To add an administrator to a V Rising dedicated server, put the player’s 17-digit SteamID64 in adminlist.txt, enable the console in the V Rising client, then join the server and run adminauth. The file entry alone does not grant privileges; authentication in the in-game console is the step that activates them.
Godlike.Host offers hosted V Rising servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The exact location of adminlist.txt depends on the server host and its persistent-data setting. Use the paths below as a guide, then confirm the active path in your host’s file manager or launch parameters.

This procedure is for a V Rising dedicated server. You need access to the server’s files or control panel, the ability to edit its settings, and access to the Steam account that should receive administrator rights.
- The server must be stopped while you make file changes if your host locks files during operation.
- You need the player’s SteamID64, not a character name, display name, Steam username or legacy
STEAM_0:1:...identifier. - The player must be able to join the server after the file is saved, because
adminauthis run from the game client. - Keep a backup of the existing
adminlist.txtbefore changing it, especially on a server with several administrators.
Step 1: Find the player’s SteamID64
SteamID64 is the decimal Steam identifier used by V Rising’s administrator list. It is normally a 17-digit number.

Copy it from a Steam profile URL
If the player’s Steam profile uses the numeric format, open the profile and copy the digits after /profiles/. Those digits are the SteamID64. Do not copy a custom profile name from a URL using /id/; that is a vanity address rather than the numeric identifier needed by the server.
Convert a custom profile URL when necessary
For a profile with a custom URL, use a SteamID lookup service such as steamid.io. Enter the profile URL and copy the decimal SteamID64 result. Check that the result is a single 17-digit decimal value before putting it in the server file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfirm the account
Compare the returned profile with the person who should receive access. Giving administrator rights to the wrong Steam account can expose every administrative function on the server, and a display-name match is not a reliable identity check because names can change.
Step 2: Locate and edit adminlist.txt
The file is named exactly adminlist.txt. Its folder is determined by the server’s persistent-data path, the host’s packaging, and sometimes a launch parameter. There is no single path that applies to every installation.
| Server setup | Reported location | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Official 1.0.x-style installation | The Settings folder inside the server’s persistent data path |
Open the persistent-data directory used by the dedicated server and edit the settings file there. |
Server started with a -persistentDataPath override |
save-dataSettingsadminlist.txt |
Follow the custom path supplied in the launch command rather than assuming the default installation folder. |
| Windows installation using the standard local data location | AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettings |
Look under the Windows account that runs the server. The exact drive and user profile depend on that account. |
| Some host-managed installations | VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/ |
Use the host’s file manager to identify whether this packaged path is the active settings directory. |
Hosting panels may expose only the persistent-data directory, while a self-hosted server may reveal the active location in its shortcut, service definition or startup script. If more than one adminlist.txt exists, the active one is the copy under the persistent-data path that the running server was launched with. Editing a template or an unused installation copy has no effect.
Create the file if it is missing
If the active Settings folder has no adminlist.txt, create a plain-text file with that exact name. Make sure the editor has not silently added an extra extension such as .txt.txt. On systems that hide extensions, enable extension display or verify the complete filename in the host’s file manager.

Use one SteamID64 per line
Put each administrator’s SteamID64 on its own line. The file should contain only the decimal IDs:
first-administrator-steamid64
second-administrator-steamid64
The example above shows the format, not values to copy. In the real file, replace each line with the actual 17-digit number for one account.
- Do not add player names.
- Do not surround IDs with quotation marks.
- Do not add commas, brackets or comments.
- Do not put two IDs on one line.
- Remove leading and trailing spaces; an invisible space or other extra character can prevent recognition.
Save the file as ordinary text using the server’s existing encoding. Avoid rich-text editors that add formatting or metadata.
Step 3: Enable the client console
Console access is a setting in each player’s V Rising game client. It is separate from editing the server file.
- Launch V Rising.
- Open Options.
- Choose General.
- Turn on Console Enabled.
- Apply the setting and return to the game.
The player who is being promoted must enable the console on the client they will use to connect. Enabling it does not grant rights by itself; it only makes the command interface available.
Step 4: Authenticate as an administrator
After the ID has been saved to the active file, connect to the server with the matching Steam account.
- Join the V Rising server.
- Press the tilde key (
~) to open the in-game console. Keyboard layouts can place this key differently, but it is the key normally used for the console. - Enter
adminauthand submit the command. - Wait for the console response before attempting another command.
adminauth checks the Steam account currently connected against adminlist.txt. If the SteamID64 is not present in the active file, authentication fails even when the file was edited correctly elsewhere on the machine. If the command succeeds, the account has administrative access for that session.
Should you restart the server?
Documentation and hosting instructions do not agree on whether a restart is required after changing the administrator file. Stunlock Studios’ reported 1.0.x instructions allow changes without a restart, while some hosting guides recommend restarting so the server definitely reloads its settings.
Restarting is the safer operational choice, particularly when you have changed the file while the server was running, moved the persistent-data path, or are unsure which copy was read. Stop the server cleanly, save the file, start it again, reconnect, and run adminauth. If your host documents live reloading and you choose not to restart, still reconnect before testing so the client receives a fresh session.
Verify access and use administrator commands
Once authenticated, enter list in the console to display the administrator commands available to your account. The command list can include functions such as:
- Kick, for removing a connected player.
- BanCharacter, for banning a character.
- BanUser, for banning a user.
- SetAdminLevel, for assigning an administrative tier to a user without editing
adminlist.txt.
Command availability and required arguments can vary with the game build and the account’s current tier. Use the output of list as the authoritative list for the running server rather than relying on a command name from an older guide.
File-based access versus an admin tier
adminlist.txt is the initial allow-list. After you authenticate, SetAdminLevel can adjust a user’s tier from the console without adding another line to the file. Treat that as a separate permission change: a player can be present in the allow-list yet receive a different tier through the command system.

Troubleshooting failed authentication
adminauth says the player is not an administrator
- Confirm that the player is using the same Steam account whose SteamID64 appears in the file.
- Check that the ID is the 17-digit decimal SteamID64, not a
STEAM_0:1:...value or a profile display name. - Inspect the line for leading spaces, trailing spaces, copied punctuation or hidden characters.
- Make sure the filename is exactly
adminlist.txt, not a second extension. - Verify that you edited the active
Settingsdirectory, especially if the server uses-persistentDataPath. - Restart the server, reconnect, and run
adminauthagain.
The file appears correct but nothing changes
Search the installation for duplicate settings folders and compare them with the server’s startup parameters. A common cause is editing the installation directory while the running service reads a separate persistent-data directory. On a managed host, use its file manager rather than a local copy of the server files.
The console will not open
Return to Options > General and confirm that Console Enabled is on. Then reconnect to the server and press the tilde key. If the keyboard layout maps that key differently, use the key that produces the tilde/backtick position on your layout.
One administrator works but another does not
Compare the two lines character by character. Each account needs its own complete SteamID64 on its own line. Check the second player’s profile rather than copying an ID from the first account, and remove any blank spaces introduced when pasting.
Commands are missing after authentication
Run list again and check the account’s current administrative tier. SetAdminLevel may have assigned a tier with fewer available commands, or the server build may use different command availability than an older guide.

Removing or changing an administrator
To revoke file-based access, stop the server or follow your host’s safe-edit procedure, remove that account’s entire line from the active adminlist.txt, save the file, and restart the server when in doubt. If the account also received a tier through SetAdminLevel, review that permission separately in the console. Keep the file limited to accounts that still need administrative access.
Version differences to check
The commonly cited official instructions cover the legacy 1.0.x branch. A newer guide references the 1.1 build, and paths or command behavior can change between builds and hosting packages. Before applying a version-specific instruction, check the documentation for the V Rising build currently installed on the server and confirm the command output from list.
The durable workflow is unchanged: identify the correct SteamID64, place it in the active adminlist.txt, enable the client console, and authenticate with adminauth. What can vary is the settings path, whether a restart is needed, and the set of commands exposed after authentication.
