To add customer-support chat to a mobile app, integrate a support vendor’s mobile SDK or build a chat interface on messaging infrastructure. Start by deciding whether you need synchronous live-agent chat, asynchronous messaging, or only contextual in-app notices. Then verify that the SDK supports your app framework, configure customer identity and security, connect the agent workflow, and test notifications and handoffs before release.
The terms are not interchangeable. Zendesk documents separate Chat and Messaging SDK paths, while Intercom’s Messenger is a mobile conversation surface. Amazon IVS Chat supplies chat infrastructure rather than a complete support desk. Firebase In-App Messaging is for targeted prompts and promotions, not two-way agent conversations.

Choose the right implementation path first
Your product decision determines the code, operational work, and customer experience. A support SDK can provide the conversation UI and a connection to an agent console. A lower-level chat SDK gives you more control but leaves routing, ticketing, staffing, and support processes to your team. A campaign tool may look like chat inside the app but does not create a live support channel.

Define what “live chat” means in your app
Synchronous live-agent chat
A customer opens a conversation and expects an available support representative to respond in the same session. This requires an agent workspace, availability or routing logic, conversation status, and a fallback when no agent is online. A vendor’s Chat SDK is designed around this model.

Asynchronous customer messaging
Messaging lets a customer leave a conversation, receive a later response, and return to the same thread. It is usually a better fit when support is not staffed continuously or when a conversation must persist across sessions. Zendesk treats Messaging as a separate SDK path, and its setup guidance tells existing Chat users to migrate from live chat to messaging in relevant accounts. That migration instruction is Zendesk-specific; confirm the current steps in your Zendesk account before changing production configuration.
Contextual in-app notices
Some teams call any in-app text “chat.” Firebase In-App Messaging is documented for targeted contextual messages to active users, such as prompts and promotions. It is not presented as a two-way agent conversation, so it should not replace a support chat integration.
Pre-integration checklist
- Record the app stack. Write down whether the app is native iOS, native Android, React Native, Cordova, or another framework. The cited documentation identifies Zendesk Android and iOS coverage, Intercom native mobile plus React Native and Cordova, and Amazon IVS Chat React and React Native support.
- Choose the conversation model. Decide whether a customer needs a live session, a persistent message thread, or one-way contextual notices. Do not select an SDK until this decision is explicit.
- Map the support operation. Define which team receives a new conversation, how urgent issues are identified, what happens outside working hours, and how an agent ends or escalates a thread. A low-level chat SDK will not automatically provide these support processes.
- List identity data. Decide how the app will identify a signed-in customer, what name and contact details agents may see, and how a signed-out user can start a conversation if that is allowed.
- Set data and security rules. Determine what conversation content may be stored, which app screens can open the Messenger, and how authentication tokens are issued and rotated. Intercom’s setup guidance specifically includes securing its Messenger.
- Plan notifications. Decide whether replies should trigger push notifications, in-app badges, email, or no alert. Intercom documents optional push-notification setup; push delivery still depends on your mobile platform configuration.
- Confirm commercial access. Intercom requires a trial or subscription for its Messenger. The cited material does not establish current prices for Zendesk, Intercom, Amazon IVS Chat, or a custom build, so do not publish a price from this guide.
Step-by-step implementation workflow
1. Write the customer journey
Describe the complete path: where the user taps for help, what information is attached to the first message, how the user sees waiting or offline status, how a conversation is resumed, and what happens after resolution. Include failure cases such as an expired session, no network, or an unavailable agent.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Select the SDK or architecture
Use a support vendor’s mobile SDK when you need an established agent workflow and do not want to build the support console. Use a lower-level chat SDK when your team will own the interface and backend behavior. Select Firebase In-App Messaging only for one-way contextual communication.
3. Verify framework and version support
Match the vendor’s current installation instructions to the exact framework and platform versions in your build. The cited sources establish framework families, not a permanent list of supported SDK versions. Check current version requirements immediately before implementation because mobile SDK compatibility changes.
4. Create the vendor project and access plan
Open the chosen vendor’s account or project, enable the relevant mobile product, and confirm that your subscription or trial includes the intended Messenger or SDK. Keep development and production credentials separate. Intercom’s Messenger requires a trial or subscription; no equivalent current price is established here for the other paths.
5. Add the mobile SDK
Follow the vendor’s platform-specific installation guide to add the dependency, initialize it during app startup, and register the application identifiers required by the platform. For a custom implementation, add the chat client library, configure the service endpoint, and establish a backend session rather than embedding permanent service credentials in the app.
6. Authenticate the customer securely
Use your server to create or authorize the customer identity when the app has a signed-in user. Pass only the short-lived or vendor-approved identity material to the app. Never ship a master API key, private signing secret, or unrestricted administrator credential in the mobile binary. Revoke or refresh identity material when a user signs out or changes account.
7. Configure the conversation surface
Place the chat entry point where a customer seeking help can find it without obscuring core actions. Configure the initial context you can safely share, such as the app area or an order reference, and label automated messages so customers know when they are waiting for a person. Keep the screen usable with the keyboard open, on small displays, and when the device rotates if your app supports rotation.
8. Connect routing and agent handling
For a support SDK, connect the mobile conversation to the vendor’s agent workflow and set the queue, department, or assignment rules available in your account. For Amazon IVS Chat or a custom stack, implement the missing support layer yourself: agent identity, routing, presence, transcript storage, escalation, and a way to close or reopen a thread. The cited Amazon IVS material does not establish these features as built in.
9. Add reply notifications
Configure optional push notifications only after the conversation identity is stable. Ask for notification permission at a moment that explains the benefit, and provide an in-app route that opens the correct conversation. Test foreground, background, terminated-app, logged-out, and notification-tapped states. Intercom documents optional push setup; your app remains responsible for platform permission and delivery behavior.

Show a clear offline state instead of silently discarding a message. Preserve unsent text only when your privacy policy allows it, mark messages as pending, and provide a retry action. Handle expired authentication, rate limits, service outages, and an agent ending the conversation without trapping the customer on a blank screen.
11. Test with real support scenarios
- New customer starts a conversation while an agent is available.
- Customer sends a message while all agents are offline.
- Customer leaves the app and returns after a reply.
- Customer signs out, then another user signs in on the same device.
- Network changes from Wi-Fi to cellular during message submission.
- Push permission is denied or later revoked.
- An agent transfers, closes, or reopens the conversation.
- The app is upgraded while a conversation is open.
12. Release with operational monitoring
Track initialization failures, authentication errors, message-send failures, notification-open failures, and crashes around the chat screen. Give support staff a documented fallback, such as an alternate contact method, for periods when the in-app channel is unavailable.

1. Zendesk Chat SDK: live chat in a custom app
Zendesk’s help guidance says a custom mobile app can use its Chat SDK for live chat. This is the most direct path when your support team already works in Zendesk and wants a customer to reach an agent from inside the app rather than through a browser.
What it does
The Chat SDK embeds a live-chat experience in a custom mobile application. The cited SDK documentation identifies Android and iOS coverage. Your developers still need to add the SDK, initialize it, identify the user, place the chat entry point, and handle the mobile lifecycle.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When to choose it
- Your requirement is an agent conversation happening in a live-chat session.
- Your support operation is already organized around Zendesk’s live-chat workflow.
- You can provide Android or iOS development work for the custom integration.
Limits and decisions
Zendesk states that custom integration involves code and may require developer help. The Chat SDK is not the same product path as Zendesk Messaging. If your business needs persistent asynchronous threads, evaluate the Messaging SDK instead of assuming the live-chat SDK will provide that behavior. Current plan prices were not established in the cited material.
2. Zendesk Messaging SDK: persistent mobile conversations
Zendesk documents a separate Messaging SDK for adding messaging to a custom mobile app. It is the relevant path when a customer may leave the app and return later without losing the conversation context.
What it does
The Messaging SDK supplies the mobile integration for Zendesk’s messaging product, while your team handles app initialization, identity, placement, notifications, and release testing. Zendesk’s setup guidance distinguishes messaging from its Chat SDK and tells some existing Chat users to migrate from live chat to messaging.
When to choose it
- The support experience must persist beyond one live session.
- Customers may send a message outside staffed hours and receive a later response.
- Your Zendesk account is already using, or is moving toward, the vendor’s messaging workflow.
Migration caution
The migration requirement is account- and product-specific. Check the current Zendesk migration documentation, eligibility, and behavior of existing conversations before changing a production Chat integration. Do not assume that replacing one SDK dependency automatically migrates routing, history, or agent settings.

3. Intercom Messenger: conversations and in-app help
Intercom documents a mobile Messenger for customer conversations and says it can expose Messages and Help spaces. Its installation documentation covers native iOS, native Android, React Native, and Cordova.
What it does
The Messenger gives your app an in-product surface for conversations and help content. Your implementation must install the platform-specific SDK, initialize it, identify users according to Intercom’s requirements, secure the Messenger, and decide whether optional push notifications should be enabled.
Access and cost
Intercom states that the Messenger requires a trial or subscription. The cited documentation does not establish a current price, included seats, message allowance, or plan limits, so those details must be obtained from the current Intercom account and commercial terms.
When to choose it
- You want one mobile surface for customer conversations and help content.
- Your app uses native iOS, native Android, React Native, or Cordova.
- You are prepared to meet the subscription requirement and configure identity, security, and optional push notifications.
4. Amazon IVS Chat Messaging SDK: build the experience yourself
Amazon’s Amazon IVS Chat guide covers a Chat Messaging SDK for React and React Native. This is a lower-level option for teams that want to control the chat interface or embed messaging into a custom product experience.
What it provides
The cited material supports using the SDK for chat development and messaging. It does not establish that Amazon IVS Chat includes a complete customer-support console, ticketing, agent assignment, business-hours routing, or escalation system.
Additional components you must plan
- A secure customer and agent identity model.
- Message persistence and transcript access.
- Agent presence, queues, assignment, and transfer behavior.
- Moderation, abuse handling, retention, and deletion controls.
- Push notifications and deep links back to the correct thread.
- An agent workspace or integration with an existing support desk.
When it is appropriate
Choose this route when your engineering team needs control over the UI and is willing to own the support-specific components around the messaging layer. It is not a drop-in substitute for a staffed support platform.
5. Firebase In-App Messaging: useful for prompts, not live support
Firebase In-App Messaging targets active users with contextual messages, including prompts and promotions. It can be useful for onboarding guidance, feature announcements, or a well-timed link that directs a user to your support channel.
Rank #3
- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for calls, meetings, music, and more
- Rotating Noise-Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when not in use
- Handy Inline Controls: Simple inline controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- USB-C Plug-and-Play: Simply plug the USB-C cable into your computer, including MacBook Neo laptops, and you're ready to talk or listen without installing software.
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable USB C headphones with adjustable headband feature swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort
Why it is not a live-chat implementation
The cited documentation does not position Firebase In-App Messaging as a two-way conversation with an agent. It does not provide the support-thread behavior, agent replies, or customer-service workflow described by the Zendesk and Intercom options. Use it alongside a support chat integration only when you need targeted in-app notices.
6. A fully custom support chat stack
A custom stack gives you control over the mobile UI, message model, storage, and integration boundaries. It also transfers every support responsibility to your team or to separate services.
Core services to design
- Mobile client: conversation list, thread view, composer, attachment rules, loading states, retries, and accessibility.
- Identity service: signed-in customer mapping, session expiration, sign-out cleanup, and agent authorization.
- Conversation service: thread creation, participant roles, status transitions, unread counts, and history.
- Agent workspace: queue, assignment, presence, internal notes if needed, escalation, and closure.
- Notification service: push payloads, deep links, permission handling, and quiet-hours behavior.
- Data controls: retention, deletion, export, access logging, and protection of sensitive content.
Custom development is justified only when the product requirements cannot be met by a support SDK or when owning the entire experience is a deliberate engineering choice. A chat transport alone does not create a customer-service operation.
Security and privacy checklist
- Keep vendor secrets and signing keys on a server, never in the mobile bundle.
- Use authenticated customer identities and invalidate them on sign-out.
- Send the minimum customer context needed by agents.
- Protect transcripts in storage and during transport according to your organization’s security requirements.
- Define retention and deletion behavior before collecting attachments or sensitive account details.
- Prevent one account’s conversation from appearing after another user signs in on a shared device.
- Audit deep links so a notification cannot open another customer’s thread.
- Document what happens when the vendor account, SDK, or notification service is unavailable.
Troubleshooting common failures
The chat button appears, but no conversation opens
Check SDK initialization timing, the current customer identity, account entitlement, and whether the app is using development credentials with a production project. Review initialization logs before changing the UI.
Messages work in development but not after release
Compare production application identifiers, signing configuration, environment variables, notification credentials, and vendor project settings. A release build must point to the intended production workspace.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe wrong customer sees an old thread
Clear the previous identity during sign-out, then initialize the new identity only after the new session is established. Test account switching on the same physical device, not only on a simulator.
Replies arrive late or not at all
Separate message delivery from notification delivery. Confirm that the conversation itself receives the reply, then test push permission, background restrictions, notification credentials, and deep-link handling.
The team expected ticketing or routing from a chat SDK
Revisit the product boundary. Amazon IVS Chat documentation supports chat messaging but does not establish a support console or ticketing system. Add those components or select a support platform that already supplies the required agent workflow.
How to decide
| If your primary need is… | Start by evaluating… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Live agent sessions in an existing Zendesk operation | Zendesk Chat SDK | It is the documented live-chat path for custom mobile apps |
| Persistent conversations in Zendesk | Zendesk Messaging SDK | Zendesk separates messaging from live chat and documents a distinct SDK |
| Messages and help content in a mobile Messenger | Intercom Messenger | Intercom documents Messages and Help spaces across native and cross-platform mobile frameworks |
| A custom React or React Native chat interface | Amazon IVS Chat Messaging SDK | Its cited guide covers chat messaging for those frameworks, while leaving support operations to you |
| Prompts or promotions shown to active users | Firebase In-App Messaging | That is the documented contextual-message use case, not agent chat |
| Complete control over data and workflow | Custom support stack | You can choose every component, but you must build the support operation |
