You can run a 24/7 YouTube video stream from an Indian VPS by looping a compatible video through an encoder such as FFmpeg and sending it to YouTube Live. The lowest advertised VPS price is not necessarily the lowest workable cost: your video bitrate drives monthly outbound transfer, and continuous encoding can demand much more CPU than simply forwarding a pre-encoded file. Choose the stream settings first, calculate transfer, then check a provider’s current limits and test your actual workload before leaving it unattended.
What you need to decide before renting a VPS
A VPS can keep an encoder running without your home computer staying on, but you remain responsible for the server, stream process, monitoring and recovery. First establish whether your workflow sends a compatible, already-encoded file or re-encodes it continuously. Then use the intended output bitrate and hours streamed to estimate transfer and compare that workload with the VPS provider’s current terms.

- Stream format: resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and bitrate.
- VPS workload: file looping or relay versus continuous encoding, including any filters or scaling.
- Network allowance: outbound transfer, overage charges and the route from the selected server region to YouTube ingest.
- Operations: how you will test, monitor, restart and troubleshoot the stream.
No single cheapest Indian VPS is established as a reliable winner for every file and workflow. Plans and terms change, so verify the provider’s current region availability, included transfer, complete price, renewal and overage terms, taxes, optional IPv4 charges and rules for sustained outbound streaming before choosing.
Choose YouTube Live settings
YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend RTMPS for encrypted transport, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Supported video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1; audio can use AAC or MP3. YouTube accepts up to 60 fps. Check its current guidance for the full table and for recommendations beyond the H.264 examples below.

These are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations for the listed resolution and frame rate, not a guarantee of picture quality or a stable connection. Choose a quality your connection can sustain, test the upload bitrate, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube automatically transcodes live input into formats for viewers on different devices and networks.
Test with representative sound and movement rather than a static or silent sample. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

Check the VPS workload: forwarding or encoding
Looping or forwarding a compatible file
If the source is already encoded in a format and settings suitable for your stream, a workflow may copy or remux the media rather than encode every frame again. Whether that works depends on the file and the chosen workflow. Confirm its codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio and container, then test the complete stream to YouTube before relying on it.
Re-encoding or transcoding
Changing codec, resolution, frame rate or applying filters can require continuous encoding. That adds CPU demand. A VPS’s advertised vCPU count alone does not establish that it can encode your particular video in real time. Test the actual source, encoder settings and filters under sustained load; check that the encoder keeps up rather than accumulating delay or dropping frames.

Estimate monthly outbound transfer
Use the combined audio and video bitrate, not video bitrate alone, and multiply by the hours you plan to stream. As a rough planning calculation, 1 Mbps sustained for 30 days is about 324 GB decimal: 1,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. This arithmetic excludes protocol overhead, so leave room above the estimate and compare it with the provider’s actual outbound allowance and overage policy.
For example, YouTube’s recommended 1080p30 H.264 video bitrate is 14 Mbps. Your total stream bitrate will be higher once audio is included; calculate transfer from that combined rate and your actual streaming schedule, rather than treating the video figure as the whole connection requirement. The VPS also needs a sustained route to YouTube ingest that can carry the stream reliably.

Set up and test the stream
- Choose the target output. Select resolution, frame rate, codecs and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Prefer RTMPS and CBR where applicable, and set a two-second keyframe interval without exceeding four seconds.
- Inspect the source and workflow. Determine whether the VPS can send a compatible pre-encoded file or must encode it continuously. Include any scaling, filters or audio processing in your workload test.
- Calculate transfer. Add audio and video bitrate, multiply by planned streaming hours, and allow for overhead. Check the VPS plan’s included outbound data and charges beyond it.
- Verify the full VPS terms. Confirm the selected region, CPU, RAM and storage fit the workflow. Check all-in and renewal costs, transfer limits, taxes, IPv4 charges, overage rates and provider rules for long-running outbound streams.
- Configure YouTube Live and the encoder. Create or select the YouTube live stream and use its stream key in your encoder. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to that stream. Use one supported ingest route for the broadcast.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Run a representative test and check YouTube’s stream health and encoder messages. Verify that picture, sound and movement are present, and that your server can sustain the stream without falling behind.
YouTube’s DASH ingestion documentation covers specialized implementation details such as manifests, segment timing and retries; it is aimed mainly at encoder implementers, not a prerequisite for a typical FFmpeg RTMP(S) setup. RTMP and DASH ingestion cannot be mixed during a broadcast or used together as primary and backup ingestion methods. For an ordinary VPS workflow, choose one supported ingest route rather than treating DASH rules as general RTMP(S) requirements.
What to compare when selecting an Indian VPS
Compare current provider terms against the stream you plan to run; a low headline rate alone does not reveal whether the server fits or what the full bill will be.

Do not infer real-time encoding capability from a vCPU count or assume that a VPS advertised as low-cost includes enough transfer for a continuous stream. Secondary comparisons can help identify questions to ask, but they do not replace current official plan terms and a representative workload test.
Troubleshooting a 24/7 VPS stream
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the connection drops: check encoder messages, actual upload bitrate and the VPS route to ingest. Test at a bitrate the connection can sustain, then confirm the provider’s network and streaming terms.
- The encoder falls behind or drops frames: determine whether it is re-encoding or applying filters. Test the source and settings under sustained load; reduce the workload or choose a setup that can handle it.
- The VPS reaches its transfer limit or incurs overages: recalculate from combined audio and video bitrate and actual hours streamed, including overhead. Compare the result with the plan’s allowance and overage policy.
- The stream has no sound or unexpected motion: test with representative audio and movement, and check the source’s audio and video codecs and encoder messages before leaving the broadcast running.
- You are considering a backup ingest route: do not mix RTMP and DASH within one broadcast or treat them as simultaneous primary and backup inputs. Use one supported route for that broadcast.
