Both Google Docs and Microsoft Word can add page numbers and control document layout. The key difference for these tasks is how you work with pages and sections: Google Docs requires Pages format for pagination, while Word uses section breaks for specialized numbering and layout. If you use Word for the web, you cannot add section breaks there.
Which should you choose for page numbering and formatting?
For a straightforward document, either editor has a built-in page-number command. Choose Google Docs if you want to work in its Pages format and adjust page settings there; choose Word when your document needs section-based numbering or layout controls. These are workflow differences, not evidence that one app is universally easier or better.

- Google Docs: Page numbers, headers, and footers require Pages format. Pageless mode is for continuous scrolling and does not support those page elements.
- Microsoft Word: Sections let you vary numbering and layout across a document. The documented section-break workflow requires desktop Word, not Word for the web.
How do you add page numbers?
Google Docs
- Switch the document to Pages format if it is currently Pageless.
- Choose Insert > Page elements > Page number.
- Select a placement, or open the additional options to adjust placement, alignment, or which pages or sections receive numbers.
Google’s instructions for page numbering apply to Pages format: Add page numbers to a document.

How do you handle a title page or restart numbering?
In Word: hide the first-page number
To omit a number from the first page, enable Different First Page in the header or footer tools. If page two should display 1, set the page-number start value to 0; the first page’s zero is hidden and the next page displays 1. Follow the version-specific controls in Microsoft’s page-numbering instructions.
In Google Docs: set numbering for a page or section
Use the page-number options to apply numbering to selected pages or sections and set where numbering starts. This can handle common title-page and section cases, but the exact choices depend on the document’s section structure. Google documents the controls under page numbering.

How do you use different numbering in document sections?
Word: use a section break and unlink the header or footer
- Place the cursor where the new numbering scheme should begin.
- Insert a section break from the Layout tab’s breaks controls.
- Open the new section’s header or footer and turn off Link to Previous. Header and footer links are controlled separately, so unlink the one containing the page number.
- Insert or format page numbers in that section, then set the desired number format or starting value.
This supports, for example, Roman numerals in front matter followed by Arabic numbers beginning at 1 in the main text. Microsoft’s guide explains section breaks and numbering: Format page numbers for different sections.

Google Docs: apply page numbering to sections
Google Docs lets you use page-number options for selected sections. Add section breaks where the numbering needs to change, then use the page-number settings for the relevant section. The cited Google instructions document section-specific numbering, but they do not establish that this workflow is easier or harder than Word’s.

How do page size, orientation, and margins differ?
Google Docs: use Page setup in Pages format
In Pages format, open File > Page setup to change paper size, orientation, margins, and page color. Google also documents changing orientation for selected content or a section when a document needs mixed portrait and landscape pages. See Change page settings in Google Docs.
Word: use sections when only part of the document should change
Word applies layout changes such as orientation, columns, and headers or footers through sections. Insert section breaks around the part that needs different formatting, then apply the change to that section rather than the whole document. Microsoft’s overview covers section breaks.

What changes in Pageless mode and Word for the web?
- Google Docs Pageless: It provides a continuously scrolling layout, but does not support page numbers, headers, or footers. Switch to Pages format when you need those features. Google explains the distinction in its Pageless format guidance.
- Word for the web: Microsoft says the web app cannot add section breaks. Use desktop Word if you need a section-break workflow for separate numbering or specialized layout. This limitation is specific to adding section breaks; it should not be generalized to every Word feature or version. See Microsoft’s section-break guidance.
Why page numbers can help readers
Page numbers are useful beyond printed copies: they help readers locate and refer to material in a long document. Google’s accessibility guidance notes that “Landmarks like headers, footers, page numbers, and page counts help your readers find where they are in your document.” Read Google’s guidance on making documents accessible.
