To show a GIF when someone tips or donates, set up an alert with a third-party provider, then add that provider’s alert overlay to your streaming scene. In OBS Studio, the overlay is usually a Browser Source. OBS displays the alert; it does not process donations.
What you need
- A streaming account and software such as OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop.
- An alert provider connected to the relevant platform account. This guide uses Streamlabs’ documented Alert Box workflow; available events depend on the provider’s current platform integration.
- A GIF file you can upload, or an image/video from the provider’s library.
A GIF is only the visual asset. It will not appear in your stream until it is attached to an event in an alert provider and that alert is added to the scene.

Set up a donation or tip GIF in Streamlabs

Connect your platform account
Sign in to Streamlabs and connect the relevant streaming platform account or accounts. Provider integrations and event availability can vary, so confirm that the event you want is supported for your account.

Open Alert Box and select the event
In the Streamlabs dashboard, open Streaming essentials, then Alert Box. Choose the platform and event. Select Tips for provider-handled tips or donations where that event is available. Native platform events, such as YouTube Super Chats, are separate event types; do not assume a tip alert also covers them.

Choose and customize the GIF
Select an image or video from the available library, or upload your own GIF. Streamlabs lists GIF among supported image formats, alongside PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, WebM, and MP4. File support is provider-specific, so do not assume another service accepts the same formats.
Adjust the image size and position, message template, alert duration, text delay, sound, font, and animations to suit your layout. Save the settings.

Optionally make an amount-based version
In the Tips alert settings, add a variation and set a condition such as Donation amount is at least a chosen value. Customize its image and alert, then save it. Conditions differ by platform and event, so check the options displayed for the event you selected.

- Streamlabs Desktop: Add Alert Box from Sources.
- OBS with the Streamlabs OBS plugin: Add the Alert Box widget.
- OBS Studio without the plugin, or other software that supports browser overlays: Copy the provider’s Widget URL, add a Browser Source, and paste the URL into its URL field. Use the provider’s instructions for any additional sizing or browser-source settings.
OBS does not generate donation alerts itself. The OBS Project explains that third-party alert overlays are embedded in the stream using a Browser Source: OBS Project: How do I add alerts to my stream?
Preview and test before going live
- Open the provider’s Live Preview or test controls.
- Trigger a test for the normal event and, if you made one, test the amount-based variation separately.
- Switch to the scene where the alert will appear and verify that the GIF, text, sound, position, and timing look right in your layout.
A dashboard preview does not guarantee the overlay will look correct in your own scene, so check playback in the streaming software before going live. Streamlabs documents preview and test controls, but your final check should be in your actual setup. Donation alerts are not donation processing
The alert provider may receive a tip and show its alert, but OBS itself does not collect donations. The OBS Project says the project does not directly provide facilities to receive donations in OBS Studio; creators can use third-party providers, and some platforms offer fundraising options: OBS Project: How do I receive donations for my stream?

“Donation” is not one universal event. Tips, Twitch Bits, YouTube Super Chats, memberships, and fundraiser donations can be separate event types with different platform and provider rules. Select the specific event you want and verify its availability for your account and region.

Common problems and fixes
- The GIF does not appear: Confirm that the correct event is enabled, the alert settings were saved, and the overlay is present in the scene you are using. In OBS, check that the Browser Source contains the provider’s current Widget URL.
- A test works, but the real event does not: Confirm that the connected account and selected event match the platform activity. A provider’s Tips event may not handle a platform-native event such as a Super Chat.
- The GIF appears in the wrong place or is cut off: Adjust the alert image’s size and position in the provider settings, then test again in the intended scene.
- The custom GIF will not upload or play: Check the provider’s accepted formats and use one it lists. Streamlabs documents GIF support, but other providers may have different requirements.
- An amount-based alert does not trigger: Review the variation condition and ensure you are testing the matching event and amount. Streamlabs explains its variation conditions here: How Do Alert Box Variations Work?
