How you add an image depends on your active theme: classic themes with widget areas use Appearance > Widgets, while block themes use the Site Editor. In a classic theme, add an Image block to the sidebar and choose an image from your device, Media Library, or a URL.
First, identify your theme’s editing interface
In the WordPress dashboard, look for Appearance > Widgets. If it is available, open it and select the sidebar or other widget area where the image should appear. The active theme defines which areas exist and where they display, so the area might have a different name or the theme may not provide the sidebar you expect. WordPress’s Block-based Widgets Editor documentation explains the distinction: block themes use the Site Editor instead of the traditional Widgets screen.

If the Widgets menu is absent, open the Site Editor and edit the template, template part, or pattern that controls the relevant layout area. The exact location and labels depend on the theme.

Add an image in the block-based Widgets Editor
- Open the widget area. Go to Appearance > Widgets and select the sidebar or other intended area.
- Add an Image block. Add it as you would add a block in the post editor. If the area contains older or third-party widgets that have not been converted to blocks, WordPress may manage them through a Legacy Widget block.
- Choose the image source. Upload an image from your device, select one from the Media Library, or insert an image URL. WordPress’s Image block documentation describes these options.
- Set alternative text. Describe the image’s purpose when it conveys information. If it is purely decorative, use the appropriate decorative-image option rather than adding redundant text.
- Save or update, then preview the site. Save using the control shown in your editor and check the front end to confirm the image appears in the intended area. The control and placement can vary by editor version and theme.
Choose a reliable image source

Uploading a copy or choosing one from the Media Library avoids ongoing dependence on another site keeping a particular file available, provided you have the right to use that image.

If your site uses the classic widget interface
Some sites use the original classic widgets screen, either because of their setup or because the Classic Widgets plugin restores that interface. WordPress documents the classic Text widget as supporting text, images, and HTML. Open the target sidebar, add a Text widget, and insert the image using the controls available in that installation or permitted markup. Exact controls vary, so preview the result after saving.

When the sidebar or image does not appear
- No Widgets screen: If you use a block theme, edit the relevant layout through the Site Editor instead.
- No expected sidebar: Check the available widget-area names; areas are theme-defined and may differ from one theme to another.
- Image block missing from the area: Older or third-party widgets may appear as Legacy Widget blocks in the block-based editor.
- Image from a URL has disappeared: The original may have been moved, deleted, or made unavailable. If you have permission, upload a copy to the Media Library and replace the URL-based image.
- Image is present but not useful to assistive technology: Review its alternative text and make it descriptive or decorative as appropriate.
