CaptureKit’s general error-handling guide says rate limits return 401, while its Capture endpoint reference also documents a 429 response. Because the documentation conflicts, check both the status and error body rather than assuming throttling always means 429. Retry only when the response identifies a rate limit; wait 2–5 seconds, and use bounded exponential backoff for transient server errors and network timeouts.
How to tell a rate limit from another CaptureKit error
CaptureKit’s endpoint reference lists responses for 200, 400, 401, 402, 429 and 500. Its general error-handling guide, however, explicitly says rate limits return 401, not 429. The reviewed documentation does not explain whether 429 is used in some contexts or is an outdated or generated schema. Inspect the actual status and response body, especially the error string, before deciding whether a request is safe to repeat. Capture endpoint reference; Error handling guide.

| Status or failure | What to do | Retry? |
|---|---|---|
401 |
Read the error body. It may indicate a subscription rate limit or a daily, total, weekly or monthly API-key quota; it can also mean the key is invalid, inactive or expired. | Only if the error identifies rate limiting: wait 2–5 seconds. Fix credentials for authentication errors. |
429 |
Check the response body and handle it as a limit only if its details indicate throttling. | Follow the documented 2–5 second delay when it is a rate-limit response. |
402 |
Resolve the credit or payment issue. CaptureKit says the request is not executed and not billed when payment is required; unpaid invoices can block API traffic. | No. Add credits, enable Auto Top-Up or settle the invoice before trying again. |
500 |
Treat as a potentially transient server failure. | Yes, with bounded exponential backoff; CaptureKit’s guidance uses no more than three retry attempts. |
| Network timeout | Check client timeout settings and whether the request may exceed the real-time limit. | Potentially; use bounded exponential backoff. For work that may exceed the 60-second server-side timeout, use async mode. |
400, 403 or 404 |
Correct invalid parameters, check permissions or handle an absent resource as appropriate. | Not as a generic retry. Fix the cause first. |
These distinctions follow CaptureKit’s error-handling guide, best-practices guide and long-running requests guidance.
What limits apply, and do extra API keys help?
CaptureKit describes subscription rate limits separately from API-key quotas. The error text may identify whether a subscription limit or a key quota was reached; key quota periods can be daily, total, weekly or monthly. The pages reviewed do not publish a specific requests-per-second, concurrency or burst threshold, so do not build a client around an assumed number. Capture endpoint authentication uses the x-api-key header, and the endpoint reference says a successful capture call costs one credit. Capture endpoint reference; Error handling guide.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Adding keys does not create separate capacity: quotas and rate limits are shared workspace-wide across API keys. The plans page lists the following published monthly tiers; prices and allowances can change, so confirm them in the live billing page before choosing a plan.
| Plan | Published price | Published credits |
|---|---|---|
| Free trial | $0/month | 100/month |
| Starter | $7/month | 1,000/month |
| Pro | $29/month | 10,000/month |
| Ultimate | $89/month | 50,000/month |
CaptureKit says to consider a higher plan when limits recur regularly, or contact support about higher volume. Because workspace capacity is shared, coordinating request volume across services using different keys is more useful than issuing additional keys.

Implement status-aware retries
Send x-api-key from a backend or trusted automation environment, not browser-side code where the key can be exposed. Check the HTTP status before treating the response as a successful capture. For a 401, parse the error body and retry only when it explicitly identifies a rate limit; wait 2–5 seconds. In production, add random jitter and a retry cap to reduce synchronized retry bursts. The delay is CaptureKit’s recommendation; jitter is general client-side resilience practice.
For transient 500 responses and network errors, CaptureKit’s example starts at 500 ms and doubles the wait on each attempt, with a configurable maximum of three retries. That means up to four total attempts when the initial request is included; it is example guidance, not a guaranteed service-level contract. Never apply that retry loop indiscriminately to 402, invalid credentials or malformed requests.

JavaScript example for the retry decision
The following Node.js pattern shows the response handling and bounded backoff. Adapt the request body and endpoint to the CaptureKit operation you use; keep the API key in a server-side environment variable.
const sleep = (ms) => new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, ms));
async function captureWithRetries(makeRequest, maxRetries = 3) {
for (let attempt = 0; ; attempt++) {
let response;
try {
response = await makeRequest();
} catch (error) {
if (attempt >= maxRetries) throw error;
await sleep(500 * 2 ** attempt);
continue;
}
if (response.ok) return response;
const body = await response.json().catch(() => ({}));
const message = String(body.error ?? body.message ?? '');
const isRateLimit =
(response.status === 401 || response.status === 429) &&
/rate.?limit|quota/i.test(message);
if (isRateLimit) {
if (attempt >= maxRetries) {
throw new Error(`CaptureKit rate limit after retries: ${message}`);
}
await sleep(2000 + Math.random() * 3000);
continue;
}
if (response.status === 500) {
if (attempt >= maxRetries) {
throw new Error(`CaptureKit server error: ${message}`);
}
await sleep(500 * 2 ** attempt);
continue;
}
if (response.status === 402) {
throw new Error(`Payment or credit issue; resolve billing before retrying: ${message}`);
}
throw new Error(`CaptureKit HTTP ${response.status}: ${message}`);
}
}
const apiKey = process.env.CAPTUREKIT_API_KEY;
if (!apiKey) throw new Error('Set CAPTUREKIT_API_KEY in the server environment');
const response = await captureWithRetries(() =>
fetch('https://api.capturekit.dev/v1/capture', {
method: 'POST',
headers: {
'content-type': 'application/json',
'x-api-key': apiKey
},
body: JSON.stringify({ url: 'https://example.com' })
})
);
// Consume or save the successful response according to the endpoint's output format.
The CaptureKit documentation cited here specifies the x-api-key authentication header, but does not establish a canonical request URL or payload in the retry guidance. Confirm those details against the endpoint reference for the capture mode you are using. Also align your HTTP client timeout with the server’s 60-second real-time limit; a client timeout can occur earlier, and a timeout does not prove that the server did not finish processing.

Batching, timeouts and cost control
For batches, spread requests over time and monitor usage. CaptureKit’s best-practices guide illustrates a 100 ms delay, but says to adjust it to the plan; it does not guarantee that this interval stays below every plan’s limit. Avoid launching a large synchronized batch and then retrying all failures together. A queue with controlled concurrency, status-aware retries and jitter helps prevent retry bursts from compounding throttling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor real-time calls, CaptureKit documents a 60-second hard server-side timeout. If a job may take longer, use async mode rather than repeatedly increasing client wait times. Successful capture calls consume one credit; the getting-started page states that “Credits are deducted only when the call succeeds.” Long-running requests; Getting started.

Troubleshooting recurring failures
- 401 without an obvious quota message: inspect the response body and verify that the key is valid, active and current. Do not assume all
401responses are rate limits. - Repeated rate-limit errors after waiting: check whether the message names a subscription limit or a key quota and its period. Reduce or spread request volume; if it happens regularly, evaluate a higher plan or ask support about volume.
- 429 response: although the endpoint schema lists
429, the general guide says rate limits return401. Parse the body and handle the observed error rather than relying on one status code. - 402 response: stop retries and correct credits, Auto Top-Up or invoice status first.
- 500 or network timeout: apply the bounded backoff policy, then surface the failure when attempts are exhausted. If requests may exceed the documented real-time timeout, switch to async mode.
- Limits despite using multiple keys: keys share workspace-wide quotas and rate limits. Reduce aggregate demand or discuss additional capacity with CaptureKit.
Or skip the browser setup
If the task is getting a clean website screenshot rather than integrating CaptureKit specifically, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; its clean-shot process accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.
For example, save a screenshot with cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should a client retry every HTTP 401 from CaptureKit?
No. Retry only when the response body identifies rate limiting; invalid, inactive or expired credentials need to be corrected.
Does a timed-out request always mean no credit was used?
The reviewed documentation does not establish that. A client timeout can happen before the server’s 60-second hard timeout, so treat the outcome as uncertain and avoid uncontrolled duplicate submissions.
How many credits does a successful CaptureKit capture use?
The Capture endpoint reference says one credit per successful capture call.
