The easiest way to add checkout fields depends on whether your store uses the Checkout block or the older shortcode checkout. First identify which one is on your checkout page; then use the block’s built-in controls, a compatible field-editor extension, or a developer customization. An extension that works with one checkout type may not work with the other.
Identify your checkout type first
WooCommerce’s Checkout block is the default on new installs. The block is edited in the site editor, while the legacy checkout uses a shortcode and has separate checkout customizer settings. WooCommerce documents the distinction in its Checkout documentation.

Open your checkout page in the editor. If it contains a Checkout block, follow the block guidance below. If it contains the legacy checkout shortcode, use an extension or code intended for that checkout. If you are unsure, check the page content and the relevant WooCommerce settings before installing a field editor.

For the Checkout block: use native controls or a block-compatible extension
Adjust supported built-in fields
The block’s settings can control the visibility of Company, Address Line 2, and Phone, and whether address and phone fields are required. These settings are for the built-in fields; they do not provide a general-purpose editor for adding any custom question. WooCommerce says block fields can vary with the customer’s order and store settings. It also says to designate the checkout page in WooCommerce’s advanced settings for the block to function properly.
Add other information with a compatible extension
For a new field—such as a delivery instruction, text engraving, or a business identifier—choose an extension whose current documentation explicitly supports Cart and Checkout Blocks. Do not rely on a plugin’s name alone: WooCommerce Marketplace documentation includes a Checkout Field Editor that works with legacy checkout only, as well as a different product that describes block compatibility.

The Conditional Checkout Fields documentation lists 26 field types, including text, textarea, number, telephone, email, select, checkbox, radio, date/time, file upload, URL, and VAT number. It says WooCommerce core supports four additional checkout field types on Cart and Checkout Blocks—text, select, checkbox, and date—and that conditional visibility is available from WooCommerce 9.9.0, using JSON Schema rules in PHP. These are product- and version-specific details; confirm the current documentation and requirements before installing or relying on them.
For legacy shortcode checkout: use a field editor or code
Use an editor for no-code changes
A checkout field editor can be the simplest option if your store uses the shortcode checkout and you want to add or manage fields without writing code. Before choosing one, confirm its documentation explicitly supports legacy checkout and covers the field types and behavior you need. For example, the WooCommerce Marketplace’s Checkout Field Editor documentation says that extension works with legacy checkout only.

Do not assume all products called “Checkout Field Editor” have the same compatibility. Some documented extensions support both classic checkout and Cart and Checkout Blocks; others do not. Check the page for the exact extension you intend to use.
Use code only when it suits your setup
A developer can add custom behavior when an editor does not meet the requirement. The code must target the checkout actually in use. WooCommerce warns that extensions relying on hooks to add checkout markup, including custom fields, usually need integration work for Cart and Checkout Blocks. Its documentation also describes block extensibility interfaces as actively developing, so confirm the supported approach for your store’s WooCommerce version and extensions before implementing it.

Plan the field before adding it
A field should collect information you will use to fulfill or manage the order. Decide these details before configuring it:

- Purpose: What decision or task does the answer support?
- Placement: Which checkout section makes the question easiest to understand?
- Data type and label: Choose a suitable control and a clear prompt. Use a select list or checkbox when answers are constrained; use free text only when customers need to provide their own response.
- Required status and validation: Make a field required only when the order cannot be processed without it. Decide what counts as a valid answer.
- Order handling: Confirm where staff will see the submitted value and how they will use it. One documented field-editor extension says added field data appears in WooCommerce order details; verify that behavior for your chosen plugin and store setup.
For a field that applies only to certain orders, check whether the extension supports conditional display and which checkout types support that feature. Do not make customers answer questions that are irrelevant to their purchase.

Test the complete checkout after changing it
Field display and compatibility depend on the checkout implementation and the extensions installed, so test the actual store rather than relying only on an editor preview. Place a test order and check:
- The field appears in the intended checkout location and remains usable on a phone.
- Required and optional behavior works as intended, including an empty required field.
- Valid and invalid input is handled correctly.
- The order completes successfully and the submitted value is saved where staff can find it.
- Shipping, payment, and other checkout extensions continue to work with the field present.
If a field is missing or order placement fails, first check whether the extension supports the checkout type on the page. Then review its settings and compatibility with other checkout extensions before changing code or switching checkout implementations.
Special case: add-ons such as gift messages
Some needs are more than a basic data field. WooCommerce’s Checkout Add-Ons documentation describes collecting information and offering options such as tips, gift wrapping, rush handling, and gift messages. That documentation says the extension had not yet been updated for Cart and Checkout Blocks; because extension support can change, check the current page before using it with a block checkout: WooCommerce Checkout Add-Ons documentation.
