How to Add Picture-in-Picture to a Live Stream

Add a webcam or other video source as a picture-in-picture inset in OBS, position it over your main video, and check the source and device setup before going live.

To put picture-in-picture into the broadcast so every viewer sees it, build the layout in streaming software such as OBS: add your main video source, add a second source for the inset, then resize and position that source above the main image. If you mean a floating player visible only while you use another app, that is a playback-device feature—not a change to the live broadcast.

Broadcast PiP or a floating player: which do you mean?

A broadcast inset is part of the composed video sent to viewers. For example, you can place your webcam over a game or screen capture. Create that composition in OBS by combining sources in a scene. OBS describes scenes and source positioning in its Sources Guide.

A floating player is different: it stays on top of other apps on the viewer’s device and does not add an inset to your stream. Android’s documentation describes picture-in-picture as an app/platform playback feature, not a way to author a broadcast layout: Use picture-in-picture (PiP) | Views.

How to add a broadcast inset in OBS

  1. Create or select the scene that will go live. In OBS, scenes contain the sources that make up the broadcast.
  2. Add the main video source. This might be a display or game capture, a window, a camera, or another video input already available to OBS.
  3. Add the inset source. For a webcam, add a Video Capture Source and select the device in its properties. OBS’s Video Capture Sources documentation covers webcams and capture cards as inputs.
  4. Place the inset over the main image. Select the second source in the preview canvas, resize it, and drag it into a corner or another suitable position. Check the source order: the inset must be layered above the main image to appear on top.
  5. Preview the scene before going live. Confirm that the inset is visible, important content is not hidden, and the intended video and audio sources are active.

OBS’s How do I add my webcam? guide explains adding a webcam source and positioning and resizing it. The OBS documentation linked here was published in 2022; interface placement and labels may have changed in later releases, so check the labels in your installed version.

Choose the right source for the inset

Source When it fits What to check
USB webcam A straightforward option for a presenter camera, if the device is supported by your computer and OBS. Add it as a Video Capture Source and select the webcam in its properties. See OBS’s Video Capture Sources documentation.
External HDMI camera or device Useful when the second image comes from an external video device. A capture card may be needed to make the HDMI input available to the computer. Drivers, operating-system support, and the device’s video mode and format affect compatibility. OBS notes Windows DirectShow support and, for Blackmagic devices, the need to match mode and format to the media and intended output. Check the chosen device’s compatibility details in OBS’s documentation.
Browser Source For a URL or local file, such as a web-based overlay or visual element. It loads web content into a scene; it is not a physical camera input. OBS documents Browser Source availability on Windows and macOS and through official packages on Linux: Browser Source.
Existing screen or window source When the video you want in the inset is already available to OBS as a screen or window input. Confirm that the source is available and compatible with your operating system and OBS setup. A capture card is not required for every PiP layout.

Size and position the inset so it stays useful

  • Keep the inset clear of important game, presentation, or screen content.
  • Check that the inset sits above the main source in the scene’s source order; otherwise it may be hidden behind it.
  • Use a preview to verify the composition before going live, especially after changing sources or their order.
  • Match the input format to what the device, capture hardware, and streaming setup support. Resolution and frame-rate compatibility vary by device and platform; do not assume an external camera or capture card supports every format.

Common PiP problems and what to check

  • The inset does not appear: Confirm the source is enabled and positioned above the main image in the source order. Check that the intended device is selected in the source properties.
  • The wrong camera or device appears: Reopen the Video Capture Source properties and select the intended input. If the device is not listed, check its connection, driver, operating-system support, and OBS compatibility.
  • The external HDMI feed is unavailable or displays incorrectly: Verify that the capture device supports the connected camera’s mode and format, and that its driver and platform are supported. For Blackmagic devices, OBS specifically notes matching mode and format to the media and intended output.
  • A web overlay is being treated like a camera: Browser Source loads a URL or local file; use a Video Capture Source for a physical webcam or compatible capture device.
  • The inset covers essential information: Reposition or resize it in the preview, then check the full scene again before going live.
