How to Add Emojis to SEO Titles in WordPress

Use your SEO plugin’s title field to add an emoji in WordPress. Here are the Yoast and Rank Math steps—and what to expect in Google Search.

Add the emoji in your SEO plugin’s title field—not just in the post’s visible heading. In Yoast SEO Premium, use the emoji picker in the post’s Search appearance panel; in Rank Math, enter an emoji in the snippet editor’s Title field. Google may rewrite the title link or leave the emoji out, so make sure the title still makes sense without it.

Where to add the emoji

A WordPress post can have a visible heading and a separate SEO title managed by a plugin. To add an emoji to the title intended for search results, edit the SEO title field in the plugin you already use. Changing only the post heading does not necessarily change that field.

Plugin Where to edit How to insert the emoji Bulk editing
Yoast SEO Post or page editor → Yoast SEO → Search appearance Use the smiley-face emoji picker, or type : to open emoji options. The documented picker is a Yoast SEO Premium feature. Not stated in the cited Yoast picker documentation.
Rank Math Post or page editor → Rank Math SEO → Edit Snippet → Title Enter a supported emoji in the Title field. Rank Math documents bulk editing through Rank Math SEO → Titles & Meta, then the SEO title fields in the Posts or Pages list.

Add an emoji with Yoast SEO Premium

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open the post or page you want to update.
  2. Open the Yoast SEO sidebar or metabox, then select Search appearance.
  3. In the SEO title field, click the smiley-face button and choose an emoji. Yoast also documents typing : to open emoji options. The picker described in Yoast’s emoji title instructions is a Premium feature.
  4. Review the snippet preview and update the post or page. Check that the wording still reads naturally if the emoji is removed.

Do not assume the picker is available in every Yoast version or plan. Yoast’s snippet editor guide explains how to review the preview.

Add an emoji with Rank Math

  1. Edit the relevant post or page in WordPress.
  2. Open Rank Math SEO and choose Edit Snippet.
  3. Enter the emoji in the Title field, then save or update the page.

For a bulk edit, Rank Math’s bulk-editing instructions describe enabling the feature under Rank Math SEO → Titles & Meta and editing SEO title fields from the Posts or Pages list. Plugin labels can change between versions, so use the closest current equivalent if your screen differs.

Will Google show the emoji?

There is no guarantee. Google Search Central says title links are generated automatically using multiple sources, including the page’s content and references to it elsewhere on the web. Google may therefore show a different title from the one entered in WordPress, and an emoji may be omitted. Its title-link guidance also recommends descriptive, concise titles and notes that displayed titles can be truncated to fit a device’s width.

That means the plugin preview is useful for checking your proposed title, but it cannot promise how a search result will look. Keep the essential meaning in words rather than relying on the emoji to communicate it.

How to use an emoji without weakening the title

  • Choose an emoji that fits the page and your audience; skip it if it feels unrelated or distracting.
  • Keep the title descriptive and concise, with the subject clear even if the emoji disappears.
  • Use it sparingly. Yoast’s advice to use emojis selectively is vendor guidance, not a Google rule. Rendering can also vary by device and font, and Google may not display the character.
  • After saving, check the plugin’s snippet preview. Treat it as an editing aid, not a guarantee of Google’s final result.

If you are choosing between Yoast and Rank Math just for this task, you do not need to switch plugins solely to insert an emoji. Use the title field in the plugin already managing your SEO titles.
