Set the transition duration in the Scene Transitions dock; OBS does not prescribe one ideal length, so choose a pace that suits the footage and check the result in your stream or recording.
Set up one scene for each video

In the Scenes dock, create a scene for each clip. Give each scene a clear name so you can identify the incoming shot while switching.

Select a scene, then add a Media Source and choose its local video file. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. If you want that individual clip to repeat, enable the source’s Loop option. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Repeat for the other clips. Match the framing and layout across scenes where possible. OBS source order controls which elements appear on top, so keep titles or other foreground overlays above the video source; see the OBS Sources guide.

Choose and set the Fade transition

In the Scene Transitions dock, select Fade. OBS includes Fade as a built-in transition, alongside Cut and other available transition types. The OBS Studio Overview Guide explains the transition controls.

Adjust the transition’s duration in that dock. A longer duration creates a slower dissolve; a shorter one changes scenes more quickly. There is no universally correct setting, so preview the switch with your particular clips.

Switch from one clip’s scene to another to trigger the dissolve. Check the composition and audio during the change, and make a test recording or stream output before publishing. A visual scene fade does not establish how the audio will mix in every setup.

Choose between separate scenes and a playlist

Use a Media Source for local single-file playback, or VLC Video when playlist convenience matters more than documented per-item dissolves. The Media Sources guide covers both source types; it does not establish that VLC playlists crossfade between entries.
Automate scene changes or design a custom blend
Automatic switching with Advanced Scene Switcher
If you want OBS to move through separate clip scenes without manual switching, Advanced Scene Switcher is a third-party plugin for macro-based automation. Its OBS forum listing describes support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. At the time reflected by that listing, it showed version 1.36.1, last updated August 7, 2026, and OBS Studio 31.1.1 as the minimum version. Plugin details can change; check the current listing and compatibility before installing. Pair automated scene changes with the built-in Fade transition.
Mask-based transitions with Track Matte Stinger
For an intentionally designed blend rather than a simple dissolve, OBS’s Track Matte Stinger uses a mask: black reveals the current scene, white reveals the next, and gray produces partial blending. A stinger overlay and its matte can be arranged side by side or stacked in one file. OBS disables separate files for track-matte stingers because their decoding cannot be guaranteed to stay synchronized, and recommends the single-file approach. Troubleshoot a rough or missing crossfade

The change is a cut, not a dissolve: confirm that Fade is selected in the Scene Transitions dock, rather than Cut, and that you are switching between scenes.

The Fade is too abrupt or too slow: adjust its duration in the Scene Transitions dock and preview again. The appropriate pacing depends on the footage.

A playlist advances without a visual dissolve: VLC Video provides playlist playback, looping, and shuffle; the reviewed OBS documentation does not promise per-entry crossfades. Put clips in separate scenes and use Fade for documented clip-to-clip dissolves.

VLC Video is unavailable: install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

An overlay disappears behind the clip: reorder sources so the overlay is above the video source.

The picture transition looks right but audio does not: inspect the actual recording or stream output. A scene’s visual transition alone does not determine the right audio mix for every setup.
