How to Add Photo Frames: Borders, Shapes, Photoshop and Canva Workflows

The most reliable way to add a classic border is to enlarge the photo’s canvas, fill the new area with a color, and keep that color layer behind the image. For shaped frames, use a mask or frame container instead: Photoshop’s Frame tool and Canva’s frames crop and resize the photo inside a rectangle, circle, polygon, or other shape. The right method depends on whether you need a clean print edge, a decorative crop, a precisely editable file, or the fastest beginner workflow.

This guide explains both approaches step by step, including how Photoshop divides canvas measurements, how to style outlines, where Canva’s border controls are found, how to avoid cropping away the subject, and what changes when the finished image will be printed.

Border, frame and mask: what you are actually adding

People use “frame” to describe several different effects. A canvas border is extra space added around the entire rectangular image. The original pixels stay intact, and the new space can be filled with white, black, a sampled color, or another design. This is the best choice when you want an even edge around a photograph or a simulated mat inside a print.

A shape frame is a container that defines the visible outline of the image. The photo is clipped to that shape, so a rectangular, elliptical, triangular, polygonal, or custom frame can turn a normal image into a circle, badge, collage tile, or mockup element. The image itself can usually be repositioned inside the container without changing the frame.

A stroke is an outline drawn around a layer or frame. It can be used alone or placed over a canvas border. Stroke controls normally determine the fill style, width and whether the outline sits inside, centered on, or outside the edge. These distinctions matter: enlarging the canvas creates visible space, while a stroke outlines an existing edge, and a shape frame changes the crop.

Choose the method before you edit

Method Best for Main controls Editing flexibility
Photoshop canvas expansion An even rectangular border for a photo or print Relative canvas width and height, centered anchor, color layer order Exact dimensions and separate layers
Photoshop Frame tool Circles, polygons, collages, mockups and custom-shaped crops Frame shape, image placement and frame-layer stroke Image remains masked inside an editable frame
Photoshop stroke A defined outline around an existing image or frame Solid, gradient or pattern fill; width; Inside, Center or Outside position Detailed outline treatment
Canva Stroke style Quick borders on supported images, videos, frames and shapes Style, weight, color and, where available, corner rounding Fast visual adjustment in the toolbar
Canva frames Drag-and-drop shaped crops for social graphics, avatars and layouts Frame selection, image position, size, border color, stroke weight and corner rounding Simple repositioning and resizing inside the frame

Canva is generally the quickest route when you want a visual result without managing layers. Photoshop takes more steps, but it exposes exact canvas dimensions, layer order, stroke alignment and custom shapes. Separate fill, image and frame layers also make a Photoshop file easier to revise later. Use a canvas border for a clean rectangular edge; use a shape frame when the crop itself is part of the design.

How to add a classic rectangular border in Photoshop

Adobe’s documented workflow starts with a single background layer and uses a centered, relative canvas expansion. The crucial detail is that the width and height you enter are the total amount added, not the thickness on one side. With the anchor centered, Photoshop divides each value equally between opposite edges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Prepare a version you can change

  1. Open the photograph and save a new version before editing. This preserves the original if you later want a different border or crop.
  2. Work from a single background layer. If the document contains multiple layers and the finished image should be treated as one photo, choose Layer > Flatten Image when necessary.
  3. Choose Layer > New > Layer from Background. This converts the background into a normal layer so the border can sit beneath it.

Flattening is a preparation step, not a requirement for every file. If your composition already has the layer structure you want, keep it and make sure the photograph layer can be separated from the color layer that will form the border.

2. Expand the canvas, not the pixels

  1. Choose Image > Canvas Size.
  2. Enable Relative. Enter the additional width and additional height you want to add around the image.
  3. Leave the anchor centered so the added area is distributed evenly on all four sides.
  4. Apply the change. Positive values create a wider border; negative values make the canvas smaller and therefore reduce the visible margin.

For example, if you enter an additional width of 200 pixels with a centered anchor, Photoshop adds 100 pixels to the left and 100 pixels to the right. An additional height of 120 pixels becomes 60 pixels at the top and 60 pixels at the bottom. If you need a 50-pixel border on each side, enter 100 pixels for the added width and 100 pixels for the added height. The same arithmetic applies to physical units when the document uses inches, centimeters or another supported unit.

3. Create the border color

  1. Create a Solid Color fill or adjustment layer for the border color.
  2. Choose white, black, a color sampled from the photograph, or a contrasting color that supports the subject.
  3. Drag the color layer below the image layer in the Layers panel.

If the color layer remains above the image, it will cover the photograph instead of appearing around it. Keeping the fill on its own layer lets you change the hue without repeating the canvas operation.

4. Inspect the result and save

Check all four edges at 100% view and at the size where the image will be used. Look for an accidentally off-center anchor, a border that is thinner on one side, or a subject that is too close to the new edge. Save the edited version under a new name. Adobe describes this process as a way to give a photo a border for added visual interest; the same workflow also creates a digital approximation of an interior matte.

Use Photoshop’s Frame tool for circles and other shapes

When the desired result is a circle, triangle, polygon or custom silhouette, expanding the canvas is the wrong operation because it leaves the image rectangular. Photoshop’s Frame tool creates a shape container and automatically masks and resizes a placed image to fit it.

Draw the frame

  1. Select the Frame tool.
  2. Choose a rectangular, elliptical, triangular, polygonal or custom shape from the tool options.
  3. Drag on the canvas to draw the frame at the size and location you need.

The frame is a separate layer. Its dimensions and position define the visible crop, while the image placed inside remains associated with that container.

Place and position the image

  1. Place an existing image in the frame or generate an image there using the available Photoshop placement options.
  2. Photoshop masks and resizes the image to the frame automatically.
  3. Reposition the image inside the frame so the important subject remains visible. Resize the frame itself when the layout needs a different proportion.

This workflow is useful for collages with several differently shaped photos, profile-style circular portraits, product mockups and layouts where each image needs a consistent container. The frame controls the crop; it does not add a rectangular margin around the original photo.

Add an outline with Photoshop Stroke

A shaped frame or a normal image can need a visible outline in addition to its crop. Select the relevant frame layer, open the layer’s fx controls and choose Stroke. Photoshop provides three fill treatments: solid color, gradient or pattern. Set the stroke width, then choose its alignment:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Inside keeps the outline within the layer’s edge.
  • Center straddles the edge.
  • Outside places the outline beyond the edge.

Alignment changes the apparent size of the image and the amount of space available around it. An outside stroke can enlarge the design footprint, while an inside stroke can reduce the visible photo area. Preview the effect at the final display size because a width that looks restrained when zoomed in can dominate a small avatar or thumbnail. Adobe’s Photoshop Help describes a stroke as a way to create a defined border around an image or design element.

Add a border quickly in Canva

Canva’s border controls are designed for a visual, toolbar-based workflow. They work only on supported element types, so the control may not appear for every object.

Apply a stroke to a supported element

  1. Select the image, video, frame or shape on the canvas.
  2. Open Stroke style in the toolbar.
  3. Choose a stroke style.
  4. Adjust the stroke weight.
  5. Choose the stroke color.
  6. Use Corner rounding when that option is available and you want softer corners.

Canva notes that borders are not supported on every element. Some text boxes, shadows, flipped shapes and certain editable shapes do not expose border controls. If Stroke style is missing, select the actual image or supported shape rather than a group, or use a Canva frame as an alternative.

Crop a photo into a decorative Canva frame

  1. Search Canva’s elements for a frame and choose the shape that matches your layout.
  2. Add the frame to the page.
  3. Drag an uploaded photo or Canva media onto the frame.
  4. Resize the frame to fit the composition.
  5. Reposition the image within the frame so the subject is not cut off.
  6. Adjust the border color, stroke weight and corner rounding from the toolbar when those controls are offered.

Canva describes frames as a way to crop images or videos into different shapes for style and structure. The drag-and-drop model is particularly practical when a design contains many photos that need matching circles, rounded rectangles or decorative silhouettes.

How to choose border color and width

Color for harmony

A color sampled from the photograph can make the edge feel integrated, especially when the image already contains a dominant background tone. Sampling does not mean choosing the brightest pixel; a quieter midtone often supports the subject without competing with it. For a neutral presentation, white and black remain clear options, but they create different emphasis: white feels lighter and can resemble a mat, while black creates a stronger visual boundary.

Color for emphasis

A contrasting color makes the border an active design element. Use it when the frame is meant to separate a photo from a busy page or to reinforce an established palette. The border should support the subject rather than become the first thing viewers notice.

Width as a visual decision

There is no universal pixel width, color or aspect ratio prescribed by the documented Photoshop and Canva workflows. Choose a restrained width for a quiet edge and a larger margin when the border is intentionally part of the composition. Judge it at the intended social, screen or print size instead of relying only on a highly zoomed-in editing view.

Protect the subject when using shape masks

A shape crop can remove important details even when the original file is untouched. Before committing to a circular or polygonal frame, identify the subject’s safe area: faces, logos, hands, text and other details should stay away from the crop boundary. In Photoshop, reposition the image inside the frame after it is masked. In Canva, drag the media within the frame until the focal point is centered or intentionally offset. If the subject cannot fit without losing essential information, enlarge the frame or choose a less restrictive shape.

Preview the entire design at its final aspect ratio. A crop that looks balanced on a wide desktop canvas can feel cramped in a square social tile, and a border that appears even in the editor can seem heavy after the image is reduced.

Printing a bordered photograph

A digital border can simulate the appearance of an interior matte around a print, but it does not replace the physical frame or mat board. Before sending the file to production, confirm the print’s final width and height and choose a physical frame and mat that match those dimensions. A border designed for one paper size will not preserve the same visual proportions when placed in a different opening.

For a clean rectangular print edge, the canvas-expansion method is usually the most predictable because the border is part of the finished rectangular artwork. For a shaped image mounted in a layout, use the frame or mask method and verify how the physical mount will hold the irregular edge. Keep the digital border and the physical mat conceptually separate: the file supplies the visual margin, while the frame and mat provide the real support and spacing.

Troubleshoot the result

The border is twice as thick as expected

In Photoshop, the values entered with Relative enabled are divided across opposite sides. If you wanted 50 pixels on each side but entered 50 for the added width, Photoshop creates 25 pixels on the left and 25 on the right. Enter the desired side thickness multiplied by two for each axis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The border is uneven

Reopen Image > Canvas Size and confirm that the anchor is centered. An off-center anchor intentionally puts more of the added canvas on one side. Also check that the image was not moved after the canvas expansion.

The color covers the photograph

Move the Solid Color fill or adjustment layer below the image in the Layers panel. The border works because the enlarged canvas is exposed around the image; a fill layer above it hides that image.

Photoshop’s shape crop cuts off the focal point

Select the image inside the frame and reposition it rather than stretching the original photograph. If the subject still cannot fit, enlarge the frame or switch to a shape with a more suitable aspect ratio.

Canva has no border control

The selected element may not support borders. Canva specifically excludes some text boxes, shadows, flipped shapes and certain editable shapes. Select a supported image, video, frame or shape, or place the media in a Canva frame and style that frame instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The printed result does not fit the physical frame

Check the print dimensions and the physical opening before production. A digital matte effect can look correct on screen while the chosen frame or mat uses a different size.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose Photoshop canvas expansion when the image must remain rectangular and the border needs exact dimensions.
  • Choose Photoshop’s Frame tool when the crop should be elliptical, triangular, polygonal or custom, or when a layered collage needs precise control.
  • Choose a Photoshop Stroke when the main requirement is a defined outline with a solid, gradient or pattern treatment and selectable alignment.
  • Choose Canva Stroke style when speed matters and the selected element supports a border.
  • Choose Canva frames when you want to drag media into a shaped container and adjust the crop visually.
  • Keep the original file or an unedited version before applying a border, especially when the same photograph may need several sizes or shapes.
  • Preview the design at its final screen or print proportion before exporting.
