The feature can disappear after a failed Windows component change, an update-related servicing problem, or corruption in the local printer components. The recovery methods below progress from the simplest interface to command-line repair. A physical printer, USB cable, replacement cartridge, or ordinary printer-driver package cannot restore this virtual feature.
Before you start
Save open work before changing Windows features. Feature changes can require a restart, and disabling the component temporarily removes Microsoft Print to PDF from every application. You need an administrator account, or credentials for an administrator, for Windows Features, DISM, and PowerShell changes. A standard user can usually check the printer list and test printing, but cannot approve every installation operation.
Record your Windows edition and version if the problem started after an update. Use the Windows Features or Settings route first. DISM and PowerShell change the same Windows component from a command line; they are escalation paths, not separate printer-driver installations. The Control Panel route is available on supported Windows editions, while Optional features is the more discoverable path in current Windows 11 builds.
Method 1: Re-enable Microsoft Print to PDF in Control Panel
This route works through the classic Windows Features dialog and is useful when you want to see the component’s current checkbox state.
- Open Control Panel. If the categories view is active, change View by to Large icons.
- Open Programs and Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off in the left pane. Windows may take a moment to populate the list.
- Find Microsoft Print to PDF and select its checkbox.
- Choose OK and wait while Windows applies the change. If Windows requests a restart, restart rather than merely shutting down and powering on later.
- After Windows starts, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and look for Microsoft Print to PDF.
If the checkbox was clear, this enables the feature. If it was already selected but no printer appears, do not simply click OK again; use the complete disable/restart/re-enable procedure in the next section.

When the checkbox is selected but the printer is absent
A selected checkbox means Windows believes the optional component is enabled, but the printer registration can still be missing. Microsoft Q&A answers recommend rebuilding that state with a deliberate toggle.

- Return to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off.
- Clear Microsoft Print to PDF, select OK, and allow Windows to remove the component.
- Restart the computer. Use Restart, not a normal shutdown, so Windows completes the component transition.
- Open the same Windows Features dialog again and select Microsoft Print to PDF.
- Select OK, wait for completion, and restart again if prompted.
- Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners once Windows has loaded.
This cycle is different from reinstalling a downloaded driver: it removes and re-registers the built-in Windows feature. If Windows reports that no changes were made, still complete the restart before checking the box again; the restart is what finalizes the removal state.
Method 2: Add it through Windows 11 Optional features
Windows 11 provides a newer Settings interface for optional components. The exact wording can vary slightly by Windows build, but the path is:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for Microsoft Print to PDF.
- Select the result, choose Next if shown, then choose Add.
- Wait for Windows to finish installing the feature. Restart if Settings or Windows requests it.
- Verify the result at Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
If Settings says the feature is installed but the printer is still not listed, return to the Windows Features dialog and perform the disable, restart, re-enable cycle. The Settings page is convenient for a normal addition; the toggle cycle is the recovery step for a stale registration.
Search carefully for the full feature name. Similar-looking optional components are not substitutes for Microsoft Print to PDF. If the View features window cannot load, check that Windows Update is functioning and then use the DISM method instead of trying to add a vendor printer.
Method 3: Enable the feature with DISM
Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) can enable the component directly when the graphical tools fail. This command changes the currently running Windows installation, so open an elevated console.

- Choose Run as administrator and approve the User Account Control prompt.

dism /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:"Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features"- Wait until DISM reports that processing has completed. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners for Microsoft Print to PDF.
The /Online switch targets the Windows installation currently in use. The feature name must be entered as shown, including the quotation marks around the name. A successful command may say that the operation completed; that confirms the optional component change, but the restart and printer-list check are still necessary.

When broader printer repair is justified
Use broader printer troubleshooting only after confirming that the Windows feature itself is enabled.
