or buried in an extra directory, the resource will not start.

Cfx.re’s manifest documentation covers RedM as well as FiveM. For RedM, the manifest identifies the game as rdr3. The documentation also says that an fx_version declaration is mandatory for RedM. A manifest can target both RedM and FiveM with a games declaration, but a resource intended only for RedM normally uses game 'rdr3'.
Before you upload: check the resource package
Do these checks on your computer before transferring anything:
- Find the actual resource folder. The folder you eventually place under
resourcesshould containfxmanifest.luadirectly, not one level deeper. - Read the author’s installation notes. They may list required framework resources, database wrappers, shared libraries or a specific start order. A resource can be packaged correctly and still fail when one of those dependencies is absent.
- Keep the folder name in mind. The name used in
server.cfgmust exactly match the directory name, including capitalization. Choose a simple name without accidentally changing it during extraction. - Check for duplicate nesting. ZIP files often extract as
resources/[scripts]/resource-name/resource-name/fxmanifest.lua. In that case, move the inner folder up so the manifest is at the resource’s top level. - Do not copy obsolete manifest switches into new work. Current CfxLua uses Lua 5.4, and the
lua54manifest switch is deprecated. Many older RedM repositories also contain anrdr3_warningline left over from the prerelease period; do not add that line to a new resource.
Choose an upload method

These methods differ only in how files arrive on the machine. Manifest requirements, folder naming, dependency order and ensure lines are the same.
Step 1: Put the resource in the resources directory
- Stop the server before changing files when your host recommends doing so. A full stop prevents a restart from racing with an upload and gives you a clean test.
- Open the server’s main data directory and then open
resources. Do not place the resource besideserver.cfgor in a client-side RedM installation. - Upload or extract the complete resource folder. A valid final layout looks like
resources/[scripts]/my_resource/fxmanifest.lua. Bracketed groups such as[core]and[scripts]are commonly used to organize resources; the server scans those grouped subfolders automatically. - Open the folder you intend to start and verify that
fxmanifest.luais immediately inside it. If you see another folder before the manifest, correct the nesting. - Preserve the package’s relative paths. If the resource includes client, server, shared or asset files referenced by its manifest, moving individual files out of their directories can make those references fail.
How bracketed folders affect the name
The bracketed directory is an organizational group, not normally the name you put in an ensure line. For resources/[scripts]/my_resource, the resource name is my_resource. You generally write ensure my_resource, not ensure [scripts]/my_resource. The name must still match the actual resource folder exactly.

Step 2: Verify or create the fxmanifest.lua file
Open the manifest in a plain-text editor. A RedM manifest needs a RedM game declaration and a mandatory fx_version. A minimal shape, based on the Cfx.re format, is:
fx_version 'cerulean'
game 'rdr3'cerulean is used in the documented cross-platform example and in a third-party RedM example. The exact currently supported fx_version values for RedM should be checked against the live Cfx.re documentation before authoring a new resource; do not change a working package’s version casually.
A resource’s real manifest will normally contain additional declarations for scripts and assets. Do not invent filenames: keep the entries supplied by the resource author, and make sure each referenced file exists at the stated path. If the package uses the old __resource.lua format, look for an updated release or follow the author’s migration instructions rather than blindly renaming the file. The filename alone does not convert old manifest syntax.

fx_version 'cerulean'
games { 'rdr3', 'gta5' }Only use a multi-game declaration when the resource actually supports both games. A FiveM-only resource is not made RedM-compatible by changing one line; its scripts and APIs must support RedM as well.
Step 3: Register the resource in server.cfg
Open the server’s server.cfg in a text editor or the host’s configuration editor. Add an ensure directive using the resource folder’s exact name:
ensure my_resourceThe server reads the name after ensure and looks for a matching resource folder. Matching is case-sensitive. If the directory is named My_Resource, then ensure my_resource may not find it. Renaming the folder to a stable lowercase name and using that same spelling everywhere can prevent avoidable mistakes, but do not rename a resource if its own configuration or documentation requires a particular name.
Keep one clear directive per resource. If an old start or duplicate ensure line already exists, remove the duplicate rather than stacking multiple commands for the same folder. The directive belongs in the server configuration that this particular instance actually launches; editing a backup or a different profile has no effect.

Step 4: Put dependencies before the resource
Resources start in the order their ensure lines appear. A script that calls a framework, database wrapper or shared library must come after that dependency. For example:
ensure framework_resource
ensure database_wrapper
ensure my_resourceThe names above are illustrative placeholders for the real folder names supplied by your package. Replace them with the exact names on disk. If the author lists several prerequisites, install and register each one before the dependent script. A missing dependency is usually identified in the console when the resource starts.
How to decide the order
- List every required resource from the package documentation.
- Find each dependency’s actual folder name under
resources. - Place foundational frameworks and shared libraries first.
- Place database wrappers or connection resources before scripts that use them.
- Place the new gameplay or utility resource after all of its prerequisites.
- Keep unrelated resources in their existing order unless their documentation specifies a relationship.
Changing order cannot repair a resource that is missing, incompatible or syntactically broken, but correct order prevents a valid script from starting before the services it needs.
Step 5: Restart the complete server
Save server.cfg, finish all file transfers, and perform a full server restart. A hot reload can leave an old resource state in memory and hide packaging or dependency problems. A complete stop-and-start tests the same sequence that players will encounter after a normal reboot.
Watch the startup console from the beginning. A successful start should show the resource being discovered and started without an error for its manifest, dependencies or scripts. If the server starts but the feature is not visible in-game, continue reading the console rather than assuming that the upload worked.
Diagnose a resource that will not load

Use the first meaningful error
Startup logs can contain follow-on warnings after an initial failure. Begin with the earliest error naming the resource, file and line. Fixing a missing manifest or dependency first can remove several later messages. Record the exact spelling shown by the console; it often reveals a capitalization mismatch that is easy to miss in a file manager.

Control panels vary, so button labels and paths differ by provider. The reliable sequence is:

If a panel offers a one-click “install resource” feature, still verify the resulting path, manifest and configuration. Automation can upload files, but it cannot know whether a package needs a particular framework or whether its folder name was changed during extraction.
Manual-install checklist
- Use the correct server credentials and confirm that you are editing the intended instance.
- Transfer all files, including hidden files if the package contains them.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before restarting.
- Check that the server account can read the uploaded files.
- Confirm the directory structure with the manifest at the resource root.
- Add one accurately spelled
ensureline. - Restart and save the first relevant console error if the resource fails.
Safe update and removal procedure
Updating an existing resource
- Read the new release’s notes for changed dependencies or configuration.
- Back up the current resource folder and its configuration files.
- Stop the server or follow the host’s maintenance procedure.
- Replace the resource files without creating an extra nested directory.
- Keep the existing
ensureline if the folder name has not changed. - Install or update newly required dependencies and place them before the resource.
- Restart fully and inspect the console for manifest, syntax and dependency errors.
Removing a resource
- Stop the server.
- Remove or archive the resource folder from
resources. - Delete its
ensureline from the activeserver.cfg. - Check whether other resources depend on it before restarting.
- Restart and confirm that no remaining resource reports it as missing.
RedM-specific manifest points to remember
fxmanifest.luais the current manifest filename;__resource.luais an older, deprecated format.- Use
game 'rdr3'for a RedM-targeted resource. - The Cfx.re documentation states that
fx_versionis mandatory for RedM. - A
games { 'rdr3', 'gta5' }declaration is appropriate only for a resource that supports both platforms. - The
lua54switch is deprecated under current CfxLua. - Do not carry prerelease-era
rdr3_warninglines into newly authored manifests.
Final verification before inviting players
- Confirm the resource folder is under the active server’s
resourcesdirectory. - Confirm
fxmanifest.luais at the folder’s top level. - Confirm the manifest identifies
rdr3and includes the requiredfx_version. - Confirm every dependency is installed and listed earlier in
server.cfg. - Confirm the
ensurename matches the folder exactly, including capitalization. - Restart the full server rather than relying on a hot reload.
- Read the console from startup and resolve the first meaningful error.
- Join with a test account and verify the resource’s actual feature, not just its presence in the log.
Once those checks pass, the resource is installed through the normal RedM loading path: the server scans the resource directory, reads its manifest, starts prerequisites in order, and then starts the resource named by ensure.
