To show a short notice across selected pages, use an announcement-bar plugin or have a developer add a custom bar. A sticky post belongs in the posts feed; it does not automatically create a sitewide banner.
Choose the display that fits your announcement
| What you need | Best starting point | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| A dated update that belongs among your articles | A regular post, optionally marked sticky | It appears in the blog feed, not necessarily on every page. WordPress.org documentation describes sticky posts as a feature for the built-in post type post, not custom post types. |
| A short notice or call to action visible beyond the feed | An announcement-bar plugin | You add a plugin dependency, and its features and compatibility depend on the plugin. Check its current listing and test it on your site. |
| A custom design or specific display rules | Theme or plugin code | It requires developer work and ongoing maintenance. WordPress Developer Blog demonstrates one implementation using the wp_body_open hook. |
| A browsable series of announcements | A dedicated page, category, or custom post type with an archive | You need a suitable archive or display design; core sticky posts do not apply to custom post types. WordPress.org documentation explains the built-in post-type limitation. |
Pin an announcement post to the top of the blog
- In the dashboard, go to Posts → All Posts and edit the announcement, or choose Posts → Add New to create it.
- In the post settings sidebar, open the document or post settings and find the visibility or status controls.
- Enable Stick to the Front Page, or the equivalent sticky option in your editor, then publish or update the post.
- Visit the front page that displays your posts and check that the announcement appears above newer posts. Theme templates can affect how sticky posts look, so verify the result on your actual site.
- When the announcement is no longer current, edit the post and turn off its sticky status. WordPress.com’s guide to sticking a post also describes removing the status when the post should no longer stay above the feed.
Use sticky status sparingly. If many unrelated posts are pinned, readers may find it harder to tell which update matters most, and themes may present sticky items differently. The core feature keeps a post at the top of the front page of posts; it is not a guarantee that the post appears across every page.
Show a short notice across pages with a plugin
An announcement bar is a better fit when a brief message—such as a maintenance notice or feature update—should accompany pages rather than function as a full article. The WordPress.org listing for Announcement Notification Bar describes top or bottom placement, fixed or scrolling display, targeting the homepage, blog, or selected posts and pages, a call to action, and a dismissal control. These are plugin-listing claims, not guarantees about WordPress core.
The listing for Announcer describes installing and activating the plugin, opening its announcement-management screen, creating and configuring an announcement, and publishing it. It also describes floating bars and multiple announcements. Before choosing either plugin, review its current release information, compatibility, support activity, and settings in the directory; plugin features can change.

After setup, check the message on the pages and devices where readers will see it. Confirm that its placement does not obscure navigation or page content, that any call to action works, and that dismissal behaves as expected.

For a site with developer support, the WordPress Developer Blog’s March 2024 example uses the wp_body_open hook to render a front-end bar. The example retrieves a saved message and passes it through esc_html() before output, which helps prevent message content from being interpreted as markup.

Treat that example as a starting point, not code to paste blindly into a live theme. The implementation needs to fit your theme and define when the bar appears, how it is styled, and how it works for people using assistive technology. A developer should also account for how the message is maintained and removed.

Quick Recap
Keep the announcement current
- Give the message a clear purpose and, when relevant, a date or end point.
- Use a sticky post when readers should find a fuller update in the blog feed; use a bar when the short notice should appear on other pages.
- Review the live display after changing the theme, editor, plugin, or announcement settings.
- Remove sticky status or unpublish the bar when the information is no longer useful.
