Fix the page’s social metadata first, then use the affected platform’s own inspector to see what it extracted and refresh its stored preview. Updating your website does not necessarily update a preview already cached by a social network—and on LinkedIn, refreshing the URL does not change posts already published with it.
Why a link preview shows the wrong title or description
A share preview is assembled from information the platform extracts from the linked page. The title shown in your browser tab or a search-result snippet is not proof that a social crawler received the same title. LinkedIn says its share box uses Open Graph Protocol (OGP) and/or oEmbed data for a URL’s title, description, and image; missing metadata can prevent content from being pulled or lead to other page content appearing instead. LinkedIn’s troubleshooting guidance explains the inputs it uses.

A stale preview has two distinct possible causes: the live page still publishes incorrect metadata, or the platform is showing information it previously stored. Check what the platform extracted before deciding which one you have.

- Inspect the returned page source. Open the exact URL you share and view its HTML source, or inspect the social-sharing settings in your CMS. Check the metadata in the HTML response, not only the visible page title.
- Verify the page-specific Open Graph values. LinkedIn lists
og:title,og:description,og:image, andog:urlamong the fields for its sharing module. Confirm that the title and description contain the intended text and thatog:urlidentifies the intended page. LinkedIn’s sharing documentation lists these fields. - Check the canonical URL. Make sure it does not point to a different page from the one you intend to share. A mismatch between the shared URL, canonical URL, and
og:urlcan make it unclear which page the crawler should treat as the source. - Check how your CMS generates tags. Review the page-level social fields and the plugin or theme that emits metadata. If defaults and page-specific values conflict, inspect the final HTML to see which tags are actually present.
Do not assume that editing a CMS field changed the live response: inspect the generated source after saving and publishing.

Inspect the URL with the platform showing the problem
Paste the URL into LinkedIn Post Inspector. Review the preview and extracted data. LinkedIn describes the tool as a way to refresh URL data and investigate what its content-ingestion process extracted. If the inspector itself shows the wrong title or description, fix the page response before treating the issue as a stale display cache.
Troubleshooting guides commonly point to Meta’s Sharing Debugger and its “Scrape Again” action to fetch a URL again. Interfaces can change, so confirm the current action in Meta’s tool. Do not assume that a refresh on Facebook also refreshes LinkedIn, X, Slack, or another service.

Other platforms
Use the affected service’s own preview inspector or refresh mechanism if it offers one. The extraction rules and stored previews are platform-specific; there is no universal refresh that updates every network.

Refresh the preview, then share again
- Correct the live metadata and confirm it is present in the returned HTML.
- Run the URL through the inspector for the platform where the preview is wrong.
- If the inspector still extracts the wrong values, return to the page source and check for incorrect, missing, or conflicting metadata. A crawler can consider multiple metadata candidates, validate them, and select among them, so verify what the crawler receives rather than relying on the tags you expected to take priority. LinkedIn’s engineering account describes that selection process.
- If the inspector shows the corrected values, create a new share and check its preview.
LinkedIn explicitly says that Post Inspector’s refreshed information applies to new posts: “The preview for any existing posts with this URL will remain the same.” Refreshing the URL therefore is not a fix for the preview embedded in an already-published LinkedIn post. Use a query-string workaround only with care
Some secondary troubleshooting guides suggest adding a harmless query parameter to the shared URL so a service may treat it as a different URL. This is not a standards-based guarantee, and it changes the address being shared. Before trying it, check that your site handles the altered URL correctly and consider effects on analytics, routing, canonicalization, and duplicate content. Prefer the platform’s own inspector and refresh workflow.
Troubleshoot by what the inspector shows
