You can add visible page numbers to a PDF by placing them in a header or footer, using available margin space, and checking the preview before applying the change. No numbering method can guarantee that every file’s appearance will remain identical, so inspect the saved PDF—especially pages with tight margins or existing footers.
Choose the right kind of numbering
First decide whether you want numbers printed on the pages or only a different numbering scheme in Acrobat’s navigation.

- Visible page numbers: Use a header or footer numbering tool. The number becomes part of the page’s visible content.
- Page labels: Use these to change the numbers displayed in Acrobat’s thumbnails and page navigation. Page labels do not add visible numbers to the page. Adobe explains the difference.
Add visible numbers in Acrobat desktop
- Open the PDF in Acrobat and choose Edit.
- Choose Header and footer > Add.
- In the Page Number and Date Format dialog, choose the number format and starting number.
- Select the header or footer field where the number should appear, then choose Insert Page Number.
- Adjust the font and margins. Preview the pages, then apply the change if the placement looks right. Adobe’s instructions note that if the PDF already has a header or footer, Acrobat may ask whether to replace it or add to it. See Adobe’s desktop steps.
Keep the numbers out of the existing content
Use the header and footer margin controls to place the number in clear space rather than over text, images, or an existing footer. Check the preview on pages whose content reaches close to the edge. A good preview lowers the chance of overlap, but it does not prove that every page in the saved file will match the original in every detail. Adobe documents margin and preview controls in its header and footer guidance.

For a cover page or front matter, use the page-range controls and choose a starting number appropriate to the pages being numbered. Preview the first affected page to confirm where numbering begins; the PDF’s physical page position and the number printed on it do not have to match. Adobe’s online numbering information describes controls for page range, position, and number formatting. Check the online tool’s current options.

Use Adobe’s browser-based numbering workflow
Adobe’s online tool describes a workflow in which you select a PDF, choose a position and page range, adjust the number’s appearance, and save the result. Adobe’s UK product page says the tool can skip the first page and requires signing in to a free Adobe account; access terms and interface details can change, so confirm them in the current service. View Adobe’s UK tool page.
Adobe’s browser help says the resulting PDF is automatically saved to Adobe cloud storage. If the file contains sensitive information, consider whether uploading it to an online service is appropriate before using this workflow. Read Adobe’s browser-workflow guidance.

After applying the numbers, inspect the saved PDF rather than relying on the setup preview alone. Check a page near the beginning, one in the middle, and one near the end, plus any page with a tight margin or an existing footer. Compare these pages with the original for overlap or other visible changes.
