OpenCart 4.x uses the platform’s extension installer and OCMOD workflow, while the commonly cited LiveChat instructions are a legacy, manual file-upload procedure for OpenCart 2.0.x/2.1.x, 2.2.0.0, and 2.3.x. Those instructions do not establish OpenCart 4.x support.
Back up or stage the store, confirm version compatibility in the extension’s own documentation, install through the route documented for that version, then test both the storefront and the administration logs. The steps below show the two documented paths, how to evaluate marketplace listings, and how to recover when the widget or module does not appear.

Choose the correct installation path first
OpenCart extensions are not interchangeable across major versions. A package built for OpenCart 2.x may use a different file layout and administration flow from an OpenCart 4.x extension. Treat the version shown in a listing or vendor guide as a hard prerequisite, not a suggestion.

Prepare the store before changing extensions
1. Record the OpenCart version
Write down the exact major and minor release shown in your administration interface or installation files. “OpenCart 2” and “OpenCart 4” are not precise enough for an extension decision; the LiveChat instructions distinguish 2.0.x/2.1.x, 2.2.0.0, and 2.3.x.
2. Back up or stage the site
Create a recoverable copy of the files and database, or perform the installation on a staging store. An extension can alter templates, event handlers, modification files, or administrative settings. A backup gives you a defined rollback point if the storefront layout breaks or checkout behavior changes.
3. Check the theme and deployment model
Note whether the store uses a customized theme, a managed host, a reverse proxy, or a deployment process that replaces files during release. Ask the extension vendor whether its current package supports that theme and deployment model. The marketplace search page can identify candidates, but it does not certify that a result is maintained or compatible.
4. Decide what agents need to see
Some integrations can pass cart context to the operator. In the documented LiveChat setup, enabling Show cart details exposes cart value, a product link, and product details during a chat and in Visitors. Decide whether that information is useful and appropriate for your support process before turning it on.
Install a compatible extension on OpenCart 4.x
Use this route only when the extension’s listing or vendor documentation explicitly supports your OpenCart 4.x release. The official OpenCart workflow is package-based; do not substitute the older LiveChat manual-upload instructions unless the vendor separately documents that they apply to your version.
- Obtain the correct package. Download the extension package supplied for your OpenCart 4.x version. The documented package format is
.ocmod.zip. Keep the original download so you can identify the exact version if you need support or a rollback. - Open the installer. In administration, go to Extensions > Installer and upload the ZIP file. Wait for the upload and installation result before navigating away.
- Install the extension entry. After the package is uploaded, locate its entry in the extension list and choose the install action. A successful upload alone does not necessarily enable the module.
- Open the extension type. Go to Extensions > Extensions, select the relevant extension type, locate the newly installed chat module, and open its configuration screen.
- Configure the provider. Enter the account details, site identifier, or other values required by that provider’s current instructions. Do not copy settings from a different OpenCart major version.
- Refresh modifications when the package includes OCMOD. OpenCart’s extension guidance calls for refreshing modifications after an OCMOD extension is installed. If your administration interface exposes a modification refresh control, run it after installation.
- Clear cache where appropriate. Clear the OpenCart modification or theme cache when the extension documentation or the official workflow indicates it. Cached templates can make a correctly installed widget appear to be missing.
- Enable and save. Set the module status to enabled, complete any store or layout assignment required by the extension, and save. Menu labels can vary by OpenCart release and extension type.
- Test as a customer. Open the storefront in a private browser window, check desktop and mobile layouts, and start a test conversation. Confirm that the chat launcher does not cover cart, checkout, cookie, or accessibility controls.
- Review logs. If the module does not render or administration reports an error, inspect OpenCart’s system storage logs and the provider’s installation notes before changing files manually.
Install the documented LiveChat plugin on OpenCart 2.x
The LiveChat page used for these steps lists plugins for OpenCart 2.0.x/2.1.x, 2.2.0.0, and 2.3.x. Its page image was updated September 20, 2022. This is version-specific, legacy documentation; it is not evidence that the same plugin supports OpenCart 4.x.
- Select the matching plugin. Download the LiveChat plugin that corresponds to the store’s listed OpenCart version. Do not choose a nearby version merely because its number looks similar.
- Extract the archive locally. Unpack the downloaded file and locate the folder named for the relevant release, such as
opencart2.X. Preserve the extracted directory structure. - Upload the folder contents. Upload the contents of the appropriate
opencart2.Xfolder into the OpenCart installation directory. The vendor’s procedure is a file upload, not the OpenCart 4.x.ocmod.zipinstaller route. - Open module administration. In OpenCart administration, open Extensions, choose Modules, locate LiveChat, and select its edit action.
- Enter the account email. Provide the LiveChat login email requested by the module, then save the configuration.
- Choose cart context. If you want agents to see cart information and the option is available, enable Show cart details. The documented behavior includes cart value, a product link, and product details in the chat and Visitors view.
- Enable the module and verify the storefront. Check the store in a fresh browser session. If the launcher is absent, confirm the module status, file placement, cache state, and error logs before uploading the files again.
If your store is on OpenCart 4.x, do not use this sequence as a workaround. Obtain an extension or integration whose current documentation explicitly names OpenCart 4.x.

How to evaluate marketplace chat integrations
OpenCart Marketplace search results can surface options such as tawk.to, Smartsupp, and Chatra, but a search result is discovery information, not a compatibility guarantee. Open the individual listing and the vendor’s own documentation before installation.
Check version support
Look for the exact OpenCart release, not only a broad “OpenCart” label. Confirm whether the package targets the same major version, whether the vendor still publishes updates, and whether the installation instructions use the same administration menus visible in your store.
Check the installation model
Determine whether the product is an installable extension, a provider-hosted widget, or a manual code/file integration. An installable OpenCart 4.x extension should explain its ZIP and OCMOD process. A provider-hosted service may instead require an account connection or a vendor-specific module. Do not assume that instructions for one model apply to another.
Check the support features you actually need
- Website chat launcher and agent conversation workflow
- Cart value, product links, and product details visible during support
- Any automation or routing features documented by the vendor
- Compatibility with your theme, language, checkout, and mobile layout
- Support and update policy for your OpenCart release
Check commercial and data terms
Confirm the service price, extension license, renewal terms, account limits, data retention, and privacy responsibilities directly in the current vendor documentation. The available marketplace search evidence does not establish these facts for tawk.to, Smartsupp, Chatra, or any other listing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCommon failure symptoms and recovery steps
The extension uploads but no chat appears
- Confirm that the package supports the exact OpenCart version.
- Check that the module was installed and enabled after upload; uploading a ZIP or copying files alone may not activate it.
- For OpenCart 4.x, refresh modifications and clear the relevant cache.
- Open the storefront in a private window to avoid a cached script or session.
- Inspect OpenCart system storage logs for a PHP, permission, or missing-file error.
The administration menu does not contain the documented item
You may be following instructions for another major version or another extension type. OpenCart menu labels can vary by release. Compare the vendor’s version statement with your recorded version and use the route documented for that release instead of guessing at a different menu.
The storefront layout is damaged after installation
Disable the extension if administration remains accessible, clear the applicable modification and theme caches, and restore the backup or staged copy if the problem persists. Record the extension version and the log message before contacting the vendor; that information distinguishes a package mismatch from a theme conflict.
Cart information is missing from conversations
Cart context is optional and provider-specific. In the documented LiveChat module, verify that Show cart details is enabled and that the store is using the matching plugin version. If the setting is not present, the integration’s documentation does not establish that cart details are supported.

A marketplace listing claims compatibility but provides no current guide
Treat the claim as unverified. Search results do not prove maintenance, compatibility, feature parity, pricing, or terms. Ask the vendor for a release-specific installation guide and a support statement before making the production change.
Operational checks after the chat goes live
Test the customer journey
- Open a product page as a logged-out visitor.
- Start a chat and send a test question.
- Add an item to the cart and confirm whether the integration exposes the intended cart context.
- Move through cart and checkout to ensure the launcher does not block controls or interfere with validation.
- Repeat on a phone-sized viewport and in the browsers your customers use.
Document the installation
Record the OpenCart version, extension or plugin version, installation date, account used, enabled settings, and backup location. Keep a copy of the vendor documentation that matched your release. This makes future OpenCart upgrades safer because you can check whether the integration has an upgrade path before replacing core files or modifications.
Plan for upgrades
Recheck compatibility before every OpenCart major-version upgrade. A module that works on 2.3.x is not automatically suitable for 4.x, and a package that installs on 4.x may still need a theme or OCMOD update after an OpenCart release change. Test the chat and checkout on staging before deploying the upgrade to customers.

|---|---|---|
| OpenCart 4.x and a vendor offers a current 4.x extension | Use the .ocmod.zip installer workflow |
It follows OpenCart’s documented 4.x extension mechanics |
| OpenCart 2.0.x, 2.1.x, 2.2.0.0, or 2.3.x and you want the documented LiveChat integration | Use the matching manual plugin and module configuration | The vendor guide names these versions and describes this file-upload route |
| Your version is not named in the vendor guide | Pause and obtain written, version-specific support confirmation | Neither a search result nor a nearby-version package proves compatibility |
| You need cart value and product context for agents | Choose an integration that documents cart context, then enable its setting if available | Cart details are an integration feature, not a universal OpenCart capability |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the legacy LiveChat instructions on OpenCart 4.x?
No conclusion of OpenCart 4.x support can be drawn from those instructions. They list OpenCart 2.0.x/2.1.x, 2.2.0.0, and 2.3.x, so obtain a separate 4.x integration guide before installing.
Is uploading an extension ZIP enough to enable live chat?
Not necessarily. In the OpenCart 4.x workflow, upload at Extensions > Installer, install the extension entry, then install and configure the module under Extensions > Extensions. Enable it and refresh modifications or clear cache when the workflow calls for those actions.
What information does “Show cart details” provide?
The documented LiveChat option can expose cart value, a product link, and product details during the chat and in Visitors. The setting is optional, so leave it disabled if your support process does not require that context.
Do Marketplace search results verify that an extension is maintained?
No. Results can identify candidates, including tawk.to, Smartsupp, and Chatra, but they do not establish current compatibility, maintenance, pricing, feature parity, or terms. Those details must come from the individual listing and vendor documentation.

Where should I look when an OpenCart installation fails?
After confirming the package matches your version, inspect OpenCart’s system storage logs and follow the extension’s troubleshooting notes. For OpenCart 4.x, also check modification refresh and cache clearing. Restore the backup or staged copy if the storefront remains unstable.
Should live chat be tested on checkout?
Yes. A launcher that works on a product page can still overlap checkout controls or conflict with a customized theme. Test product, cart, checkout, desktop, and mobile views before enabling the integration for all visitors.
