Open Graph tags control the title, description, URL, and image that social platforms can use when someone shares a Shopify product link. In most stores, add or adjust them in the active theme’s existing metadata code inside <head>—often rendered from layout/theme.liquid. First inspect the theme’s current output: adding a second set of tags can create conflicting previews.
Where Shopify product-page Open Graph tags belong
Open Graph metadata belongs in the document’s <head>. Shopify’s theme SEO documentation places SEO metadata there, and Shopify’s current Horizon theme uses a reusable snippet for SEO and Open Graph tags. Other themes can organize metadata differently, so check the active theme rather than assuming a particular filename or snippet exists.

Before editing, duplicate the published theme from Shopify admin so you can test changes without immediately affecting the live storefront. Then inspect the theme’s layout and snippets for existing og:title, og:description, og:url, og:type, and og:image output. If the theme already emits these tags, change its existing logic instead of inserting another set.

For a product page, the product’s featured image is usually the relevant image. Shopify’s page_image object represents the current page image; product and collection pages use their featured image, while other pages or pages without a featured image can use the social-sharing image. Shopify can automatically generate og:image, og:image:secure_url, og:image:width, and og:image:height from page_image when the theme does not provide Open Graph image tags. To update the general fallback image, go to Online Store > Preferences, find Social sharing image and SEO, choose an image, and save. That image is not a substitute for setting the intended featured image on each product. Shopify says theme-code images take priority, followed by theme-settings images, with the Preferences image as the fallback; some themes only display images uploaded in their own settings. Add product-aware tags if the theme needs them
The following is an illustrative Liquid pattern for a theme that does not already provide the tags. Adapt it to the theme’s existing metadata snippet and conventions; do not paste it alongside a duplicate set. Shopify’s Horizon theme is one current example of a theme using page title, page description, canonical URL, and a product-specific Open Graph type, but it does not establish that every theme has the same architecture. Inspect the rendered page before relying on the image URL. It must be publicly reachable and fully qualified. Shopify’s Horizon example prefixes its page_image | image_url result with http:; URL behavior can vary with theme implementation, so confirm the actual output rather than copying an older URL filter or assuming the result.

Validate the page and fix stale previews
- Open a product page and view its rendered HTML source. Confirm that the
<head>contains one intended set of Open Graph tags and that the values correspond to that product: canonical URL, title, description, type, and image. - Open the image URL directly in a browser or another public-access check. Confirm it loads without authentication and shows the expected product image.
- Preview the product URL with a social platform’s supported inspector. Shopify lists Facebook’s crawler, LinkedIn Post Inspector, and Twitter Card Validator as preview options in its social sharing guidance.
- If Facebook continues to show an old image, use Facebook Sharing Debugger to refresh the saved information for the link. Shopify notes that Facebook retains image information for a number of days; refreshes and preview updates on other platforms are not guaranteed to happen immediately or identically.
Common problems and practical fixes
- The wrong image appears: Check the product’s featured image, the rendered
og:image, and whether theme code or theme settings supply a different image before the store-wide Preferences fallback. - The preview shows an old image or text: Verify the live rendered tags first, then refresh the platform’s cached link data where its inspector supports that action. A correct page tag does not guarantee every platform updates at once.
- Tags appear twice: Remove the added duplicate or modify the existing metadata snippet so only one intended set is rendered.
- The image URL is malformed or inaccessible: Check the complete rendered URL and open it publicly. Adjust the theme’s image URL output to produce a valid absolute URL using the active theme’s conventions.
- Editing the theme is uncomfortable or unsupported: Shopify says compatible themes may connect metafields through the theme editor, while vintage themes or unsupported metafield types can require code changes or Shopify Partner assistance.
